Solid as Ashford & Simpson

Nickolas Ashford (4 mei 1942, Fairfield, South Carolina) en Valerie Simpson (26 augustus 1946 The Bronx, New York) zijn als koppel liedjesschrijvers/producenten en zangers. Ze hebben elkaar ontmoet in 1964 in het koor van de Harlem's White Rock Baptistenkerk. In 1966 scoorden ze hun eerste zelfgeschreven hit, Let's Go Get Stoned (voor Ray Charles).
In 1966 tekenden ze een contract bij Motown en schreven ze de hits Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing en You're All I Need to Get By voor het toenmalige duo Marvin Gaye en Tammi Terrell. Voor Diana Ross schreef het duo de wereldhit Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand. Ook hebben ze toen California Soul voor The Fifth Dimension en Cry Like a Baby voor Aretha Franklin geschreven. Tevens hebben ze liedjes voor Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Teddy Pendergrass, The Brothers Johnson, Chaka Khan en Rufusgeschreven.

Ashford begon als solozanger bij verschillende muzieklabels en nam liedjes op zoals It Ain't Like That, (wat later opgenomen zou worden door Martha Reeves & The Vandellas)... Simpson maakte in 1971 een soloalbum, waar het liedje Silly Wasn't I op staat dat later door 50 Cent gesampled is. Ashford & Simpson werden een zangduo in 1964 met de naam Valerie & Nick en ze namen de single I'll Find you op, de single werd geen hit. Ze verlieten in 1973 Motown en tekenden een contract bij Warner Bros.. Rond deze tijd trouwde het koppel en sindsdien zijn ze ook het zangduo Ashford & Simpson.

In 1996 openden Ashford & Simpson een restaurant in New York waar ook live gezongen kon worden, dit gebeurde door onder anderen Queen Latifah. Tevens hadden ze rond deze periode een eigen radioprogramma op New Yorks KISS-FM radio station. In 2008 kwam er een remix-cd van het duo uit en ze treden heden ten dage nog op in kleine, intieme zaaltjes in de V.S.

The sunny presummer sampler

The weather has been fabulous the last couple of weeks. So to me summer has begun. Therefor I made another sunny compilation with warmhearted songs like the ones by Willie Nelsson, Paul Carrack and She&Him. It gets really hot with the tracks by Osibisa, Jah Cure and Incognito.

Do good. Feel better. With Jill Scott.

Jill Scott (Philadelphia, 4 april 1972) is een Amerikaanse R&B-, soul- en jazzzangeres, songwriter, actrice en dichteres. Scott's muziek zweeft ergens tussen soul, funk en jazz met een opzwepende hiphopdreun. Ze haalt moeiteloos hoge noten, waardoor haar manier van zingen doet denken aan Minnie Riperton en Deniece Williams.
Ze werd ontdekt door de drummer van The Roots (Amir "?uestlove" Thompson) en werkte samen met Eric Benet, Will Smith en Common...

"Basically, what I live for is love" zegt Jill Scott op het intro van haar debuutalbum 'Who Is Jill Scott?'. Je zou daarom verwachten dat Scott een triest album zou uitbrengen na haar echtscheiding. Maar ze is vooral hitsig.
Op "Beautifully Human" trekt Jill Scott alle registers open. Vanaf het moment dat ze haar stembanden opwarmt in Warm Up tot en met het wegsterven van de laatste klanken van de accoutische versie van Bedda at Home (een bonustrack), is deze plaat briljant. Scott spat van de plaat af, of ze nu krolse en sexy liedjes (Cross My Mind) of lieve liedjes (The Fact Is (I Need You)) zingt; of ze nu zingt over een familiepicknick (Family Reunion) of over haar geliefde die maar niet wil zeggen wat er aan de hand is (Talk to Me, dat overigens een geweldige overschakeling van R&B naar jazz heeft).
Ze werkte mee aan de single 'Daydreaming' van hiphopartiest Lupe Fiasco, die ook verscheen op haar volgende album uit januari 2007. In september van dat jaar volgde 'The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3'. Op het sexy 'Come See Me' (van dat album) is ze nog subtiel verleidelijk, maar 'Crown Royal' en 'Ephiphany' zijn explicietere nummers, maar altijd met stijl en creativiteit.

Jill Scott werd voor meerdere Grammy’s genomineerd in verschillende categorieën. In 2005 won ze een Grammy voor ‘Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance’ met de single ‘Cross My Mind’ uit haar derde cd.
Scott presenteerde een vijfde album in september 2007: ‘The Real Thing’, en in 2008 nog een live-album...

