The 8th Christmas Collection

One of the funniest Christmas songs ever is "The Elf's Lament" by the Barenaked Ladies. And one of the weirdest is without any doubt "24 December" by Pizzicato Five.
As on all of the BoBW comps there's a Belgian track too: this time it's a protest song about weapons being silent on Christmas day: "Kerstmis is dien dag dat ze niet schieten".
The Dutch track is a very energetic song by Hollands biggest star (Ik had nooit gedacht dat ik het zou zeggen, maar "Kerstmis" is een schitterende berenplaat. Muzikaal dan. En op productioneel vlak. Zolang Borsato maar niet overgeacteerd kleffe teksten gaat kwelen, die het metrum niet volgen en te veel lettergepen hebben ...)
"Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes" is also to be found on the cd "Christmas" by Bruce Cockburn, the best traditional Xmas album ever.
And this week there's an extra track (for after Christmas): do listen to the gorgeous track "Soon After Christmas" by Stina Nordenstam. Do close your eyes and let this sweet and melancholic song conquer you.

The 7th Christmas Collection

Yes, I know... there must be a trillion versions of 'Last Christmas'. But this one by The Puppini Sisters is kind of cute and sweet. It sounds as if it was recorded during the Second World War - although that's impossible. Another George Michael Christmas song is 'December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas)'.
Very nostalgic and typically Dutch is 'Kerstaquarel' ("Christmas water colour') and the traditional 'Hoe leit dit Kindeke' is played by one of the biggest instrumentalists Belgium has ever known.
Especially nice are the Christmas songs by  Ramsey Lewis, Funk Machine and The Temptations. But do listen to 'Christmas Box' by T.Rex also.

And next friday there will be another Xmas comp. In the meanwhile do enjoy this music, and have a nice weekend.

Josh Groban Came Upon a Midnight Clear

Joshua Winslow Groban (Los Angeles, 27 februari 1981) is een Amerikaanse zanger van lichte populaire en klassieke muziek.
Groban werd toegelaten tot de prestigieuze muziek-/theateropleiding van Carnegie Mellon University. Na een van zijn optredens kreeg hij een aanbod dat hij niet kon weigeren: een platencontract bij Reprise Records.
Zijn eerste uitgebrachte nummer was het duet “For Always” met Lara Fabian voor de soundtrack van de film "Artificial Intelligence" (2001). Grobans debuutalbum kwam uit in het najaar van 2001, gevolgd door enkele uitverkochte concerten voor een televisiespecial. Die is later op dvd uitgebracht onder de naam “Josh Groban in Concert”. In 2003 werd zijn doorbraak definitief toen de dvd goud werd in januari en zijn debuutalbum goed was voor driemaal platina.
Groban speelde ook mee in twee afleveringen van de televisieserie Ally McBeal waar hij de rol speelde van een verlegen solozanger van een kerkkoor. Hij verzorgde tevens de titelsong 'Remember me' van de film 'Troy'. Die werd geschreven door James Horner.

Noël is een kerstalbum dat in 2007 werd uitgebracht. In de United States alleen al werden er vijf miljoen exemplaren van verkocht. Daarmee is het het vierde bestverkochte kerstalbum ooit, en het bestverkochte album van 2007...

Guilty pleasure Home Alone

Hoewel ik eigenlijk een pesthekel heb aan Macaulay Culkin en aan Joe Pesci, vind ik Home Alone een zeer vaardige kerstklassieker. Eigenlijk net zoals Jingle all the Way uit 1995 (met de onuitstaanbare Arnold Schwarzenegger).

Home Alone is een Amerikaanse komedie uit 1990 van Chris Columbus . Die regiseerde ook de sequel Home Alone 2 en Harry Potter en de Steen der Wijzen (2001), en Harry Potter en de Geheime Kamer (2002). Bovendien produceerde hij ook ...euh, Jingle all the Way.
Home Alone 1 is geschreven en geproduceerd door John Hughes , die al meerdere successen had geboekt met jeugdfilms. De film, over een kleine jongen die door zijn ouders wordt achtergelaten als ze op kerstvakantie gaan, werd de kaskraker van de jaren '90. Het grootste gedeelte van de film werd opgenomen in de voorsteden van Chicago. Voor de andere opnames, zoals die in Parijs, werden archiefbeelden gebruikt. Home Alone is nog steeds een populaire kerstfilm. In België werd hij zelfs tot beste kerstfilm verkozen in 2008. Wereldwijd bracht de film 533 miljoen dollar op.

