Graham Gouldman had eerder hits geschreven voor The Yardbirds en The Hollies, alvorens de groep te vormen. Dat gaf 10cc een stevig songwriters-basis en het gaf hem een nieuw platform voor zijn soms fijne, soms sardonische humor.
De groep bestond uit Eric Stewart (zang en gitaar), Lol Creme (zang, gitaar en keyboard), Graham Gouldman (bas) en Kevin Godley (drums). De groep werd al snel bekend door hun grappige, hedendaagse teksten en innovatieve muziekstijl.
'How Dare You' is hun meest bejubelde album. De songs zijn ernstiger dan die op de vroegere albums, met de uitzonderingen van de geestige 'I Wanna Rule the World', en de sarcastisch hymne 'Art For Art's Sake'.
Paul Burgess kwam in de plaats van Godley en Creme die in 1976 de band verlieten. Vlak daarna scoorde 10cc zijn grootste hit met het (weerom) grappige en autobiografische "Dreadlock holiday".
Godley & Creme maakten furore als zingend duo, maar zijn veel beter bekend als de producers van videoclips (o.a. "Girls on film" van Duran Duran). De video die ze maakten voor hun lied "Cry" in 1985 is bijzonder omdat het een van de eerste mainstreamvideo's is die de morphing-techniek gebruikt.
Gouldman vormde later samen met Andrew Gold de groep Wax.
