The sound of 07

The sixteen tracks on this compilation are probably the ones I listened to the most this year. I made a ranking of my ten favourite CDs and added some excellent albumtracks to get to sixteen. Note, the titles in this track listing are in random order, because I can't put one CD above the other, but Roger Cicero, Joss Stone and Chaka Kahn hardly ever left my CD player...

Are these ten albums the most influental CDs of 2007? No, they're not.
Are they gonna make a mark in pop history? I doubt it.
Are they something everyone should buy? I wouldn't say that...
So why do I like these songs, and why did I put them on a compilation?
Just because they make me feel good. That's all.

You don't have to agree. You can tell me which ones are absolute rubbish to you, and which ones are missing in my list, in your opinion. I even invite you to do so, and go to the comments.

Another Christmas Collection

Xcuse me? Xtc at Xmas?

XTC is een new wave-popgroep uit Swindon (Engeland). De naam van de band werd in 1976 gekozen, nadat de twee bandleden Andy Partridge (guitars & vocals) en Colin Moulding al vanaf 1972 samen in verschillende bands hadden gespeeld.
Na een aantal valse starten, brengen ze in 1977 hun eerste plaat, "White Music", uit. Een plaat met korte puntige aanstekelijke punkpopliedjes. Naast het grote gevoel voor melodie vallen de "funny & clever" teksten van Pardridge op.
Helaas blijft het grote succes uit. En ook de tweede iets mindere plaat, "Go2" (1978) brengt daar geen verandering in.

Hun derde album, "Drums & Wires" (1979) is een keerpunt. De muziek is nu wat meer gepolijst, meer richting pop, en er staat zowaar een hit op! Het vrolijke door Moulding geschreven "Making Plans for Nigel" bereikt de hoogste regionen van de hitparades. Dit succes geeft de band meer zelfvertrouwen. en daar uit volgt "Black Sea".
Met het vijfde album "English settlement" maakt XTC opnieuw een topalbum. Het, als single uitgebrachte, "Senses working overtime" is een juweeltje...
Na het matige album "Mummer" komt de groep met "The big express" beter voor de dag. De single "All you pretty girls" kan echter geen potten breken.

Met "Skylarking" krijgt XTC voor het eerst succes in Amerika. Met "Oranges & lemons" wordt opnieuw vakwerk afgeleverd. De 10e studioplaat (Nonsuch) is weer goed. Er staan vooral op het eind van de plaat enkele prachtige melodieuze nummers op. De singles "The disappointed" en "The ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" doen echter niet veel.
Dan wordt het een hele tijd stil rond de groep...

In '98 verschijnt een album met live-opnamen (Transistor blast), maar de eerstvolgende studioplaat (Apple venus) verschijnt pas in '99. Deel 2 (Apple venus volume 2) verschijnt een jaar later... en van dan af zullen een hele reeks albums verschijnen met obscuur materiaal dat alleen voor de echte fans bedoeld is.

Christmas boots, Mashups and more

Als je in de winkelstraten loopt hoor je honderd-en-een kerstliedjes door elkaar. Om gek van te worden! Het verantwoord door elkaar halen van kerstliedjes is een vak apart. Daarvan getuigen de 'A Very Bootie Christmas'-mash up CDs...

Op zaterdag 9 December 2006 werd in San Francisco een Bootie Holiday Party gehouden.
DJ Adrian draaide een set van een uur met uitsluitend kerst-mashups, met o.a. alle nummers op de verzamel-CD van 2006. Van dat 'limited-edition' bootleg-album werden 150 exemplaren weggegeven.
De Christmas DJ set was zo'n overweldigend succes, dat de DJs Adrian en The Mysterious D besloten om het album online te zetten. En er zouden er nog meer volgen!

Attacking Massively and Collectively...

Het Engelse Bristol was het decor, waar in 1983 de groep The Wild Bunch ontstond. Ze maakten muziek die je kan vergelijken met een Jamaicaanse "Soundsystem": elektrische, ondergrondse reggae. De groep bestaat dan uit vier leden; 3D Del Naja, Mushroom Vowles, Daddy G Marshall en producer Nellee Hooper. Hooper zal later bekend worden door zijn werk voor Soul II Soul.

De overgebleven drie gaan onder een andere naam door met muziek maken, namelijk Massive Attack. De muziek van Massive Attack ondervindt invloeden uit verschillende genres gaande van triphop (acid) jazz, hiphop, elektronische muziek en rock tot reggae en klassieke muziek.
Hun eerste single, 'Any Love', kwam uit in 1987 en klinkt beduidend anders dan de rest van hun oeuvre. Hun sound werd een combinatie van Hip Hop, Dub en dancemuziek, een vorm die later Trip Hop genoemd zal worden. Kortom, je kan Massive Attack beschouwen als de grondleggers van de Trip Hop.

In 1991 kwamen ze op de proppen met "Unfinished Sympathy", een nummer dat de groep maakte van een hoop samples die ze 'toevallig nog rond de studio hadden laten slingeren'. Het werd in 1991 een nummer 1 werd.
De tweede single "Safe from harm" werd dat jaar minder succesvol. Totdat in 2002 Narcotic Thrust een wereldhit scoorde met diezelfde plaat.
Massive Attack is weliswaar daarna uit de hitlijsten verdwenen, maar de groep bleef bekendheid houden, mede door "Teardrop" (1998), en de vele remixen van grootheden als Peter Gabriel, U2, Boy George, Madonna, Björk en Everything but the Girl.