De officiële Soundtrack van Home Alone werd uitgegeven door Sony Music Entertainment in 1990. De soundtrack bevat 19 nummers, bestaande uit de oorspronkelijke score gecomponeerd door John Williams aangevuld andere kerstliederen. De hele sfeer van het album leunt heel dicht aan bij ...euh, Harry Potter.

Touching: Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan (Halifax (Nova Scotia), 28 januari 1968) is een Canadese zangeres. Ze werd geïnspireerd door Cat Stevens, Simon & Carfunkel, Kate Bush en Peter Gabriel. Toen ze zeventien was en op school in een bandje speelde kreeg ze al een uitnodiging om naar Vancouver te komen om aan een muziekcarrière te werken.

Ze speelde toen in de New Wave-band October Game. In 1988 tekende ze een platencontract bij het onafhankelijke label Nettwerk. Ze verhuisde naar Vancouver, waar ze in 1988 haar eerste album opnam. McLachlan verkocht sinds haar debuutalbum "Touch" (1988) meer dan 25 miljoen albums en won drie Grammy Awards. Haar werk bestaat uit negen studioalbums en nog wat live- en remixuitgaven...

In Europa is de zeer getalenteerde zangeres met de heldere stem nooit echt doorgebroken.

Stunt! If they had a 1000000 albums: Barenaked Ladies

De Barenaked Ladies is een geinige folk-pop-rock-band uit Toronto, Canada.
De groep is opgericht in 1988 en maakt gebruik van gevatte en ironische teksten. Ondertussen geniet de band grote bekendheid in Canada en, in iets mindere mate, de Verenigde Staten. Een doorbraak in Europa is tot dusver echter uitgebleven.

Ze staan het meest bekend om hun singles Pinch Me, If I Had $1000000, The Old Apartment en One Week, waarbij het laatste nummer zelfs enige tijd in Europa populariteit wist te verwerven. Ook zijn ze befaamd om hun live shows.
De muziek heeft wel wat weg van They Might Be Giants. In 1991 brengen ze in eigen beheer een cassette uit (The Yellow Tape) die zowaar in de Canadese album Top 20 terecht komt. Dit snelle succes zorgt voor een platencontract. Het eerste album van de Barenaked Ladies verschijnt in 1992: Gordon. Aan aantal studio-albums en een live cd later behaalt de groep nij ons haar eerste succesje met het van Stunt (1998) afkomstige 'One Week'. De single haalt in de Verenigde Staten de eerste plaats. Maroon verschijnt eind 2000. Het album is geproduceerd door Don Was.
In 2001 bracht de band een compilatie-album uit, Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits 1991-2001. Het album bevat 15 nummers van de vorige albums, twee nummers van andere compilaties en twee nieuwe nummers. In 2003 werd Everything to Everyone uitgegeven. Maar ondanks goede recensies, verkocht dit album erg zwak.

Het volgende album, Barenaked for the Holidays, was het eerste onafhankelijke project sinds The Yellow Tape alsmede het eerste album dat was opgenomen in Page' eigen studio. In januari van 2006 voltooiden ze opnames voor een nieuwe CD. Ze besloten de nummers te spreiden over twee albums. Het eerste album, Barenaked Ladies Are Me kwam in september uit. Enkele maanden later, in het nieuwe jaar, volgde het tweede album, Barenaked Ladies Are Men.

The Unforgettable Nat King Cole

Nathaniel Adams Coles (Montgomery, 17 maart 1919 - Santa Monica, 15 februari 1965) wordt algemeen beschouwd als de beste mannelijke vocale jazz- en balladvertolker van de jaren vijftig en zestig.
Vanaf zijn twaalfde jaar bespeelt "Nat" het kerkorgel en zingt hij kerkliederen. Zijn echte interesse gaat echter uit naar jazzmuziek. Zijn ouders kunnen de belangstelling voor de jazzmuziek niet echt waarderen. Jazz wordt immers in de nachtclubs gespeeld.

