The way Saadiq sees it
Charlie Ray Raphael Wiggins (1966, Oakland/San Francisco) begon op zijn zesde bas te spelen. Na de middelbare school kreeg hij de kans om met Prince en Sheila E. te spelen tijdens hun Parade Tour in 1984.
Geinspireerd door deze ervaring besloot Raphael er een carrière van te maken en met broer Dwayne en neef Timothy Christian richtte hij eind jaren tachtig Tony! Toni! Toné! op. Met hun eerste single 'Little Walter' hadden ze in 1988 meteen een hit te pakken en hun tweede album 'The Revival' maakte in 1990 supersterren van Raphael, Dwayne en Timothy. Op het hoogtepunt van het succes van Tony! Toni! Toné! en na zes miljoen verkochte albums besloot Raphael de groep te verlaten om een solo-carrière te beginnen.
De eerste wapenfeiten waren twee filmnummers: 'Ask of You' voor de film
Higher Learning en 'Me & You' voor de film
Boyz in the Hood. Na deze twee singles stopt hij tijdelijk als artiest om bij te komen.
Lucy Pearl werd zijn volgende project: samen met Dawn Robinson (En Vogue) en Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) vormde hij in 2000 deze R&B-supergroep die het na één album al voor gezien hield. Saadiq was inmiddels ook aan het produceren voor Macy Gray, TLC en The Roots. Hij werkte ook aan albums van o.a. Kelis, Ginuwine, Kelly Price, The Isley Brothers....
In 2004 verscheen zijn album 'Ray Ray' via zijn eigen label Pookie Entertainment.
En Raphael Saadiq is tegenwoordig de man achter (en voor)
Joss Stone. Zijn laatste CD " The Way I see it" ligt dan ook heel erg in het verlengde van wat Joss Stone doet. Waar Saadiq zich voor zijn vorige CD's "Raphael Saadiq" as "Ray Ray" liet insprireren door Blaxploitation, koos hij nu voor Motown. Het resultaat is een ijzersterke plaat die de sfeer van toen op haast authentieke wijze weet neer te zetten. "Sure Hope You Mean It" klinkt als authentieke Sam Cooke, "Keep Marchin' en "Love That Girl" zijn onvervalste Supremes-Motown. Wilson Picket is de inspiratie geweest voor "Big Easy" en Smokey Robinson stond model voor "Staying In Love".
En het
namedroppen gaat verder: "Oh Girl" en "Sometimes" zijn schatplichtig aan Marvin Gaye, en "Let's Take A Walk" refereert aan The Temptations. Maar Saadiq heeft genoeg klasse en vakmanschap om (weer!) Joss Stone in "Just One Kiss" naar zijn hand te zetten, en om zelfs Stevie Wonder (in "Never Give You Up") boven zichzelf te doen uitstijgen...
Deze cd zit al we-e-e-ken in mijn cd-speler. En dat zal nog wel een tijdje zo blijven...

One word up: Cameo
De Amerikaanse groep Cameo was sinds 1974 actief in de muziekindustrie. De groep bestond eind jaren '70 uit maar liefst 12 man. Cameo scoort twee jaar na de oprichting, een zeer bescheiden hitje met 'Find My Way'.
Leider Larry Blackmon wil meer, en de groep wordt rond 1982 terug gebracht naar een 5-tal en als de groep dan nog niet echt aanslaat wordt ze twee jaar later zelfs teruggebracht tot een trio.
Genre-gewijs staat het funktrio voor experimentele electromuziek, gecombineerd met 'robot-samplers' en andere
'futuristische' geluiden. Het enige grote succes voor Cameo was dus 'Word Up', en in 1986 stonden ze wereldwijd hoog genoteerd in de hitlijsten met die song.
De band viel ook op door de rode tok die zanger Larry Blackmond voor zijn geslachtsdeel droeg...
Het jaar erop haalde de single 'Candy' nog de nummer 12 in de Nederlandse Top 40.
De zware funk verdween langzaam en de heren speelden ook andere stijlen als rock, rap en reggae.
Als gevolg verdwenen ze terug in de anonimiteit...

Bosshannover by Mo' Horizons
Mo' Hozirons bestaat uit de producers, muzikanten en DJs Ralf Droesemeyer en Mark "Foh" Wetzler. Droesemeyer is bekend van zijn samenwerking met o.a. Cunnie Williams en Randy Crawford.
Maar het collectief Mo' Horizons is in eerste instantie een
latin jazz- en funk-band uit het Duitse Hannover. Ze zijn vooral bekend van hun gebruik van sampling en moderne productietechnieken in de
latin jazz. Ze maakten vooral naam door hun veelvuldige aanwezigheid op de Buddha Bar-compilaties.
Maar niet alleen een grote CD-collectie gaf hen naambekendheid. Ze zijn ook veelgevraagde DJs en trekken nog steeds de hele wereld rond met hun mix van bossa, jazz en soul.
Het duo bracht in 1999 het debuutalbum ‘Come, Touch The Sun’ uit en verwierf meteen een breed publiek. Een track als ‘Foto Viva’ werd een
instant classic...

