Go go Galliano
De Franco-Italiaanse muzikant Richard Galliano (12 december 1950, Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes) ontdekte op vierjarige leeftijd de accordeon. Na een lange en intense periode aan de academie van Nice, begon hij zich toe te leggen op jazz. Vooral trompettist Clifford Brown inspireerde de veertienjarige Galliano.
Op zijn twaalfde werd hij als een wonderkind aanzien. Zonder twijfel is Richard Galliano de beroemdste accordeonist van zijn generatie. Vanaf 1980 deelde Galliano het podium met jazzsterren zoals Chet Baker, Joe Zawinul,
Michel Petrucciani en
Toots Thielemans. Met zijn eigen groep brengt hij al jaren verrassende projecten uit.
Galliano deed voor de Franse ‘musette’ wat Piazzolla voor de Argentijnse tango had gedaan: hij rekte het genre op en bracht er meer diepgang in. In 1983 ontmoette hij
Astor Piazzolla, zijn grote voorbeeld.
Sinds hij in 1991 de zogenaamde 'New Musette' stijl ontwikkelde, is de accordeonist een lichtend voorbeeld voor een hele generatie nieuwe spelers.

The Foster plan
Het hitje 'Pumped up kicks' van Foster the People doet me iedere keer weer denken aan 'Young Folks' dat andere niemendalletje, van Peter Bjorn and John. (Dat fluitje waarschijnlijk, he?)
De Amerikaanse indiepop/indierockband Foster the People werd in 2009 opgericht in Los Angeles.
Mark Foster heeft zeven jaar als solo-artiest gewerkt en af en toe liedjes gemaakt voor verschillende reclames. Na die zeven jaar richtte hij een band op omdat hij in zijn liedjes veel meer instrumenten begon te gebruiken en hij andere muzikanten nodig had om die te bespelen. Foster (zang, keyboard, gitaar, percussie) vormde in oktober 2009 een team met Mark Pontius (drums, percussie) en Jacob 'Cubbie' Fink (basgitaar, achtergrondzang).
Zach "Reazon" Heiligman zat eerder ook bij de band, maar heeft nu alleen nog een rol achter de schermen. Ze hebben samen aan een hip-hop project gewerkt vlak voor en tijdens het ontstaan van de band. Ter aanvulling touren er nog twee andere muzikanten mee: Sean Cimono (gitaar, keyboard en achtergrondzang) en Isom Innis ( keyboard en piano). Cimono staat vermeld op het album met het nummer 'Waste'. Overigens heette de band oorspronkelijk Foster
and the People...
Met een combinatie van aanstekelijke melodieën en eighties-achtige synthesizers pikken ze muzikaal de draad op waar MGMT die liet liggen. 'Torches' is zondermeer een vrolijk zomerplaatje, maar volgende zomer is er vast weer een nieuwe hype...

Solid as Ashford & Simpson
Nickolas Ashford (4 mei 1942, Fairfield, South Carolina) en Valerie Simpson (26 augustus 1946 The Bronx, New York) zijn als koppel liedjesschrijvers/producenten en zangers. Ze hebben elkaar ontmoet in 1964 in het koor van de Harlem's White Rock Baptistenkerk. In 1966 scoorden ze hun eerste zelfgeschreven hit, Let's Go Get Stoned (voor Ray Charles).
In 1966 tekenden ze een contract bij Motown en schreven ze de hits Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing en You're All I Need to Get By voor het toenmalige duo Marvin Gaye en Tammi Terrell. Voor Diana Ross schreef het duo de wereldhit Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand. Ook hebben ze toen California Soul voor The Fifth Dimension en Cry Like a Baby voor Aretha Franklin geschreven. Tevens hebben ze liedjes voor Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Teddy Pendergrass, The Brothers Johnson, Chaka Khan en Rufusgeschreven.
Ashford begon als solozanger bij verschillende muzieklabels en nam liedjes op zoals It Ain't Like That, (wat later opgenomen zou worden door Martha Reeves & The Vandellas)... Simpson maakte in 1971 een soloalbum, waar het liedje Silly Wasn't I op staat dat later door 50 Cent gesampled is. Ashford & Simpson werden een zangduo in 1964 met de naam Valerie & Nick en ze namen de single I'll Find you op, de single werd geen hit. Ze verlieten in 1973 Motown en tekenden een contract bij Warner Bros.. Rond deze tijd trouwde het koppel en sindsdien zijn ze ook het zangduo Ashford & Simpson.
In 1996 openden Ashford & Simpson een restaurant in New York waar ook live gezongen kon worden, dit gebeurde door onder anderen Queen Latifah. Tevens hadden ze rond deze periode een eigen radioprogramma op New Yorks KISS-FM radio station. In 2008 kwam er een remix-cd van het duo uit en ze treden heden ten dage nog op in kleine, intieme zaaltjes in de V.S.