Willie Hutch's Gonna Work It Out

De Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Willie Hutch (geboren Willie McKinley Hutchison - Los Angeles, 6 december 1944 - 19 September 2005) was ook producer bij Motown in de jaren 70 en 80. Hutch speelde als tiener in een doo-wop groep, The Ambassadors.

Hij verhuisde van zijn geboortestad Dallas naar Los Angeles waar hij ging schrijven en produceren voor het pop/soul-kwintet The 5th Dimension. Producer Hal Davis was op zoek naar teksten voor zijn compositie "I'll Be There", en vroeg Hutch hiervoor. Het nummer (dat eigenlijk voor de Jackson 5 was bedoeld) werd meteen de dag erop in de studio opgenomen wat uiteindelijk resulteerde in een contract van Willie Hutch bij het Motown platenlabel.
Hutch werkte voor artiesten als Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson en Marvin Gaye. Hutch heeft in die periode verschillende hits opgenomen zoals "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" en "Slick"...

Hutch produceerde ook de soundtrack voor de blaxploitation film "The Mack".

So lively: Soulive

Soulive is een Amerikaanse hiphop/funk/dance/rockgroep. De groep is vooral geïnspireerd door jazz- en soulmuziek uit de jaren 60 en 70, en is opgericht in 1999. De leden van de groep zijn Alan Evans (1975. Buffalo, New York), drums, Neal Evans (1977, Buffalo, New York), Hammond B3 orgel, bass toetsen en clavinet en Eric Krasno (1977, Florida), gitaar. De groep werkt geregeld met gastmuzikanten.

In maart 1999 nodigden de broers gitarist Eric Krasno uit om in hun eigen studio mee te spelen. Door een jamsessie kwam hun eerste cd 'Get Down!' uit. Daarna begonnen ze te toeren en werd de cd 'Turn It Out' opgenomen. Op deze cd werkten onder andere John Scofield, Oteil Burbridge en Sam Kininger mee.
In het najaar van 2000 tekenden ze bij Blue Note Records. Doin 'Something was de eerste cd bij dit label, en Fred Wesley (trombonist James Brown) speelde hierop mee
In de komende jaren speelden ze in het voorprogramma van onder anderen The Rolling Stones en Dave Matthews. In 2002 kwam 'Next' uit en in 2003 kwamen 'Soulive' (live cd) en een cd met remixes 'Turn Out The Remixed' uit. In 2005 tekenden ze een contract bij jazzlabel Concord Records. Op dit label kwam als eerste de cd 'Break Out' uit waar Chaka Khan, Ivan Neville (van the Neville Brothers), Corey Glover en Robert Randolph op te horen waren. In 2007 kwam de cd 'No Place Like Soul' uit en werd de reggae/soulartiest Toussain uitgenodigd om mee te toeren.

Bij de cd "Up Here" (2009) hoorde een bonus-dvd, waarop sessies van het concert in The Blue Note in Tokio uit het jaar 2008 te zien waren.

The 5th sunny spring sampler

As Tom Waits puts it: you can never hold back spring. In this part of the world the sun is shining, everything is blooming and the future looks bright.
Although there are a couple of sad songs on this spring compilation, most of the songs make me happy, especially the ones by Charles Chaplin ("The Spring song" from the movie " Limelight") and by the world famous Belgian singer Jacques Brel ("Au Printemps"). But the absolute spring hit of the year to me is "'t Veurjaor" by the Dutch Ge Reinders.

The 63rd BoBW Compilation

Here's another comp with some impressive names, I like to think: Randy Crawford, Harold Melvin, Michael McDonald and Herbie Hancock. My favorite songs on this 63rd BoBW comp are "If You Think You're Lonely Now" by Bobby Womack and "Send It On" by the Dutch trumpet player Rob van de Wouw. The Belgian track is "Do The Bop" by the amazing Funky Boudoir.

The 62nd BoBW jazz funk compilation

Sometimes I know exactly what I would put in my top ten of my all time favorite songs. And then I stumble upon a song that I might include as well. Or maybe not. And I start doubting. Am I sure? Well, on the other hand... Should I? Will I? Or not? You know what I mean.
On this comp there are three of those songs: "Breezin'" by George Benson, "The Walk" by The Time and "Yashar" by Cabaret Voltaire.
The regular Belgian song is "Shriek!" by Neven and the Dutch entry is the instrumental one hit wonder "Spookys day off" by the Swinging Soul Machine.
Oh, and by the way, don't get fooled by the "63" in the download link, you will get comp 62 when you download.

Stanton Moore Shall Not Be Moved

Stanton Moore, geboren en getogen in New Orleans, is het meest bekend als stichter van de funkband Galactic.
Maar naast zijn werk in allerlei bezettingen – van jazz-funk tot de heavy-metal van Corrossion of Conformity – reist hij de wereld rond met eigentijdse interpretaties van zijn New Orleans-grooves, waar hij ook al een boek/dvd-project aan wijdde.

