L' autre Michel "le grand": Michel Petrucciani

In 1999 overleed Michel Petrucciani (28 december 1962, Montpellier, Frankrijk – 6 januari 1999, New York, USA), de man die gelijktijdig één van de grootste als één van de kleinste pianisten uit de jazzgeschiedenis was. De als dwerg geboren Petrucciani maakte indruk met een enorm krachtig toucher en een onstuitbare swing. Een pianoreus op zakformaat. Petrucciani heeft zijn sporen wel uitgezet. Prachtig werk in de groep van Charles Lloyd, schitterende duetten met gitarist Jim Hall.
Zijn vriend, producer en platenbaas Michel Dreyfus stelde speciaal voor het eerste lustrum van Petrucciani’s dood een verzamelalbum samen, waarop Petrucciani op zijn best te horen is.

Met name de opnamen die de pianist maakte met drummer Steve Gadd en bassist Anthony Jackson sporen de luisteraar aan om meteen naar de winkel te lopen om iets van Petrucciani te kopen.
Toch had Petrucciani niet echt een band nodig om te vlammen. In de solostukken van Solo Live in Germany speelt de kleine man alsof de dood hem op de hielen zat.
En uiteindelijk was dat ook zo.

The sunny presummer sampler

The weather has been fabulous the last couple of weeks. So to me summer has begun. Therefor I made another sunny compilation with warmhearted songs like the ones by Willie Nelsson, Paul Carrack and She&Him. It gets really hot with the tracks by Osibisa, Jah Cure and Incognito.

Between a town called Malice and Stanley Road: The Style Coucil

Samen met de Londenaar Mick Talbot richtte Paul Weller, nadat hij jarenlang The Jam had aangevoerd, The Style Council op.
Toetsenist Mick Talbot had reeds in verschillende groepen ervaring opgedaan, zoals Merton Parkas, Dexys Midnight Runners en Bureau.

In het begin van de jaren '80 heft Paul Weller The Jam op ten faveure van The Style Council. De punks van het eerste uur haakten al snel af, want The Style Council was nogal, eh.... ánders dan The Jam. De verschuiving richting soul, funk en jazz zat er de laatste jaren bij The Jam natuurlijk al lang aan te komen, maar met The Style Council kon Weller volop in de richting gaan die hij naar zijn muzikale overtuiging in moest slaan.
Het debuutalbum kwam er in in 1984, getiteld 'Café Bleu'. Jazz, soul en r&b waren het die de klok sloegen. Weller bleek in staat funky dingen te maken zoals 'Money Go Around', maar ook warmbloedige soulvolle popsongs als 'My Ever Changing Moods' en bijna klassieke ballads als 'You're The Best Thing'.

Commercieel is The Style Council echter geen succes, en ook de Britse kritieken zijn niet mals. Aan het eind van het decennium heft Weller de band gedesillusioneerd op. Hij gaat solo, neemt eerst afstand van zijn Jam- en Style Council-jaren, maar sluit zijn oude songs later weer liefdevol in de armen, en brengt ze in verschillende uitvoeringen voor het voetlicht.
Mick Talbot speelt af en toe nog wat met Weller als gastmuzikant op z'n platen....

Zip it up... The Squirrel Nut Zippers

The Squirrel Nut Zippers werden opgericht in 1993 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina door James "Jimbo" Mathus (vocals en gitaar), Katharine Whalen (vocals, banjo, en ukulele), Chris Phillips (drums), Don Raleigh (bass) en Ken Mosher. De band noemde zich naar een snoepreep.

Hun eclectische fusie van Delta-blues, gypsy-jazz, jaren '30-swing, klezmer en andere stijlen, maakt het moeilijk om hen een label op te plakken. Hun hoogtepunt kenden ze tijdens de swingjazzrevival in de late jaren '90, toen ze met bands als The Chevalier Brothers, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Roger Beaujolais Band, The Cherry Poppin' Daddies en Ray Gelato in een niche doken. De groep knipoogt dan wel naar de jazz uit de jaren 20 en 30, maar giet ook een serieuze geut blues in hun recept.

Het liedje bleef echter niet duren en de "Zippers" splitten in 2000...
In 2007 beklommen de originele bandleden plots opnieuw de podia. En sindsdien zijn ze sporadisch weer te zien...

Do good. Feel better. With Jill Scott.