In het jaar 1936 vertrekt Nat naar Los Angeles, en geeft van 1936 tot 1945 zijn naam aan The King Cole Trio. In 1943 neemt hij 'Straighten Up and Fly Right' op, dat z'n eerste nationale hit wordt. Het nummer is gebaseerd op één van z'n vaders preken en op een bekend zwart volksverhaal. Cole wordt door zijn trio-opnamen als één van de groten uit de jazzwereld beschouwd.
Vanaf 1945 besluit Nat zijn bijzondere stem ook buiten de jazz te laten horen. Hij ontwikkelt zich meer en meer als (jazz)balladzanger. Zijn herkenbare stem zorgt voor een miljoenenomzet bij platenmaatschappij Capitol.
Wanneer hij in 1948 als eerste zwarte Amerikaan een huis koopt in de blanke buurt Hancock Park in Los Angeles vertellen de eigenaren hem dat ze geen "ongewensten" in de buurt willen. Cole antwoordt: "Ik ook niet. En als ik een ongewenst iemand zie komen, ben ik de eerste die klaagt."
In de jaren veertig is Cole de eerste Afro-Amerikaan met een eigen radioprogramma en in de jaren 1956-1957 heeft hij als eerste zwarte Amerikaan een eigen wekelijkse televisieshow bij NBC. Daarnaast treedt hij herhaaldelijk als filmacteur op.
Cole rookte zodat zijn stem voldoende laag bleef. In oktober 1964 wordt bij hem longkanker geconstateerd. De verschillende behandelingen slaan niet aan en Nat King Cole overlijdt begin '65 in het St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica (Californië).
Hij was getrouwd met Maria Ellington en had vijf kinderen. Ook zijn dochter Natalie en zijn jongere broer Freddie zijn zangers.
In de jaren negentig wordt Cole opnieuw populair, dankzij zijn dochter Nathalie, die op de CD 'Unforgettable' haar zang combineert met oude opnamen van haar vader.

A Season In Chaos

'A Brutal Christmas (The Season In Chaos)' is een metal-verzamelaar, met heftige versies van Kerstklassiekers...
Ergens kan ik die twee niet rijmen: recht-toe-recht-aan-rockers die lak hebben aan alles wat niet zwart/wit is... die dan de meest belegen melodieën ter wereld naar hun hand zetten. Je zou toch denken dat uitgerekend die types daar met een grote boog omheen lopen.
Of is dit humoristisch bedoeld? Maar aan de andere kant kun je hard-rockers of metal-fans zelden op een greintje humor betrappen.

Hoe dan ook ...het is bij alle cover-versies (in alle genres) hetzelfde: sommige werken, en sommige niet. Er gebeurt wel degelijk iets aparts op bijvoorbeeld "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (door Kekal), "Mary Did You Know?" (Royal Anguish), "O Come All Ye Faithful" (Hearken) en de verrekte intense versie van "The Little Drummer Boy" (door Tortured Conscience).

En hou je niet van dergelijke dubieuze CDs, dan heb je nog dit voordeel: zet deze CD op als je huis vol zit met familieleden die je enkel ziet als ze hun buik kunnen rond eten (om over het drinken nog te zwijgen) en ze zijn in 'no time' de deur uit!

The 6th Christmas Collection

...and there's another one! A hot one. Already the sixth Christmas compilation.
Let me know which BoBW Xmas sampler, or which song, your favorite is. I'm very enchanted by "Hot Christmas" (Squirrel Nut Zippers). But I can listen to "Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis" (Tom Waits) and "Funky funky Christmas" (Electric Jungle) over and over again.
Although "Vrede" by the Dutch Ruth Jacott is not a Xmas song in the true sense, it talks about peace, just like the songs by Norah Jones ("Peace") and The Pasadenas ("Give a little peace") do.
And I can't help smiling when I hear "Frosty the snowman" by Dr. John & Leon Redbone. I don't know why but I like this version a lot.

Trans Siberian Orchestra And Other Stories

Het Trans Siberian Orchestra (vaak aangeduid als TSO) is een orkest dat progressieve rock maakt en is opgericht in 1996 in New York door Paul O'Neill, in samenwerking met Robert Kinkel en zanger Jon Oliva van de band Savatage.
O'Neill was producer van rockbands als Aerosmith, Humble Pie en Scorpions, en later begon hij met het schrijven en produceren voor Savatage. Het concept om kerstliedjes te spelen in de stijl van een rockopera werd niet goed ontvangen door de platenmaatschappijen, maar werd toch een succes.