"III" is het derde solo-studioalbum van Moore. Zoals elk album van Moore heeft het een gespierd en uniek karakter, maar daarvoor zijn ook toetenist Robert Walter en gitarist Zal Bernard verantwoordelijk.

Sinds 2008 kwam Moore met projecten als The Stanton Moore Trio, Garage A Trois en the Midnite Disturbers.
Na de orkaan Katrina stichte Moore de Tipitina's Foundation, die workshops verzorgt voor studenten, om hen de kans te geven om met professionele muziek samen te spelen.
Meer recentelijk heeft Moore samengewerkt met Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) en Boots Riley (The Coup) onder de naam Street Sweeper Social Club. In verscheen een album 2009.

The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club Street Parade Band

In 1977 blies de Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans een oude traditie nieuw leven in. De zogenaamde social en pleasure clubs dateerden van het einde van de 19de eeuw toen de meeste zwarte burgers zich geen levensverzekering konden veroorloven. De clubs stonden in voor hun begrafenis, en zorgden voor een band die de begrafenisstoet met droevige muziek begeleidde. Eens de overledene begraven, barstten de bands vaak uit in uitbundige dansmuziek.
Toen de Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club opnieuw een dergelijke groep samenstelde, nam die prompt de naam van de club over: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Bijna dertig jaar later is deze street parade band uit New Orleans wereldwijd een begrip geworden en is de groep synoniem geworden voor een onweerstaanbare mix van traditionele New Orleans jazz en blues vermengd met bebop, funk en R&B. De 8-koppige fanfare heeft een indrukwekkende discografie bijeen gespeeld en is ook te horen op albums van o.a. David Bowie, The Black Crowes, Elvis Costello, Dr. John en Norah Jones. Maar bovenal heeft de funky fanfare een ongelooflijke en aanstekelijke live-reputatie.
De vettigste en rauwste mardi grass- en voodoomuziek ter wereld, altijd uitmondend in feesten zonder weerga, met meer blazers en getoeter dan in de gemiddelde fanfare.

En The Dirty Dozen Brass Band verloor vrijwel al het persoonlijk bezit bij de ramp met orkaan Katrina. Ze geven op hun laatste CD 'What's going on' hun stemming goed weer met een herinterpretatie van het opus van wijlen soul-legende Marvin Gaye.

Of Women and Men in 2010

Last day of the year. And last post of the year.
Just to let you know that the sixteen tracks on this compilation are probably the ones I listened to the most this year. I made a ranking of my ten favourite CDs and added some excellent album tracks to get to the usual number of sixteen.
And by looking at the list I realise that I should perhaps stop mentioning jazz or funk. The comp has become an eclectic mix: rock (Ray Lamontagne), jazz (José James, New Cool Collective Big Band), electronic pop (Yeasayer, Styrofoam, Caribou) but mostly soul (Plan B, Solomon Burke, Sade, Ben l'oncle soul) and rap (Gil Scott-Heron, Kanye West, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Quincy Jones).

The most intriguing albums are the ones that try stretching boundaries, that try mixing genres, that challenge creativity... Therefor the ones that hardly ever left my CD player are Gorillaz, Kanye West and New Cool Collective. The most impressive albums though are "I'm New Here" by the legendary Gil Scott-Heron and "Blackmagic" by vocal wizard José James.
But do doubt my opinion if you want to. You can tell me which albums are absolute rubbish to you, and which ones are missing in my list. I even invite you to do so, and go to the comments.

The 8th Christmas Collection

One of the funniest Christmas songs ever is "The Elf's Lament" by the Barenaked Ladies. And one of the weirdest is without any doubt "24 December" by Pizzicato Five.
As on all of the BoBW comps there's a Belgian track too: this time it's a protest song about weapons being silent on Christmas day: "Kerstmis is dien dag dat ze niet schieten".
The Dutch track is a very energetic song by Hollands biggest star (Ik had nooit gedacht dat ik het zou zeggen, maar "Kerstmis" is een schitterende berenplaat. Muzikaal dan. En op productioneel vlak. Zolang Borsato maar niet overgeacteerd kleffe teksten gaat kwelen, die het metrum niet volgen en te veel lettergepen hebben ...)
"Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes" is also to be found on the cd "Christmas" by Bruce Cockburn, the best traditional Xmas album ever.
And this week there's an extra track (for after Christmas): do listen to the gorgeous track "Soon After Christmas" by Stina Nordenstam. Do close your eyes and let this sweet and melancholic song conquer you.