What the World Needs Now Is Burt Bacharach
De Amerikaanse pianist en componist Burt Bacharach (Kansas City (Missouri), 12 mei 1928) studeerde muziek aan McGill-universiteit en Mannes School of Music. In de jaren '50 en vroege jaren '60 was hij pianist en bandleider voor Marlene Dietrich.
Met de tekstdichter Hal David en anderen was hij verantwoordelijk voor talrijke bekend geworden nummers die onder meer gezongen werden door The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, Jack Jones, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Luther Vandross, Scott Walker en Dionne Warwick. Zijn muziek wordt veelal geclassificeerd als 'easy listening' en gewaardeerd voor de opvallende melodielijnen en licht klassiek georiënteerde stijl.
Burt Bacharach had 52 Top 40-hits. Daarnaast werden veel van de nummers opgepikt door jazzmusici zoals Stan Getz en Wes Montgomery.
Bacharach is viermaal getrouwd: met Paula Stewart, actrice Angie Dickinson, tekstschrijfster Carole Bayer Sager, en momenteel (2005) met Jane Hanson.
Bacharach maakte in 1998 het album Painted From Memory met Elvis Costello. Op At This Time (2005), dat als een protestalbum geldt, staan bijdragen van diezelfde Costello, Rufus Wainwright en Dr. Dre.

Hello Modeselektor!
De Berlijnse band Modeselektor, opgericht in 1996, bestaat uit de dj's Gernot Bronsert en Sebastian Szary. De band staat bekend om hun mix van stijlen; hun muziek bevat onder andere techno, IDM, hip-hop, grime en dubstep.[2]
In 1995 ontmoeten Szary en Bronsert elkaar en beginnen ze samen muziek te maken. In het begin hielden ze de naam
Fundamental Knowledge aan, maar dit werd later veranderd naar Modeselektor. In 1997 volgen twee uitgaven onder Fundamental Knowledge met het platenlabel Mad Benton Records. Het duo blijft draaien en concerten spelen, en dit leidt uiteindelijk tot een remixcontract bij de 'Bolschewistische Kurkapelle Schwarz-Rot'. In 2000 bracht het duo enkele mixtapes uit onder de naam Shahfaustan. Ook vinden ze hun eigen studio in Berlijn.
In 2001 ontmoette het duo Ellen Allien van het platenlabel BPitch Control. Zij maakten in 2002 de uitgave van enkele vinyl-releases mogelijk. In 2005 volgde een compleet album: Hello Mom!. Twee jaar later verscheen het vervolg Happy Birthday!, met gastoptredens van onder andere Thom Yorke en Maxïmo Park. Yorke, die de band 'geniaal' noemde, nodigde Modeselektor in 2008 uit voor enkele optredens als het voorprogramma voor Radiohead. Het duo vergezelde Radiohead tijdens hun show in Berlijn en de hele Japanse toer.
In 2009 ging Modeselektor een hernieuwde samenwerking met Apparat aan. Het project kreeg de naam Moderat, met een gelijknamig album in april als resultaat.