Van hier tot ginder Sven van Hees
De Vlaamse
chillout- en
lounge-muzikant Sven Van Hees (Antwerpen, 26 mei 1968) presenteerde als 15-jarige al een
jazz/funk-radioshow op een lokaal Antwerps radiostation maar brengt in 1989 zijn eerste vinylplaat uit bij USA Import Antwerpen, en in 1991 deejayt hij op de Love Parade in Berlijn.
In 1996 kwam zijn debuutalbum "Svengali" uit bij het Nederlandse label Arcade/Trust Foundation. Dat album met club-grooves en lounge-sfeer was zijn tijd vooruit. Twee singles "Freaksthan" en "Neighbours" verschenen nadien op de markt.
Beïnvloed door jazz en 70’s-funk, brengt Van Hees in 1999 het
lounge-album ‘Gemini’ uit, een eerste doorbraak en een juweeltje dat wereldwijd werd verkocht en het begrip 'lounge' op de wereldkaart zette.
In juni 2002 levert hij de opvolger ‘Calypso’ af : dezelfde mix van jazz en funk doet alle recensenten besluiten dat het om een nieuwe klassieker gaat in het genre. Het was Van Hees' hulde aan de jaren '70
fusion-iconen Quincy Jones en Lonnie Liston Smith. De single 'What Do You See' bewijst dat Van Hees thuishoort naast lounge-broeders als Kruder & Dorfmeister.
Hij deejayt, en verwerft (gepromoot door Naked Records USA) een vaste stek in de clubs van San Francisco, Las Vegas en Los Angeles.
Met ‘The Svengali Squad’ krijgt zijn muziek gezicht als hij zijn dancefusion, jazz, funk en soul live brengt met een zéér sterke professionele band bestaande uit Johan Vandendriessche (multi-instrumentatie), Paul Flush (piano, hammond, fender rhodes), Steinhardt (gitaar), Peter Schneider (percussie).
Op "N.E.W.S." (2002) goochelt Van Hees met funky loops, subtiele jazz en broeierige ritmes en tovert hier en daar nog met lekker in het gehoor liggende voice-sampletjes.
In 2003 compileerde hij voor het fameuze label Blue Note Label (EMI) “Into Blue” een jazz/funk-compilatie, waar hij de mogelijkheid kreeg om eens flink te neuzen in de Blue Note-collectie.
Synesthesia (2005), was zijn eerste album uitgebracht in eigen beheer, gevolgd door Exotica in 2007.
Anno 2009 staat hij weer voor een "crossroad". Met "Maverick", zijn nieuw album op Your Lips, begint hij aan een nieuw hoofdstuk. De instrumentale soundscapes worden geruild voor samenwerkingen met diverse vocalisten uit binnen- en buitenland, terwijl de sound toch onmiskenbaar Sven van Hees blijft.
Na 20 jaar is Sven Van Hees een merk op zichzelf geworden.

Diablo Swing Orchestra: a category of their own
In de tags van van iTunes staat
metal vermeld, maar dat is ruim ontoereikend om Diablo Swing Orchestra te omschrijven. Diablo Swing Orchestra is een Zweedse avantgarde-groep die een hoop stijlen verenigt. De band werd opgericht in 2003 en bracht sindsdien twee cd's uit.
Zijn brengen een mix van (
...hou je even vast!) Gogol Bordello met Epica, Ivan Rebroff met Rammstein, Henri Mancini met Metallica, Louis Prima met Within Temptation, Nina Hagen met Apocalyptica...
Knal even hun nieuwe cd "Sing-Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious" op je iPod, en laat je overrompelen!
"Siberian Love Affairs" is een dronkemanslied gezongen door Vikingen, begeleid door een draaiorgel. "A Rancid Romance" is een tango (inclusief staande bass en mariachi-trompetten) die gezongen lijkt door Klaus Nomi en zijn alter-ego. "Lucy Fears the Morning Star" kun je zo insturen voor het Eurovisie Songfestival (maar dan moet je het nummer half zo lang maken, de meisjesachtige
weirde onderwereld-stemmetjes halverwege wegknippen, en de conga's op het eind laten vallen). "Vodka Inferno" is de geknipte ("verknipte"?) soundtrack van een bruiloft die veel te lang is uitgelopen. "Stratosphere Serenade" is een ruim acht-en-een-halve minuten doordenderende musical. (Of opera?) (Of operette?)
Memoirs of a Roadkill had van -
godbetert- Jason Mraz kunnen zijn.
Nog nooit heb ik zo'n voortrazende muzikale achtbaan meegemaakt. Instappen. Veiligheidgordels vastmaken. En keihard genieten!

Ghouls With Attitude
I can't remember how I stumbled upon this two wonderfull Halloween compilations (months ago!) but they can be found on several places on the net. I had the impression that this weren't regular releases from a regular record company, and indeed I found out yesterday that they were compiled by
Otis Fodder.com.
(Unfortunately that site won't work untill ...aaargh, tomorrow, nov. 1st!)The production was done by the guys at
Oddio Overplay.
(Highly recommended music site!). And the artwork was beautifully executed by Suzanne Baumann at Fridge Mag.
I reckon the original uploader won't mind me putting the Ghouls With Attitude compilations here (and I would like to thank him -or her?- for compiling the collection and for making it available for everyone).
Listen to this breathtaking collection of spooky songs. They're utterly funny and bring you a wide range of musical genres, going from surf rock, over Mersey beat, to vaudeville and film soundtracks. Some tracks are spoken, some are just instrumental, but all of them are hilarious.
