(this weeks results!)
When I started, in my wildest dreams I never could've predicted that so many people would share my musical taste...
From another point of view: I get more than 2500 visits a day. And some 1440 of you comes daily.

This weeks collection is a kind of special edition.Because it's the
20th sampler, I only bring you artists who've appeared on previous compilations
(Maybe even with the same song. But I don't care to look that up, because I really like ALL the performers on this compilation).So you could call it a reprise...
Like all entries on my blog, this too is a example of my musical taste. Therefor I included Lisa Stansfield, Chic, Shakatak and Roger Cicero. But I kept in consideration what your favorites are as well (like India Arie, Serge Gainsbourg, Herbie Hancock and George Benson).
This weeks Belgian artist is Eva de Roovere with the utterly sweet "Zonde van de tijd". The track by Hollands top sax player Candy Dulfer is called "Saxuality". Doesn't need further explanaition, I reckon...

Hey, this is volume nineteen...
My favorite tracks on this compilation are definitely "Le coq et la pendule" by the late Claude Nougaro, and "Hey Nineteen" by Steely Dan.
The Belgian track is by Arsenal ("Release") and the Dutch song is more than 20 years old. Really "History", but still a great track by Mai-Tai...

Oordeel zonder vooroordeel: George Michael
De Britse popartiest George Michael (25 juni 1963, Londen) werd geboren als Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou.
Hij zat bij twee bandjes: The Culture Shock en Wham!. Het popduo Wham! bestond naast George Michael uit Andrew Ridgeley. De achtergrondzangeressen 'Pepsi & Shirley' en de basgitarist Deon Estus behoorden officieel niet tot Wham, en hadden ook daarnaast hun eigen carriere.
George Michael zong o.a. op de achtergrond van Elton Johns 'Nikita'. Ook met Aretha Franklin werd de hoogste notering bereikt met 'I Knew You Were Waiting For Me'. Hij scoorde ook met duetten samen met Mary J. Blige en Mutya Buena...
Na het album Faith (1987) kreeg hij genoeg van het popidool-gedoe en wou hij alleen nog albums maken, zonder foto's en zonder optredens. Hij wou dat het publiek over hem zou oordelen zonder vooroordeel: Listen without prejudice.
En vanuit dat perspectief gezien, is "Unplugged" zijn beste album...
Na een seksschandaal in 1998, waarna hij bekend maakte dat hij homoseksueel is, nam hij zichzelf op de korrel met het ironische "Outside". Gevolg: een wereldhit.
Jaja, een zeker gevoel voor
exposure en drama kan George Michael niet ontzegd worden...

On this volume the Belgian song is an album track by Daan called "Le vaurien". And if the Dutch song"Watskeburt" ("Wh'appened") by De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig would've been released worldwide, it would've become a massive global hit. Medeski, Martin & Wood is een genre op zich...
Vanaf hun oprichting in 1992 in New York zijn John Medeski (keyboards), Chris Wood (bas) en Billy Martin (drums en percussie) bezig om hun cultstatus om te zetten in wereldfaam.
In 1992 begon dit drietal aan een muzikale kruistocht door de VS in een kleine bus ingericht met kookstel en slaapgelegenheid. Overdag en soms ook 's nachts legden ze honderden kilometers af om 's avonds voor een kleine gage in allerlei rock- en jazzclubs hun mengsel van geïmproviseerde rock en jazz te spelen. In de daarop volgende jaren worden hun optredens door een legioen fanaten op de voet gevolgd. Er onstond een enorme uitwisseling van illegaal opgenomen cassettes van hun optredens...
In datzelfde jaar maakte MM&W hun platendebuut met 'Notes from the underground' met o.a.een aantal covers van Duke Ellington en Wayne Shorter-composities. Op het inmiddels ontbonden Amerikaanse Grammavisionlabel verscheen in de daarop volgende jaren 'It's a jungle in here', 'Friday afternoon in the universe'en 'Shack Man'. Het zijn albums waarop de groep zijn muzikale roots liet horen: de 'grooves' van Booker T. & The M.G's en The Meters tot meer abstracte improvisaties.
In 1998 tekende MM&W bij het grote jazzlabel 'Blue Note records'. Hun debuut-CD 'Combustication' was een combinatie van neo-jazz, hip-hop en alternative rock.
De opvolger van deze CD was 'Tonic' een live opgenomen CD vol jazzimprovisaties waarop John Medeski zijn hammondorgel inruilde voor de piano. In de tussentijd waren de drie muzikanten te horen op de CD van John Scofield "A go go".
De drie verlaten na zes albums (en een remix EP) Blue Note. Economische wetmatigheden verplichten dan tot een "Best Of". Voor wie MM&W niet of nauwelijks kent is dit een gedroomde introductie. MM&W is een genre op zich...