Jill Scott (Philadelphia, 4 april 1972) is een Amerikaanse R&B-, soul- en jazzzangeres, songwriter, actrice en dichteres. Scott's muziek zweeft ergens tussen soul, funk en jazz met een opzwepende hiphopdreun. Ze haalt moeiteloos hoge noten, waardoor haar manier van zingen doet denken aan Minnie Riperton en Deniece Williams.
Ze werd ontdekt door de drummer van The Roots (Amir "?uestlove" Thompson) en werkte samen met Eric Benet, Will Smith en Common...

"Basically, what I live for is love" zegt Jill Scott op het intro van haar debuutalbum 'Who Is Jill Scott?'. Je zou daarom verwachten dat Scott een triest album zou uitbrengen na haar echtscheiding. Maar ze is vooral hitsig.
Op "Beautifully Human" trekt Jill Scott alle registers open. Vanaf het moment dat ze haar stembanden opwarmt in Warm Up tot en met het wegsterven van de laatste klanken van de accoutische versie van Bedda at Home (een bonustrack), is deze plaat briljant. Scott spat van de plaat af, of ze nu krolse en sexy liedjes (Cross My Mind) of lieve liedjes (The Fact Is (I Need You)) zingt; of ze nu zingt over een familiepicknick (Family Reunion) of over haar geliefde die maar niet wil zeggen wat er aan de hand is (Talk to Me, dat overigens een geweldige overschakeling van R&B naar jazz heeft).
Ze werkte mee aan de single 'Daydreaming' van hiphopartiest Lupe Fiasco, die ook verscheen op haar volgende album uit januari 2007. In september van dat jaar volgde 'The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3'. Op het sexy 'Come See Me' (van dat album) is ze nog subtiel verleidelijk, maar 'Crown Royal' en 'Ephiphany' zijn explicietere nummers, maar altijd met stijl en creativiteit.

Jill Scott werd voor meerdere Grammy’s genomineerd in verschillende categorieën. In 2005 won ze een Grammy voor ‘Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance’ met de single ‘Cross My Mind’ uit haar derde cd.
Scott presenteerde een vijfde album in september 2007: ‘The Real Thing’, en in 2008 nog een live-album...

Brilliance from Brussels: Toots Thielemans

Jean Baptiste "Toots" Thielemans (Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, 29 april 1922) is een Belgische jazzmuzikant. Hij is tot baron verheven door Koning Albert II.

Thielemans speelde al vanaf zijn derde jaar accordeon. Op zijn 17e ontdekte hij de mondharmonica; daarnaast speelt hij gitaar. Thielemans werd tijdens de Duitse bezetting gegrepen door de jazz, en wordt door velen als een van de grootste jazzmusici gezien. Zijn bijnaam Toots is afkomstig van de muzikanten Toots Mondello en Toots Caramata.
Zijn internationale doorbraak was in 1950, bij Benny Goodman op een Europese concerttoer. In 1951 maakte hij als gitarist deel uit van de begeleidingsband van Bobbejaan Schoepen. In 1952 emigreerde hij naar de Verenigde Staten, en speelde hij in de band van Charlie Parker en het kwintet van George Shearing.
Hij heeft samengewerkt met onder andere Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Bill Evans, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny en Paul Simon.
Zijn nummer voor mondharmonica "Bluesette" (1962) is honderden malen gecoverd door vele muzikanten.

Zijn mondharmonica speelt een belangrijke rol in de filmmuziek van "Turks Fruit" (1973) en van de Zweedse animatiefilm "Dunderklumpen" (1974). Daarnaast is zijn spel sfeerbepalend voor de leader van de politieseries "Baantjer" en "Witse". Thielemans woont ondertussen allang weer in zijn Brussel.

In 2005 werd hij genomineerd voor de titel van "De Grootste Belg". Hij eindigde op nr. 20 in de Vlaamse versie en op nr. 44 in de Waalse versie.

It Ain't Necessarily Classical: George Gershwin

De Joods-Amerikaanse componist George Gershwin, geboren als Jacob Gershowitz (Brooklyn, New York City, 26 september 1898 – Hollywood, 11 juli 1937) heeft tijdens zijn leven niet de erkenning gekregen die hij zo graag had gewild. Hij werd vooral bekend door zijn werk op de grens van klassiek en de opkomende jazz. Bij veel van zijn werk schreef zijn broer Ira de teksten.

