The New Year's Compilation 2010

Just try to compile a song collection about the new year without including Abba or U2. I managed to leave Abba out, but I just had to include "New Year's day". I'm not really a fan of His Holyness Bono, but I couldn't resist to the Canadian singer Garou. His version sounds more like Daniel Lanois than U2 ever did, or will do.

A Season In Chaos

'A Brutal Christmas (The Season In Chaos)' is een metal-verzamelaar, met heftige versies van Kerstklassiekers...
Ergens kan ik die twee niet rijmen: recht-toe-recht-aan-rockers die lak hebben aan alles wat niet zwart/wit is... die dan de meest belegen melodieën ter wereld naar hun hand zetten. Je zou toch denken dat uitgerekend die types daar met een grote boog omheen lopen.
Of is dit humoristisch bedoeld? Maar aan de andere kant kun je hard-rockers of metal-fans zelden op een greintje humor betrappen.

Hoe dan ook ...het is bij alle cover-versies (in alle genres) hetzelfde: sommige werken, en sommige niet. Er gebeurt wel degelijk iets aparts op bijvoorbeeld "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (door Kekal), "Mary Did You Know?" (Royal Anguish), "O Come All Ye Faithful" (Hearken) en de verrekte intense versie van "The Little Drummer Boy" (door Tortured Conscience).

En hou je niet van dergelijke dubieuze CDs, dan heb je nog dit voordeel: zet deze CD op als je huis vol zit met familieleden die je enkel ziet als ze hun buik kunnen rond eten (om over het drinken nog te zwijgen) en ze zijn in 'no time' de deur uit!

Voortdurend op de been: Ray LaMontagne

Ray Charles LaMontagne (Nashua, New Hampshire, 18 juni 1973) is een Amerikaanse folksinger-songwriter. Kort na Rays geboorte verliet zijn moeder zijn vader, en daardoor raakte zijn moeder met haar zes kinderen van de regen in de drup. LaMontagne vond na veel rondzwerven een baan in een schoenenfabriek in Lewiston. Op een morgen hoorde hij het liedje “Treetop Flyer” van Stephen Stills op de radio. Nadat hij het album had gekocht, besloot LaMontagne om zijn baan eraan te geven en een poging te doen om een zangcarrière te beginnen.

In 1999 begon hij met toeren. In die zomer nam hij ook een demo op met tien nummers die hij naar verschillende zalen in de omgeving stuurde. De eigenaar van een theater in de buurt nodigde hem uit om op te treden en een zakenman hoorde later LaMontagnes demo en stelde hem voor aan Jamie Ceretta van Chrysalis Music Publishing.

Tot nu toe heeft LaMontagne drie albums uitgebracht, “Trouble” (2004), “Till the Sun Turns Black” (2006) en “Gossip in the Grain” (2008). Ray Lamontagne staat vooral bekend om zijn zachte en hese stem. Hij vindt vaak verstilde kleine schetsjes en legt daarbij zijn hart open. Zijn wat melancholische zang lijkt soms alsof hij verlegen is om te zingen... Soms vallen vergelijkingen met Neil Young of Bob Dylan, maar dat is onzin. Denk eerder aan Leon Redbone of Bon Iver...

LaMontagne heeft een aantal awards gewonnen voor zijn muziek, en treedt vaak op voor goede doelen.

Arretez, La Caravane Passe

De maffe virtuositeit van La Caravane Passe laat zich hier en daar meten met die van de Taraf de Haïdouks en Fanfare Ciocarlia.
Daarbij laten de Fransen met een flinke scheut rock-'n-roll, reggae en rap horen dat zij gewone jongens van de consumptiemaatschappij zijn. De mestizo-mood van La Caravane Passe is een kruising tussen Les Negresses Vertes, Mano Negra en Fanfare Ciocarlia'. Gelukkig blijf je aan alles horen dat hun hart op de juiste plek klopt. Ze verzonnen zelfs een eigen universum: Plèchti, een  virtueel dorp met een aparte taal: Plechtian - een mix van Servisch, Italiaans, Frans, Joods, Engels en Bulgaars.

Hun live-shows zijn nu al legendarisch in eigen land en neigen naar de zigeunertraditie, maar met veel meer ska, dixieland en rock'n'roll.