Ron & Russell Mael: still sparkling!
Bekendste misverstand over de broers Ron en Russell Mael (Hitler-snorretje achter de piano en kokette krullenbol met falsetto) is dat ze na hun monsterhit 'This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us' uit 1974 nooit meer iets gedaan hebben. Hun verzamelaar '
The Ultimate Sparks Collection' geeft van hun doen-en-laten een zeer compleet overzicht. En ook "In the Swing" en "Mael Intuition" geven een redelijke dwarsdoorsnede van hun carriere...
Maar ook hun CD 'Hello Young Lovers' (2006) klinkt zo fris en eigenaardig dat het gewoon niet te begrijpen is dat deze band al sinds 1971 albums aflevert. Na vijfendertig jaar nog zo relevant klinken is gewoon absurd. Net zo absurd als hun muziek zelf. Voor vele popliefhebbers zal Sparks net een stapje te ver zijn. Voor liefhebbers die hun muziek graag een beetje anders hebben, is deze band een grote aanrader...

Totalski No Problemski: Maanam
Er is bij ons is vrij weinig bekend over Poolse rock muziek. Slechts enkele in Polen bekende groepen hebben in de jaren '70 [Tadeusz Nalepa] en '80 [Maanam] in onze contreien op een concertpodium gestaan.
Een hoge notering enkele jaren terug van de Poolse deelname aan het Eurovisie Songfestival [Justyna Steczkowska] heeft de Poolse zangeressen even in het zonnetje gezet...
Maar
Maanam is een Poolse rockband die in 1976 is geformeerd door Marek Jackowski, Olga Jackowska en Milo Kurtis. De platen en singles die de band heeft uitgebracht behoren tot de meest populaire in Polen. In het begin van de tachtiger jaren stonden ze synoniem voor vrijheid en individualiteit, met hun new wave en glamrock. Ooit schreef de extravagante zangeres Olga Jackowska (ook bekend onder haar kunstenaarspseudoniem Kora) met haar punkuiterlijk en haar subversieve teksten Poolse popgeschiedenis.
Maanam scoorde gigantisch in Polen en ze gaven occasioneel optredens in Duitsland maar de grote doorbraak bleef uit. Ook na het verschijnen van verschillende albums voor de internationale markt (zoals "Wet cat", die bij mij in de kast staat) wist de groep geen poot aan de grond te krijgen.
Na 1984 werd het stil rond Maanam, en gek genoeg -net toen ze beslist hadden om hun gitaten aan de wilgen te hangen- werden ze door het Poolse publiek weer opgepikt. Een kleine revolutie, samen met de grote politieke omwenteling in hun land...
Hun grootste hits waren meestal de rustige nummers, over liefde, hoop, heiwee en vertwijfeling. Begrijpelijk tegen een achtergrond van oorlogen...
Tegenwoordig is de muziek van Maanam meer beïnvloed door rock, blues, reggea, ska, en wordt ze gekleurd met Indische klanken en Latijnsamerikaanse ritmes. Heel af en toe klinkt nog wat new wave door. Het enige dat nog echt overblijft is de podium-presence van Kora.