Gershwin begon rond 1916 als liedjescomponist. Al snel kreeg hij landelijke bekendheid en kwam hij in contact met theaterproducenten. Hij begon musicals te schrijven voor Broadway; waar onder Lady, Be Good!, Oh, Kay!, Funny Face (later verfilmd met Fred Astaire en Audrey Hepburn), Show Girl en, Crazy for You. Gershwin wilde als een serieuze 'klassieke' componist gezien worden. Zijn eerste en belangrijkste poging daartoe was in 1924: Rhapsody in Blue, dat te beschouwen is als een poging om klassieke muziek en jazz tot elkaar te brengen. Verdere pogingen om serieus genomen te worden waren zijn Concerto in F (een pianoconcert) en An American in Paris. Ook deze muziek werd al snel in (musical)films gebruikt en ook nu vond Gershwin niet de erkenning die hij zocht.
Op een van zijn Europese reizen in 1928 zocht Gershwin contact met Igor Stravinsky, Francis Poulenc en Maurice Ravel. Hij vroeg met name aan Ravel of die hem compositielessen wilde geven. Ravel moet - volgens overlevering - toen hebben geantwoord: "Waarom wilt u een tweederangs Ravel worden, wanneer u al een eersterangs Gershwin bent?" Gershwin zette zich daarna aan het componeren van zijn meesterwerk: de opera Porgy and Bess, die in 1935 voltooid werd en waarin alle gezongen rollen door kleurlingen vertolkt werden. Enkel een paar kleine 'sprekende' rollen werden door blanken vertolkt.
Tijdens zijn leven was deze opera niet echt succesvol. Gershwin was hierdoor diep teleurgesteld. Tegenwoordig wordt de opera wel gewaardeerd maar toch niet vaak opgevoerd, omdat het moeilijk blijkt te zijn 'om een geschikte bezetting te vinden'.

Inmiddels hadden de verschijnselen van een hersentumor zich bij Gershwin voorgedaan en hij overleed kort daarna op 38-jarige leeftijd.

The Delight of Regina Carter

De Amerikaanse jazzvioliste Regina Carter (Detroit, 1966) begon heel jong op piano, maar op haar 4e jaar schakelde ze over naar de viool op aandrang van haar moeder.
Carter begon als een klassieke violiste, maar raakte geïnteresseerd in jazz toen ze de Cass Technical High School bezocht en haar beste vriendin, jazzsinger Carla Cook, haar introduceerde in de jazz. Thans wordt ze beschouwd als de beste violiste in dit genre.

Ze bewerkte composities van Django Reinhardt, stond jazzartiesten als Cassandra Wilson, Ray Brown en Wynton Marsalis bij en speelde met popsterren als Dolly Parton, Billy Joel en Mary J. Blige. Met pianist Kenny Barron maakte ze in 2001 de duet-cd Freefall.
Medio ‘90 verwierf ze bekendheid als violiste van het “All Female Jazz Quintet Straight Ahead”. De band produceerde drie albums op het Atlantic Jazz Label , maar daarna presenteerde Carter zich solo in de jazz wereld.
Eind 2001 speelde ze tijdens een concert in Genua op een viool “Il Cannone Guarnerius” vervaardigd in 1743, die eerder in het bezit was van Niccolò Paganini.
Carter is ook actief als docent en mentor. Thans treedt ze op met haar kwintet: klarinettist Greg Tardy, pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Matthew Parrish en drummer Alvester Garnett.

De klassiek opgeleide jazzvioliste heeft zich nooit laten vastpinnen op één muziekstijl.

So lively: Soulive

Soulive is een Amerikaanse hiphop/funk/dance/rockgroep. De groep is vooral geïnspireerd door jazz- en soulmuziek uit de jaren 60 en 70, en is opgericht in 1999. De leden van de groep zijn Alan Evans (1975. Buffalo, New York), drums, Neal Evans (1977, Buffalo, New York), Hammond B3 orgel, bass toetsen en clavinet en Eric Krasno (1977, Florida), gitaar. De groep werkt geregeld met gastmuzikanten.

