Joss? Steengoed!

De Britse zangere Joss Stone (Joscelyn Eve Stoker (Dover, 11 april 1987) debuteerde in 2003 met het album 'The soul sessions', waarop ze oude bekende soulnummers als Some kind of wonderful nieuw leven inblies. Opvallend was de doorleefde wijze waarop de toen pas 16-jarige zangeres de liedjes zong. Ze werd op haar CD bijgestaan door mensen als Betty Wright, Angie Stone en The Roots. Als singles werden de White Stripes-cover Fell in love with a boy en Super duper love uitgebracht.

Eind 2004 volgde de CD die Joss zelf als haar debuutalbum beschouwt, omdat ze hiervan zelf de nummers had geschreven: Mind, Body and Soul. De singles You had me en Right to be wrong en Don't cha wanna ride werden hits.

Op 12 maart 2007 is haar derde album uitgebracht: Introducing Joss Stone. De eerste single heet Tell Me 'Bout It. De tweede wordt "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now". Op 'Introducing Joss Stone' werkte ze samen met Raphael Saadiq (bekend van D'Angelo, The Roots en Macy Gray). Daardoor werd het een plaat vol warme vintage soul, '70s R & B, Motown harmonieën en jazzy grooves. Maar tegelijkertijd is de CD erg voorspelbaar en mainstream... Ze moet uitkijken dat ze geen RnB-zangers van 13 in een dozijn wordt, in plaats van een soulzangeres van 1 uit 1000...
Nergens wordt tegen de haren in gestreken. Het wordt tijd dat het kleine meisje groot wordt, en dat ze laat zien dat ze ook haar op haar tanden heeft.
Haar haar rood verven volstaat niet, vrees ik...