Song of a preacher man: Dusty Springfield
De Engelse popzangeres Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien (16 april 1939 - 2 maart 1999) werd in 1964 bekend als Dusty Springfield.
Samen met haar broer Tom en Tim Feild vormen ze het trio The Springfields. Na enkele jaren besloten de drie uit elkaar te gaan. Ze waren totaal uitgeblust.
Dusty werd een van de meest populaire Britse zangeressen uit de jaren zestig. Met 'You don't have to say you love me' bereikte zij in 1966 de eerste plaats in de Engelse hitparade.
Na 1970 was het gedaan met haar populairiteit. Eind jaren '70 werkte ze aan een come-back, maar die kwam niet echt van de grond.
In 1987 maakte zij onder de hoede van de Pet Shop Boys een kortstondige succesvolle come-back, die enkele jaren duurde.
Ondanks haar mooie carrière en het vele succes, loopt het leven van Dusty Springfield niet over rozen. Ze heeft borstkanker en laat zich veelvuldig behandelen.
In 1998 verkoopt ze de rechten van al haar songs voor een slordige 360 miljoen. Op 2 maart 1999 bezwijkt ze op 59 jarige leeftijd aan haar ziekte.

To B-tribe or not to B-tribe
B-Tribe is de projectnaam van de in Duitsland geboren Oostenrijkse musicus en producer, Claus Zundel. Hij opereert ook onder het pseudoniem Sacred Spirit.
Hij gebruikt de klassieke Spaanse gitaar en flamencoinvloeden en mengt die met trancy, ambient tunes. Vangelis is nooit ver weg... Als je het wil labellen, gebruik dan "Flamenco meets New Age meets Dance grooves."
B-Tribe deed voor het eerst van zich spreken in 1994 met de CD Fiesta Fatal!. Het was geen typisch B-tribe-album omdat het aggressiever zou blijken dan de volgende CDs, en het had ook meer diepgang.
B-Tribe was een niche-product zoals bijvoorbeeld Enigma's "The Cross of Changes" (ook uit 1994) en het naar zichzelf genoemde debuut van Deep Forest (1993).
"Fiesta Fatal!" en de vervolg-CD "Suave Suave" (1995) werden bestempeld als World music en tikten in de jaren '90 aardig aan in de States. De populariteit werd in 1998 bevestigd met Sensual Sensual. Dit album was donkerder dan zijn voorganger en was minder dance-georienteerd. Het vierde album Spiritual Spiritual had de meeste Spaanse referenties en was het meest ambient van allemaal, met minder drums en minder cello.
Het laatste album van B-Tirbe werd toepasselijk "5" genoemd, en dateert van 2003.

Working For The Man: Tindersticks
Tindersticks is een Brits muziekgezelschap dat tussen 1993 en 2003 een zestal studioalbums, een cd met filmmuziek en een cd met b-kantjes en rariteiten uitbracht. Kenmerkend voor de muziek van de band zijn de literaire, vaak mompelend voorgedragen teksten en de melancholische muzikale omlijsting.
Op albums van de band doet telkens een groot aantal muzikanten mee, maar de kern van de groep bestaat uit Stuart Staples (zang), keyboardspeler David Boulter, violist Dickon Hinchcliffe, gitarist Neil Fraser, bassist Mark Colwill en drummer Al Macaulay.
Het eerste, titelloze, album uit 1993 werd met zeer positieve recensies ontvangen en uiteindelijk door het muziekblad Melody Maker verkozen tot album van het jaar.
Voor het tweede album werd onder andere samengewerkt met Carla Torgerson van de Walkabouts. Net als de voorganger kreeg het album geen titel mee, en net als de voorganger waren de recensies weer laaiend enthousiast. Menig muziekjournalist nam het album mee in zijn eindejaarslijstje.
In 1996 verzorgde de band de muziek bij Claire Denis' film Nenette et Boni. De soundtrack bestond uit oud en nieuw materiaal. Ook bracht de band de single A Marriage Made In Heaven uit, een duet met actrice Isabella Rosselini.
Curtains (1997) is de plaat waarop alles wat goed was aan de eerste twee studioalbums samenviel met ijzersterke songs en een gepolijste productie en daarmee is de plaat het hoogtepunt in het oeuvre van de band.
Critici die de band verweten inwisselbare platen af te leveren werden de mond gesnoerd met Simple Pleasures (1999). De opvolger van Curtains liet een drastische muzikale koerswijziging zien. De stemmige strijkers maakten plaats voor een toegankelijker soul-geluid. Deze warmere muzikale omlijsting is ook op platen als Can Our Love... (2001) en Waiting For The Moon (2003) terug te vinden.
In 2005 werd onder de naam Working For The Man, een greatest hits compilatie uitgebracht.
Officieel is de band anno 2006 nog steeds bij elkaar, maar zanger Stuart Staples heeft inmiddels twee soloplaten uitgebracht en onder de naam Tindersticks wordt niet meer opgetreden.