Op 24 maart 2006 verscheen een Best-of album getiteld 'Collected', met juweeltjes als 'Unfinished Sympathy', 'Teardrop' en 'Protection' en de nieuwe single 'Live With Me'. 'Collected' vormt de opmaat naar het nieuwe, vijfde groepsalbum, 'Weather Underground', dat in de eerste helft 2007 verschijnt.
Van de vier studioalbums die Massive Attack hiervoor uitbracht gingen er wereldwijd negen miljoen over de toonbank.

Momenteel wordt hun song Teardrop in een bewerkte versie gebruikt als themalied voor de tv-serie House.

Follow the trav'lin light: Queen Latifah shines

Queen Latifah (Dana Elaine Owens, 18 maart 1970, Newark, New Jersey) was ooit in de vorige eeuw een van de eerste en grootste vrouwelijk rap-sterren, maar die dagen liggen ver achter haar. Ze heeft zich sindsdien enorm ontwikkeld als zangeres en als formidabele actrice (ooit indrukwekkend in “Chicago”, en onlangs nog zeer overtuigend in ”Hairspray”).
"Trav'lin' Light" is alweer haar tweede album (na "The Dana Owens Album") waarop geen rap meer te horen is. In plaats daarvan zingt ze r&b- en jazzstandards met de grootst mogelijke kunde en authoriteit. Het zal haar vroegere publiek flink afschrikken, maar de repertoirekeuze is overtuigend en gevarieerd.

Op haar vorige album stonden een aantal erg voorspelbare en uitgekauwde covers... Op "Trav'lin' Light" zingt ze liedjes van artiesten als Nina Simone, Etta James en Roberta Flack, maar ook van Erykah Badu, Jill Scott en Stevie Wonder, die meer de sound van vandaag laten horen.
Queen Latifah zelf heeft een prachtige en krachtige stem, waarmee ze vol overgave zingt, aait en mept; en laveert tussen jazz, blues en soul. Soms glijdt ze af naar het typisch-Amerikaanse zeemzoete ballad-gezwijmel (de eerste drie nummers) maar als tegengewicht gooit ze er ook een big band tegenaan (How Long (Betcha' Got A Chick On The Side)).
En absoluut bloedstollend is haar zeer persoonlijke versie van een nummer dat al bloedstollend was in de originele versie. Ga eerst even zitten, en luister dan naar de cover van “I’m not in love”van 10CC…

Hallelujah Jeff Buckley

Jeffrey Scott Buckley (Los Angeles 17 november 1966 - Memphis 29 mei 1997) was een Amerikaans singer/songwriter en gitarist.
Buckley kwam uit een muzikale familie. Z'n vader was de singer-songwriter Tim Buckley, die een aantal folk en jazz albums uitbracht aan het eind van de 60er, begin van de 70er jaren. Jeff heeft z'n vader nauwelijks gekend.

Aan het begin van de 90er jaren verhuist Jeff naar New York. Daar leert hij Gary Lucas kennen, waarmee hij enige tijd samenwerkt. Om zijn muziek ten gehore te brengen speelt hij geregeld in kleine zalen en kroegen. Sin-é is een van zijn favoriete kroegen, waar hij geregeld in zijn eentje met zijn stem en gitaar de zaal betovert. Om de aandacht van platenmaatschappijen te trekken maakt hij tijdens een van deze memorabele optredens opnames. Deze opnames resulteren in 1994 in de uitgave van z'n eerste mini live-album Live at Sin-é. Dit album met deels eigen composities en deels covers (waaronder een Van Morrison nummer), weerspiegelt de manier waarop Jeff Buckley zijn muziek beleefde. De aandacht van de muziekindustrie was getrokken.
In hetzelfde jaar als Live at Sin-é, 1994, verschijnt Grace. Een album dat voortborduurt op het minialbum. Eigen composities aangevuld met enkele covers (o.a. van Leonard Cohen) die op geheel eigen wijze door Buckley worden vertolkt. Het wordt goed ontvangen door het publiek, maar de stijl van de muziek staat een grote doorbraak in de weg. In de twee jaar daarna toert Buckley de wereld over.
Na alle optredens volgend op het album Grace, is het in 1997 tijd geworden voor een nieuw album. Nummers die op tournee zijn geschreven worden uitgewerkt en in mei gaat hij met zijn band de studio in. De eerste opnames lopen voorspoedig, maar Buckley is nog niet geheel tevreden en last een korte pauze in.

Eind mei is het moment daar om de nummers definitief op te nemen. Buckley vliegt een dag eerder dan de rest van de band naar Memphis waar de opnames zullen plaatsvinden. 's Middags neemt hij met een vriend in de Mississippi een korte duik voordat hij naar de studio gaat. Een vriend die bij hem was verplaatst de radio die aan de rand van de rivier staat, en wanneer hij omkijkt is Jeff Buckley verdwenen.
Door een gevaarlijke onderstroom verdrinkt hij die 29ste mei. Hij werd 30 jaar oud.

A Christmas Collection

Consider it as a Christmas present: a new BoBW compilation.
I tried to look for songs that are relevant in this time of the year, without being too predictable or too sweet.
As usual one song is Dutch... done by the lovely Do ("Everyday is Christmas").
The Belgian song is a cover of the evergreen "Last Christmas". It's sung though by the incredible popular girls choir Scala (more about them here). Give it a try...
I'm particularly fond of "Christmas at my House" by Rahsaan Patterson, and "Christmas Rap" by Curtis Blow.