Het Trans-Siberian Orchestra bracht zijn debuutalbum Christmas Eve And Other Stories in 1996 uit, en dat is tot nu toe ook hun bestverkochte album. Hun album The Christmas Attic uit 1998 was een gelijksoortig conceptalbum met een kerstthema. In 2000 kwam hun eerste niet-Kerstmis-album 'Beethoven's Last Night' uit, een conceptalbum over Ludwig van Beethoven's laatste nacht op aarde.
In de studio, gebruikt het Trans-Siberian Orchestra een volledig 60-koppig orkest en een koor. Tijdens de tournees bestaat de band uit 14 muzikanten, 14 zangers en twee vertellers.

Na enkele jaren op tournee te zijn geweest, gingen ze terug naar de studio om Lost Christmas Eve op te nemen.
In 2006 is er getoerd, maar werd ook nog gewerkt aan het album Night Castle, dat in 2007 uit zou komen. Het zal onder meer O Fortuna van Carl Orff's Carmina Burana bevatten. Evenals Beethoven's last night is deze CD echter ook ernstig vertraagd...

Leon Redbone Whistling On an Island

Leon Redbone (26 augustus 1949) is zonder meer een van de meest mysterieuze artiesten die er zijn. Hij speelt jazz en blues uit het begin van de 20e eeuw, en wordt "de bekendste niet-bekende Amerikaanse muzikant" genoemd.

Hij is volgens vage bronnen geboren op Cyprus, uit Armeense ouders, en zou Dickran Gobalian heten. Redbone cultiveert een aura van geheimzinnigheid om zich heen, en daarom is het niet eenvoudig om biografische gegevens te vinden...

Hij heeft jaren in Canada geleefd, waar hij ook zijn eerste optredens deed. Zijn eerste concerten en zijn verschijning op festivals in de sixties en seventies bezorgden hem zijn muzikale reputatie.
Ooit werd beweerd dat Redbone Frank Zappa was in vermomming, maar sinds Zappa stierf is dat gerucht ook stilgevallen. Later werd hij bij Saturday Night Live herhaaldelijk aangekondigd als "Andy Kaufman ...maybe or maybe not" (Ze zijn allebei in 1949 geboren).

In 1974 stond in Rolling Stone Magazine een groot artikel over Redbone, ruim een jaar voor hij zijn eerste platencontracht tekende. Redbone bracht in 1975 zijn debuutalbum, On the Track, uit.
Redbone maakte flink wat muziek voor reclamespots, en een behoorlijk aantal minder bekende soundtrack naast zijn dozijn reguliere albums.

Zijn schaarse concerten worden gekenmerkt door de bizarre humor, en de voortdurende verwijzing naar de datum waarop Redbone veel van zijn songs zou geschreven hebben (Redbone speelt veel traditionele instrumentals en oude covers -denk daarbij aan Jerry Roll Morton, Fats Waller of Bing Crosby-dus van voor zijn tijd, en zo houdt hij het raadsel rond zijn leeftijd in stand).

Redbone overleefde in de vroege jaren '80 een vliegtuigcrash, en vliegt sindsdien niet meer.
Er wordt gezegd dat hij met zijn vrouw Beryl Handler (een jazz-producer) in de buurt van New Hope (Pennsylvania) zou leven, en een dochter zou hebben...

When Harry Connick, Jr. met you

De Amerikaanse zanger, pianist, en acteur Joseph Harry Fowler Connick, Jr. (New Orleans, 11 september 1967) begon op driejarige leeftijd met pianospelen, en hij zat al op zijn tiende in een jazzband. Als hij op zijn negentiende zijn eerste album opneemt, heeft hij diverse pianocompetities in het beroemde French Quarter gewonnen.

Zijn grote doorbraak komt in 1989 met de filmmuziek van When Harry Met Sally, die meermaals platina wordt. Inmiddels heeft Connick behalve diverse gouden en multi-platina-albums en meerdere Grammy Awards op zijn palmares staan, waaronder die voor Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance.

Begin 2007 verscheen het derde deel in de Connick on piano-serie Chanson Du Vieux Carré. Van dit album is een deel van de opbrengst bestemd voor de New Orleans Habitat Musicians Village, een project dat de crooner samen met saxofonist Branford Marsalis heeft opgezet om de muzikanten te helpen die getroffen zijn door de orkaan Katrina in 2005.
Ook een deel van de opbrengsten van de cd Oh My New Orleans, die in september 2007 in Nederland en België verscheen, zijn hiervoor bestemd...