De Amerikaanse pianist George Winston (1949, Michigan) groeide op in Miles City, Montana. Veel van zijn muziekstukken omschrijft hij zelf als "rural folk piano", en moeten een beeld tevoorschijn toveren van landschappen of seizoenen. Winston wordt ondergebracht in het
new age- genre. Hij is ook bekend van zijn tribute-album van Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts soundtrack.
George Winston's eerste album 'Ballads and Blues' deed niks maar in 1979 kon William Ackerman hem ompraten om voor Ackerman's nieuwe platenlabel Windham Hill Records te werken.
Winston omschreef zijn album 'Autumn' als
Christmas carols for Halloween. 'Autumn' werd goed ontvangen in RollingStone-magazine in 1980, en werd plots het best verkochte album uit de Windham Hill-catalogus.
Zijn albums 'December' en 'Winter into Spring' werden allebei platinum (meer dan een miljoen keer verkocht in de VS). De CD 'Forest' won in 1996 een Grammy Award voor "Best New Age Album".
Los van zijn piano speelt Winston ook blues-harmonica en slack-key-guitar (een Hawaiaanse tokkeltechniek). Dat doet hij echter alleen tijdens concerten, en daar zijn geen opnames van. Of beter "daar
WAREN geen opnames van." Tot 9/11. Op het album 'Remembrance: A Memorial Benefit', dat werd uitgebracht kort na de aanvallen op het World Trade Center is Winston wel te horen zonder piano...
Verder produceert hij opnames van Hawaiaanse slack-key-gitaristen voor zijn eigen label, Dancing Cat Records.

L' autre Michel "le grand": Michel Petrucciani
In 1999 overleed Michel Petrucciani (28 december 1962,
Montpellier, Frankrijk – 6 januari 1999, New York, USA), de man die gelijktijdig één van de grootste als één van de kleinste pianisten uit de jazzgeschiedenis was. De als dwerg geboren Petrucciani maakte indruk met een enorm krachtig
toucher en een onstuitbare
swing. Een pianoreus op zakformaat. Petrucciani heeft zijn sporen wel uitgezet. Prachtig werk in de groep van Charles Lloyd, schitterende duetten met gitarist Jim Hall.
Zijn vriend, producer en platenbaas Michel Dreyfus stelde speciaal voor het eerste lustrum van Petrucciani’s dood een verzamelalbum samen, waarop Petrucciani op zijn best te horen is.
Met name de opnamen die de pianist maakte met drummer Steve Gadd en bassist Anthony Jackson sporen de luisteraar aan om meteen naar de winkel te lopen om iets van Petrucciani te kopen.
Toch had Petrucciani niet echt een band nodig om te vlammen. In de solostukken van Solo Live in Germany speelt de kleine man alsof de dood hem op de hielen zat.
En uiteindelijk was dat ook zo.

Er zijn zo van die 'guilty pleasures'; bands die iedereen slecht vindt maar waar je stiekem van houdt. Bij mij gaat dat van 'heel slecht' (Army of Lovers), over "mwaah" (Deee-lite) tot 'best wel goed' (B-52's). Ook ABC hoort in dat rijtje thuis...
Martin Fry (9 maart 1958, Manchester, Engeland) is de zanger van de popgroep ABC. Toen ABC er op het einde van 1992 mee ophield, begon hij een solo-carrière. Hij treedt nog weleens onder de naam 'ABC' op, maar dan met andere bandleden.
Samen met gitarist Mark White was hij het enige constante bandlid van ABC. Ze maakten in totaal zes albums, met een aantal grote hits zoals: When Smokey Sings, Poison Arrow en The Look Of Love.
Het debuutalbum "Lexicon of love" (1982) werd een groot succes en kreeg lovende kritieken. De plaat leverde de hits Poison arrow, The look of love en All of my heart op. Het album werd geproduceerd door Trevor Horn en had vioolarrangementen van Ann Dudley (
Art of Noise). Mede daardoor staat het album nog steeds hoog in de lijsten van beste albums aller tijden.
Het wordt na drie albums stil rond de band als Fry blijkt de
ziekte van Hodgkin te hebben.
Toch komt in 1987 het vierde album"Alphabet city" uit en wordt een succes. Volgens de critici was ABC terug op hun niveau met dit album dat, in samenwerking met Bernard Edwards (
Chic), deels een eerbetoon aan de Amerikaanse soul bleek.

