Between a town called Malice and Stanley Road: The Style Coucil

Samen met de Londenaar Mick Talbot richtte Paul Weller, nadat hij jarenlang The Jam had aangevoerd, The Style Council op.
Toetsenist Mick Talbot had reeds in verschillende groepen ervaring opgedaan, zoals Merton Parkas, Dexys Midnight Runners en Bureau.

In het begin van de jaren '80 heft Paul Weller The Jam op ten faveure van The Style Council. De punks van het eerste uur haakten al snel af, want The Style Council was nogal, eh.... ánders dan The Jam. De verschuiving richting soul, funk en jazz zat er de laatste jaren bij The Jam natuurlijk al lang aan te komen, maar met The Style Council kon Weller volop in de richting gaan die hij naar zijn muzikale overtuiging in moest slaan.
Het debuutalbum kwam er in in 1984, getiteld 'Café Bleu'. Jazz, soul en r&b waren het die de klok sloegen. Weller bleek in staat ultra-funky dingen te maken zoals 'Money Go Around', maar ook warmbloedige soulvolle popsongs als 'My Ever Changing Moods' en bijna klassieke ballads als 'You're The Best Thing'.

Commercieel is The Style Council evenwel geen succes, en ook de Britse kritieken zijn niet mals, en aan het eind van het decennium heft Weller de band gedesillusioneerd op. Hij gaat solo, neemt eerst afstand van zijn Jam- en Style Council-jaren, maar sluit zijn oude songs later weer liefdevol in de armen, en brengt ze in verschillende uitvoeringen voor het voetlicht.
Mick Talbot speelt af en toe nog wat met Paul als gastmuzikant op z'n platen.
 
Maar een reünie? Die zit er volgens Paul voorlopig niet in. Over een Jam-reünie zei hij ooit dat hij "nog liever stront eet", over een Style Council-terugkeer was hij iets milder. "Maar reken er maar niet op", klonk het gedecideerd...