Na hun debuutalbum Go to Plechti (2006) ging de groep in 2007 de studio in om te werken aan het tweede album. Het resultaat werd "Velkom Plèchti" (2008). En ze scoorden dat jaar nota bene een zomerhit met het smakelijke "Salade tomate oignon"...

The 6th Christmas Collection

...and there's another one! A hot one. Already the sixth Christmas compilation.
Let me know which BoBW Xmas sampler, or which song, your favorite is. I'm very enchanted by "Hot Christmas" (Squirrel Nut Zippers). But I can listen to "Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis" (Tom Waits) and "Funky funky Christmas" (Electric Jungle) over and over again.
Although "Vrede" by the Dutch Ruth Jacott is not a Xmas song in the true sense, it talks about peace, just like the songs by Norah Jones ("Peace") and The Pasadenas ("Give a little peace") do.
And I can't help smiling when I hear "Frosty the snowman" by Dr. John & Leon Redbone. I don't know why but I like this version a lot.

Trans Siberian Orchestra And Other Stories

Het Trans Siberian Orchestra (vaak aangeduid als TSO) is een orkest dat progressieve rock maakt en is opgericht in 1996 in New York door Paul O'Neill, in samenwerking met Robert Kinkel en zanger Jon Oliva van de band Savatage.
O'Neill was producer van rockbands als Aerosmith, Humble Pie en Scorpions, en later begon hij met het schrijven en produceren voor Savatage. Het concept om kerstliedjes te spelen in de stijl van een rockopera werd niet goed ontvangen door de platenmaatschappijen, maar werd toch een succes.

Het Trans-Siberian Orchestra bracht zijn debuutalbum Christmas Eve And Other Stories in 1996 uit, en dat is tot nu toe ook hun bestverkochte album. Hun album The Christmas Attic uit 1998 was een gelijksoortig conceptalbum met een kerstthema. In 2000 kwam hun eerste niet-Kerstmis-album 'Beethoven's Last Night' uit, een conceptalbum over Ludwig van Beethoven's laatste nacht op aarde.
In de studio, gebruikt het Trans-Siberian Orchestra een volledig 60-koppig orkest en een koor. Tijdens de tournees bestaat de band uit 14 muzikanten, 14 zangers en twee vertellers.

Na enkele jaren op tournee te zijn geweest, gingen ze terug naar de studio om Lost Christmas Eve op te nemen.
In 2006 is er getoerd, maar werd ook nog gewerkt aan het album Night Castle, dat in 2007 uit zou komen. Het zal onder meer O Fortuna van Carl Orff's Carmina Burana bevatten. Evenals Beethoven's last night is deze CD echter ook ernstig vertraagd...

De Disko Partizani van Bucovina Club

Het is even wennen aan de duizelingwekkende snelheid en de weemoedige mineurklanken. Maar zoals de salsa begin jaren negentig westerse oren veroverde, begint nu de Oost-Europese zigeunermuziek langzaam ingeburgerd te raken.

Stefan Hantel is een gerenommeerde DJ en producer in het Duitse dance- en technowereldje. Op een bepaald moment trekt hij naar Bocuvina (sinds 1940 een deel van Roemenie en Ukraine, en geboorteplaats van zijn grootouders). Hij plundert er de muziekwinkels van Czernowitz, komt terug met een massa muzikaal materiaal, en begint daarmee te experimenteren op zijn draaitafels. Het inspireerde hem voor de naam van de feesten die hij in Duitsland organiseert: Bucovina Club. Op zijn vaste Bucovina Club-avonden draait hij onder meer eigen remixes van bekende traditionele en nieuwe Balkanbands, die hij ook op CD uitbrengt onder de naam Bucovina Club.

Shantel is ook de enthousiaste platenproducer van onder meer de Roemeense Buena Vista Social Club-nestors (Mahala Rai Banda), en dichter bij huis de Amsterdam Klezmer band. Bovendien is Shantel ook bandleider.
Hij tekende ook voor de soundtrack van Borat, met een remix van Mahala Raï Banda.