Clifton Chenier est bien salé
Zydeco is een muziekvorm, die ontstond in het begin van de twintigste eeuw onder de Creoolse bevolking van Zuidwest-Louisiana onder invloed van Franssprekende Cajuns. De muziek is meestal up-tempo, en ze wordt gedomineerd door de diatonische accordeon Een ongebruikelijk maar geliefd instrument is het zogenaamde rubboard (Frans: frottoir).
Het genre ontstond als een samensmelting van traditionale Cajun-muziek met Afrikaans-Amerikaanse tradities die ook de basis waren voor de R&B en de blues. Amede Ardoin maakte de eerste opnamen van wat later zydeco zou worden genoemd in 1928. De muziek raakte in het midden van de jaren vijftig breder bekend dankzij Clifton Chenier (bijnaam "The King of Zydeco").
Men is het erover eens dat het woord 'zydeco' ontstond uit het Franse "les haricots" uit het lied Les Haricots sont pas salés. (een verwijzing naar een zanger die zo arm is dat hij geen gezouten varkensvlees heeft om de bonen die hij eet op smaak te brengen).Clifton Chenier (15 juni 1925, Opelousas / Louisiana, Verenigde Staten - 12 december 1987) was de eerste Creool die Grammy Award kreeg. Met een mix van Franse en Cajun two-steps en walsen uit het zuid-westen van Louisiana , gecombineerd met New Orleans R&B, Texas blues en big band jazz, creëerde hij aanstekelijke moderne zydeco.
Als zoon van een amateur accordeon-speler, werd hij beinvloed door de blues van Muddy Waters en Fats Domino, en door zydeco-opnames uit de twintiger en dertiger jaren
Zijn eerste accordeon kocht hij van een buurman in 1947 en kreeg daarop les van zijn vader. Vanaf 1944 trad hij op met zijn broer Cleveland in de dance halls van Lake Charles. Zijn eerste opname-sessie bij het radiostation van Lake Charles bestond uit zeven opnames, waaronder zijn eerste hit Clifton's Blues. Vanaf 1956 verliet Chenier zijn baantjes en werd full-time muzikant.
Hij speelde zelf op een diatonische accordeon; de gebruikelijke accordeon bij zydeco en cajunmuziek. Een ongebruikelijk maar geliefd instrument bij de zydeco is het zogenaamde rubboard (Frans: frottoir).
Chenier's eerste album voor Arhoolie Louisiana Blues and Zydeco had één kant voor blues en R&B en één kant Franse two-steps en walsen. In 1976 nam Chenier één van zijn beste albums Bogalusa Boogie op en formeerde zijn nieuwe band Clifton Chenier and His Red Hot Louisiana Band met tenor saxofonist "Blind" John Hart en gitarist Paul Senegal. In 1983, ontving hij een Grammy Award voor zijn album, I'm Here!.
Hij nam ruim veertig albums op, waaronder veel live-werk.