The 7th Christmas Collection

Yes, I know... there must be a trillion versions of 'Last Christmas'. But this one by The Puppini Sisters is kind of cute and sweet. It sounds as if it was recorded during the Second World War - although that's impossible. Another George Michael Christmas song is 'December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas)'.
Very nostalgic and typically Dutch is 'Kerstaquarel' ("Christmas water colour') and the traditional 'Hoe leit dit Kindeke' is played by one of the biggest instrumentalists Belgium has ever known.
Especially nice are the Christmas songs by  Ramsey Lewis, Funk Machine and The Temptations. But do listen to 'Christmas Box' by T.Rex also.

And next friday there will be another Xmas comp. In the meanwhile do enjoy this music, and have a nice weekend.

`t Staat als een brickhouse: The Commodores

De Commodores waren een van de grootste soul- en funkgroep uit de jaren '70. Later zou de groep wat meer opschuiven in de richting van de commerciële disco.

De groep kreeg een contract bij Motown nadat ze op toernee waren geweest met The Jackson 5. Ze zijn het bekendst van de jaren '70-hits als 'Still', 'Easy' en natuurlijk 'Three Times A Lady'.
Mijn persoonlijke voorkeur gaat meer uit naar het stevigere materiaal, zoals "Brick House" en "Too Hot To Trot".

Saxofonist en zanger Lionel Ritchie verliet de band in 1982 en ging solo verder. Hij zou een aantal wereldhits scoren met zeemzoete ballads.
De band ging door met een andere zanger en scoorde hun grootste hit met 'Nightshift', een eerbetoon aan hun Motown-collega Marvin Gaye.

Stomping and funking: The Brothers Johnson

The Brothers Johnson zijn een Amerikaanse band die sinds 1975 actief is. De eerste groep waarin de twee broers spelen, is The Johnson Three Plus One, waarin tevens broer Tommy en neef Alex Weir zitten. In deze groep, die voornamelijk op scholen speelt, ontwikkelt Louis zijn karakteristieke basspel, waarbij hij de snaren keihard met zijn duim bewerkt.
Na de highschool gaat de groep uit elkaar en de broers ontwikkelen zich dan als veel gevraagde sessie-muzikanten. Al dan niet gezamenlijk spelen ze o.a. voor Herbie Hancock , George Duke , Bill Withers , Bobby Womack en Stevie Wonder , en tevens treden ze enige jaren op als begeleiders van Billy Preston .

In '75 worden ze ontdekt door Quincy Jones die hen onmiddellijk meeneemt op tournee door Japan en hen op zijn elpee mee laat doen. Op hun eigen albums is een uitgebalanceerde mix te horen van stevige funknummers en ballad-achtig werk. 'Strawberry Letter 23' van 'Right On Time' wordt bij ons een bescheiden hit. 'Light Up The Night' is weer een sterk album met o.a. de hit 'Stomp'. 'Winners' is de eerste elpee die zonder producer Quincy Jones tot stand komt en is niet zo succesvol als zijn voorganger. 'Blast' bestaat uit hits als 'Ain't We Funkin' Now' en 'Stomp', aangevuld met een paar nieuwe nummers.

In de jaren tachtig is Louis Johnson steeds vaker als sessiebassist te vinden o.a. op CDs van Michael Jackson en George Duke.
Van 1982 tot 1984 ging de groep tijdelijk uit elkaar en hadden een aantal leden een solocarrière. De band bestaat op dit moment uit twee leden...

Wasted talent: the Gaturs

The Gaturs waren niet zo bekend als The Meters maar net als The Meters hebben ze een duidelijk herkenbare stijl ontwikkeld die heel typisch New Orleans' is.

The Gaturs werden geleid door de sessie-muzikant Willie Tee. Hun funk met jazz-invloeden kwam helaas maar op een paar singles terecht. De meeste nummers werden opgenomen in New Orleans,
en eindigden meestal ook als single maar kwamen nooit op een album terecht. "Wasted" is de enige compilatie onder hun eigen naam en geeft daardoor een goed overzicht van hun muziekrichting, die een beetje in de richting van Eddie Bo en van The Meters zit.
Het titelnummer "Wasted" is een percussiegedreven Blaxploitation-nummer terwijl "Hunk of funk" knettert van de blazers, toetsen en gitaren. Het funky "Cold Bear" wordt gevolgd door het discogetinte soulnummer "Nobody can be you". "Concentrate" en "The man that I am" leunen dan weer dicht bij Barry White aan en "First taste of hurt" is een gloedvol soulnummer. Het bluesy "One Thrill Fool" bewijst op zijn beurt hoe breed de smaak van The Gaturs is.

"Wasted" is een fabelachtig album van een band die ten onrechte nooit door een groot publiek werd omarmd.