In the Summer with Crystal Fighters
Naar eigen zeggen haalde de band Crystal Fighters de inspiratie voor het debuutalbum Star Of Love uit het dagboek van de aan Alzheimer lijdende opa van zangeres Laure. In dat dagboek schreef hij flarden van een opera waarin ook allerlei traditionele Baskische instrumenten gebruikt moesten worden. Hierdoor ging de band op zoek naar deze instrumenten en naar de Baskische roots van zangeressen Laure en Mimi.
(Volgens mij weer zo'n P.R.-verhaal. Zeg nu nog dat copywriters geen leuke baan hebben!)
De Spaans/Engelse band, maakt electro(pop)muziek en bestaat uit twee leden uit Groot-Brittannië, een uit Amerika en twee zangeressen uit Spanje. De band is oorspronkelijk gevormd in Navarra (Spanje) in 2007, maar heeft zich daarna in Londen gevestigd.
Bij ons raakt de band nu bekend door het nummer Plage (dat bij mij nu tegen de irritatiegrens aan zit, terwijl ik het aanvankelijk een zeer zonnig nummer vond). Maar gelukkig is dit zo'n band waar geen label op te plakken is, en dat is maar goed ook...

Verdraaid mysterieus: Yma Sumac
Yma Sumac werd op 13 september 1922 geboren als Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo in het bergdorp Ichocan, in de Peruaanse Andes. Haar ouders waren Inca's van koninklijke komaf...
(Mooi P.R.-verhaal. Maar volgens andere bronnen zou ze gewoon een allochtone Amerikaanse zijn, die haar eigen naam -Amy Camus- omdraaide, en er een artiestennaam van maakte. De rest zou typische fake promo-praat zijn.)
Als kind
-gaat het verhaal verder- nam zij deel aan de religieuze bijeenkomsten in haar dorp. Daarbij viel haar wonderbaarlijke zangtalent op. Geruchten over haar stem bereikten Lima. Een overheidsdelegatie werd naar Ichocan gestuurd om de geruchten te onderzoeken. Niet lang daarna studeerde zij in Lima, waar zij als tiener voor de radio optrad. Producent en bandleider Moises Vivianco hoorde haar en zocht haar op. Voortaan trad Yma Sumac op met het orkest van Moises, Conjunto Folklorico Peruano.
In 1947 trad ze met haar bandleider in het huwelijk. Het paar vestigde zich in New York en een grillige carriere begon. Drie jaar lang trad ze op met de band van haar man.
In 1950 tekende zij een contract met Capitol Records, voor wie zij ongeveer tien jaar veramerikaanste Inca- en Andesmelodieen zou opnemen. Zij bleef onregelmatig optreden in de VS, waar het publiek de exotische
prinses met haar sterke uitstraling en het stembereik van vijf (!) octaven op handen droeg.
In 1961 maakte zij een toernee door de Sovjet Unie.
In 1971 verrastte ze iedereen met het rockalbum Miracles. Zij keerde terug naar Peru.
In 1989 nam zij een liedje op voor de Disney-compilatie Stay Awake (het nummer I wonder uit Sleeping Beauty) en begon ze weer op te treden. En de jaren 90 verscheen zelfs een dance-album: Mambo Confusion. In 1996 verschenen haar zeven albums op CD.
Yma Sumac overleed op 1 november 2008 in Los Angeles.

The Start of Summer sampler
This sampler is about summer days (as mentioned by the Belgian Raymond van het Groenewoud and the Dutch Kryst) and summer nights (Miles Davis and Najee). Summer seems to be a popular subject for songs (Shirley Horn, Moby and India Arie), whether some people look forward to it (Chris Rea) or long for the end (The Bleu Hawaiians).
I'll be off abroad this summer and it won't be to the UK (like Faithless). I'll probably take all of these songs with me though.

