The art of Michael Franks

Michael Franks (La Jolla, Californië, 18 september 1944) is een Amerikaans zanger en songwriter. Hij studeerde hoger muziekonderwijs, waarin hij een PhD haalde, en gaf les als muziekleraar.

Franks begon als zanger van folk-rock, waarbij hij zichzelf begeleide op de gitaar. Zijn later werk is eerder in te delen bij de jazz. Hij nam platen op met Sonny Terry en Brownie McGee, maar heeft ondertussen meer dan 15 soloalbums uitgegeven.
Mijn favoriete album is zonder meer "The art of Tea". Zijn meest recente is "Rendezvous in Rio".

Wie van het lijzige Californische gedoe van Jack Johnson houdt: Michael Franks is net zo relaxed maar neigt meer naar de piano-jazz dan naar de gitaar-geöriënteerde surfersfolk van Johnson. Maar laidback en charmant zijn ze allebei...