The Saxophone Colossus himself: Sonny Rollins

Theodore Walter (Sonny) Rollins (7 september 1930, New York City) is een Amerikaans jazzmuzikant en tenorsaxofonist. Sonny Rollins heeft al een lange productieve carrière in de jazz. Hij begon op zijn elfde, en speelde al voor zijn 20e samen met Thelonious Monk. Tegenwoordig toert hij nog steeds en neemt nog altijd albums op. Leeftijdgenoten en muzikanten waarmee hij opnam heeft hij overleefd: John Coltrane, Miles Davis en Art Blakey.

Hij begon als pianist, stapte over naar de altsax, en uiteindelijk koos hij voor de tenorsax in 1946. Zij eerste plaatopname was in 1949.
Rollins maakte deel uit van het Clifford Brown-Max Roach kwintet in 1955, en werd de leider nadat Brown in 1957 overleed.
Op 22 juni 1956 nam hij Saxophone Colossus op, één van zijn hoogst gewaardeerde albums. Op het album spelen ook Tommy Flanagan (piano), de Jazz Messengers (Art Blakey)-bassist Doug Watkins en drummer Max Roach. Het was pas zijn derde album als bandleider, en bevatte twee van zijn beroemdste composities (St. Thomas en Blue seven) en is waarschijnlijk zijn sterkste set.
St. Thomas, met zijn onweerstaanbare calypsomelodie, is een nummer dat iedereen wel kent. Strode rode, genoemd naar een jazzbar in Chicago, de Strode Lounge, waar Sonny tijdens zijn studententijd veel te vinden was, is lekker up-tempo en heeft twee fraaie solo's van Rollins en Flanagan. In afsluiter Blue seven komen alle muzikanten aan hun trekken met een solo, steeds afgelost door Rollins zelf.

De composities die niet van Rollins zijn, zijn You don't know what love is (een 'standard' uit 1941 (Raye/DePaul)) en Moritat (beter bekend als Theme from the Three penny opera van het beroemde Duitse musicalduo Brecht/Weill).
Mede door Rollins' herdefinitie van melodische improvisatie (waarschijnlijk het meest revolutionaire aspect aan dit album), waarbij veel verder wordt afgeweken van de themamelodie dan voorheen gangbaar, krijgen ook deze nummers een heel duidelijke Rollins-stempel opgedrukt.

Saxophone colossus is één van de meest toegankelijke mijlpalen in de jazzgeschiedenis en daarom een ideale instapper voor beginnelingen in de jazzwereld. Maar ook voor kenners blijft het één van de hoogtepunten van de jaren '50, zelfs van jazz tout court.

Cornelius came to a point...

Keigo Oyamada (27 januari 1969, Tokio, Japan,) de man achter Cornelius, wordt soms de Japanse Beck genoemd. In zijn thuisland maakte het album 'Fantasma' van hem een heuse popster, en ook in hippe kringen bij ons werd hij een cultheld...

'Fantasma' was een een zware kluif, een popplaat voor gevorderden.
Dat geldt ook voor opvolger 'Point'. Toch is 'Point' veel minder extravagant dan zijn voorganger, eeder ingetogener en sfeervoller. Het album is zeer divers en smijt je van een zacht Hawaiaans deuntje in een poel van snoeiende gitaren. Uniek zijn de natuurgeluiden - waterdruppels en vogelgezang - die Oyamada, als een eigentijdse Phil Spector, naadloos inlast tussen gitaar en zanglijnen.

Cornelius is, tussen zijn vorige CD en 'Sensuous', vader geworden. In de tussentijd schijnt hij een bijna kinderlijke elementaire energie gevonden te hebben... Met 'Sensuous' brengt hij twaalf schetsen van wat Amerikaans/Japanse pop zou moeten voorstellen. Je herkent soms een synth-lijn van Giorgo Moroder of een aanzetje tot Stevie Wonder... Maar de creativiteit van Cornelius beweegt te snel heen-en-weer, zodat je hem niet op een afgewerkte song kunt betrappen...

Sweet: a sugar hiccup by the Cocteau Twins

De Cocteau Twins is een Schotse band die actief was van 1981 tot 1997. De groep wordt opgericht door Will Heggie (bassist) en Robin Guthrie (1962, gitarist). Zij kiezen Elizabeth Fraser (1963) erbij als zangeres omdat ze zo apart danst in de lokale disco in Grangemouth, Schotland.