In maart 1999 nodigden de broers gitarist Eric Krasno uit om in hun eigen studio mee te spelen. Door een jamsessie kwam hun eerste cd 'Get Down!' uit. Daarna begonnen ze te toeren en werd de cd 'Turn It Out' opgenomen. Op deze cd werkten onder andere John Scofield, Oteil Burbridge en Sam Kininger mee.
In het najaar van 2000 tekenden ze bij Blue Note Records. Doin 'Something was de eerste cd bij dit label, en Fred Wesley (trombonist James Brown) speelde hierop mee
In de komende jaren speelden ze in het voorprogramma van onder anderen The Rolling Stones en Dave Matthews. In 2002 kwam 'Next' uit en in 2003 kwamen 'Soulive' (live cd) en een cd met remixes 'Turn Out The Remixed' uit. In 2005 tekenden ze een contract bij jazzlabel Concord Records. Op dit label kwam als eerste de cd 'Break Out' uit waar Chaka Khan, Ivan Neville (van the Neville Brothers), Corey Glover en Robert Randolph op te horen waren. In 2007 kwam de cd 'No Place Like Soul' uit en werd de reggae/soulartiest Toussain uitgenodigd om mee te toeren.

Bij de cd "Up Here" (2009) hoorde een bonus-dvd, waarop sessies van het concert in The Blue Note in Tokio uit het jaar 2008 te zien waren.

The 5th sunny spring sampler

As Tom Waits puts it: you can never hold back spring. In this part of the world the sun is shining, everything is blooming and the future looks bright.
Although there are a couple of sad songs on this spring compilation, most of the songs make me happy, especially the ones by Charles Chaplin ("The Spring song" from the movie " Limelight") and by the world famous Belgian singer Jacques Brel ("Au Printemps"). But the absolute spring hit of the year to me is "'t Veurjaor" by the Dutch Ge Reinders.

The Japanese sampler

I promise I won't turn this into a tradition everytime a disaster strikes.
But I thought making another comp (after what happenend in New Zealand ) might be a good way to make you think of the magnitude and the consequences of this quake in Japan...
I do realise this selection of 16 Japanese songs won't change the situation, but please try to give the victimes and their relatives your thoughts. And preferably a bit more...

The 63rd BoBW Compilation

Here's another comp with some impressive names, I like to think: Randy Crawford, Harold Melvin, Michael McDonald and Herbie Hancock. My favorite songs on this 63rd BoBW comp are "If You Think You're Lonely Now" by Bobby Womack and "Send It On" by the Dutch trumpet player Rob van de Wouw. The Belgian track is "Do The Bop" by the amazing Funky Boudoir.
But if you really want to be surprised do listen to "I Loves You Porgy" by Diana Ross or "Jungle Love" by Cristina (Monet).

Maria Rita, the legacy

Als dochter van wijlen de legendarische, vroeggestorven, zangeres Elis Regina , en pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano heeft Maria Rita (Maria Rita Mariano, 19 september 1977, São Paulo, Brazilë) een zware erfenis en een groot stigma mee te torsen. Naar eigen zeggen heeft ze er jaren over gedaan om überhaupt te durven zingen, met zo'n legendarische moeder.

Haar eerste CD "Maria Rita", met een grote rol voor Milton Nascimento , was een bijzonder overtuigend debuut van 'de dochter van' geworden.
Terwijl de instrumentatie niet eens zozeer wist te imponeren (lekker in het gehoor liggende, akoestische pop-jazz, geschreven in Joni Mitchell-idioom), was het de stem die door die behaaglijke arrangementen juist alle ruimte kreeg om te schitteren.
Zich uitputtend in superlatieven sloot Brazilië Rita toen in het hart. Om een idee te krijgen hoe groot het succes van Maria Rita in Brazili‘ en de rest van de Latijns-Amerikaanse markt is, moet je maar denken aan het succes van Norah Jones .
In juli van dat jaar werd haar eerste zoontje geboren. Twee maanden later stierf haar artistieke partner Tom Capone. Dronken, op een Harley Davidson, kwam Capone, met meerdere Latin Grammy's (waaronder drie voor Maria Rita's debuutalbum) in zijn zak op de terugweg van de uitreiking om het leven.

"Segundo" is haar tweede album, waarop ze de samenwerking zoekt met een andere hedendaagse ster van het Braziliaanse firmament, Lenine. Hij produceerde deze CD in de typische "Musica Popular Brasileira"-stijl, een genre waarin invloeden uit de jazz en soul samensmelten met de meer traditionele samba-stijl.
Het album is live opgenomen in de studio, zonder edits achteraf, wat de intensiteit alleen maar ten goede komt, terwijl Maria Rita vooral op "Caminho Des Aguas" haar vocale talent ten volle benut. Hoewel ze nog vaak besproken wordt in de schaduw van haar immens populaire moeder, neemt ze toch weer een stap naar een volledig eigen geluid.