A Cook for Fat and Slim
Norman Cook (Bromley, 13 juli 1963), ook bekend als Fatboy Slim, is een Brits muzikant. Zijn stijl staat bekend als "big beat", een combinatie van techno, rock, en rhythm and blues. Hij zat achtereenvolgens in de bands The Housemartins, Beats International en
Freak Power voor hij solo begon.
Het album Better Living Through Chemistry bleek de grote doorbraak te zijn. Sinds zijn remix van de single Brimful of Asha van Cornershop hoog in de hitparades stond, vroegen grote namen als Madonna en U2 Norman voor hen te produceren.
Fatboy Slims volgende single was The Rockafeller Skank van het album You've Come A Long Way, Baby, (1998) en kregen een warme ontvangst. The Rockafeller Skank vergaarde onder andere internationale bekendheid als de titelsong van het computerspel Fifa 99. Op Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars (2000) is zangeres Macy Gray te horen en ook het lied Sunset (Bird of Prey), een langzamer stuk rondom een stukje tekst van Jim Morrison van The Doors. Een ander nummer op dit album is Weapon of Choice; de bijbehorende videoclip (2001) met een dansende Christopher Walken won diverse prijzen.
In juli 2004 werd het album Palookaville aangekondigd, waarop onder andere Slash Dot Dash en The Joker te horen zijn. In mei 2006 bracht hij het album Why try harder - The greatest hits uit. Met 16 eerder uitgebrachte nummers en twee nieuwe tracks: Champion sound en That old pair of jeans.
Fatboy Slim is ook gekend om zijn liveoptredens. In juli 2001 besloot hij een gratis concert te geven op het strand van zijn thuisstad Brighton. Dat werd echter stopgezet vanwege het onderschatte aantal toeschouwers dat hier op afkwam. Een jaar later, en beter voorbereid op zijn fans hield hij het opnieuw. 'The big beach Boutique II' was een feit. Aantal toeschouwers: 250.000 man.

Dubby King Tubby
King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock, 28 januari 1941 – 6 februari 1989) is één van de belangrijkste producers uit de geschiedenis van de dub geweest.
King Tubby was een belangrijk persoon bij het ontstaan van de dub. Al snel brachten grote producers opnames naar hem om de Tubby-behandeling te krijgen. De dub bracht een nieuwe dimensie in Jamaicaanse muziek, en zou de internationale danscultuur beïnvloeden.
Hij begon in 1968 te werken voor platenbaas en producer Duke Reid. Daarnaast had hij een eigen soundsystem, een mobiele disco, waarmee hij op straat de laatste hits draaide.
Tubby gebruikte de mixtafel als een instrument en vond daarmee begin jaren zeventig dub uit. Hij dubde onder meer werk van Augustus Pablo, Lee Perry en Johnny Clarke en beïnvloedde een generatie van producers na hem. In 1973-1974 ging de Jamaicaanse consument de plaat die ze wilde kopen niet alleen beoordelen op de producer of artiest, maar ook op de technicus. Platen die een B-kant hadden waar "King Tubby's version" of "Drum 'n Bass by King Tubby" op stond, verkochten meestal hierom, en niet omdat men de artiest op de A-kant zo goed vond.
Op 6 februari 1989 werd Tubby bij een roofoverval vermoord.

Diep dal, hoge toppen? Thomas Dybdahl
De Noorse singer-songwriter Thomas Dybdahl (12 april1979, Sandnes, Zuid-Noorwegen) was vroeger gitarist van de bands Quadraphonics en State of Mind. Zelf omschrijft hij zijn stijl als melancholiek en romantisch. In plaats van explosies probeert hij implosies in zijn muziek te laten plaatsvinden.
Hij trad wel eens eerder buiten Noorwegen op, maar met zijn album ‘Waiting For That One Clear Moment’ (2010) kreeg hij een grotere naamsbekendheid in Europa. Zijn nummers zijn een kruising van folk, pop, country en een vleugje jazz. Zijn aparte stem klinkt afwisselend als
Ray LaMontagne,
Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake en
Damien Rice. Hij heeft naar eigen zeggen zijn inspiratie gevonden bij het soort albums zoals Tim Buckley, Colin Blunstone en Serge Gainsbourg die rond 1970 maakten. En voeg daar ook nog
Van Morrisons 'Astral Weeks' bij.
Op 'Songs' verzamelde Dybdahl de hoogtepunten van zijn voorgaande albums. De verzamelaar lijkt vooral bedoeld om de rest van de wereld kennis te laten met de muziek van Dybdahl. De verzamelaar is een aaneenschakeling van overwegend ingetogen gitaarliedjes. De ballads worden hier en daar afgewisseld met iets meer uptempo-nummers die bij momenten bijna neigen naar vrolijkheid.
