Donna Summer (pseudoniem van LaDonna Adrian Gaines - Boston, 31 december 1948) is het meest bekend van haar disco-hits uit de jaren '70, die haar de bijnaam "Koningin van de disco" bezorgden.

Als kind treedt ze al op in het kerkkoor. Tijdens haar schooltijd zingt ze in een rockgroep. Donna Summer verlaat de school enkele maanden voor het afstuderen om in Duitsland te gaan zingen in de musical Hair.
Later vestigt ze zich in Europa, waar ze in verschillende musicals meezingt en zich aansluit bij de Weense Volksopera.
Nadat ze in München is gaan wonen, trouwt Donna met Helmut Sommer. In deze periode neemt ze haar artiestennaam Donna "Summer" aan.

In 1971 komt ze met haar eerste solosingle, maar haar eerste grote internationale hit scoort ze in 1974 met 'The Hostage'.
Haar eerste album uit 1975 wordt een matig succes.
Donna Summer brengt de volgende jaren meerdere singles uit. Ze is een van de weinige disco-artiesten die ook veel aandacht aan LP's besteedt.
Met het nummer 'State of Independence' scoort ze in 1982 een nummer 1-hit. Daarna neemt het succes af, tot ze eind jaren '80 gaat samenwerken met Stock, Aitken & Waterman en weer scoort met 'This Time I Know It's For Real'...

Inspyring: Spyro Gyra

Al vanaf de oprichting in 1974 door saxofonist Jay Beckenstein specialiseert Spyro Gyra zich in popjazz die vaak zwaar overhelt naar fusion. Voor sommigen is deze sound veel te glad, anderen zweren bij de virtuositeit en de strakke overgangen.

The Cole-ection

Natalie Cole (6 februari 1950) is een Amerikaans jazz-zangeres en actrice, ze is de dochter van Nat King Cole. Ze maakt haar zangdebuut al op haar zesde: ze zingt mee op haar vader's Kerstalbum. Vader "Nat" is verbaasd over zijn dochter's talent, en zorgt ervoor dat ze verder kan optreden.

Wanneer Nathalie vijftien is, sterft haar vader aan longkanker. Na zijn dood verhuist het gezin. Nathalie luistert naar Rock en Roll muziek, en zit op de Universiteit. Toch blijft zingen haar passie en ze raakt betrokken bij een band, die zowel Jazz als Rock en Roll spelen.
In 1975 komt haar eerste album "Inseperable" uit, waarmee ze twee Grammy Awards wint.
In 1976 komt de opvolger "Nathalie" uit. Ook voor dit album krijgt ze een Grammy.
Na dit album volgen in rap tempo nog: "Unpredictable", "Thankful", "Nathalie...Live" en "I Love you so".
In 1979 krijgt ze haar eigen ster op de Hollywood "Walk of fame"!

Nadat Nathalie het album "We're The best Of Friends" heeft gemaakt, raakt ze verslaafd aan drugs en alcohol. Toch maakt ze nog: "Don't look back", "Happy Love" en "I'm Ready".
In 1983 laat Nathalie zich opnemen in een afkickkliniek. Alles lijkt beter te gaan totdat haar man Marvin Yancy in 1985 sterft aan een hartaanval. Toch gaat Nathalie door met muziekmaken.
In 1985 komt "Dangerous" uit, gevolgd door "Everlasting" (1987) en "Good to be back" (1989).
Haar best-verkopende album maakt ze in 1991: "Unforgettable...With Love". Door middel van moderne techniek zingt ze zelfs een duet met haar overleden vader!
Haar album "Take a Look" (1993) is niet zo succesvol als de voorgaande.
In 1994 brengt Nathalie een kerstalbum uit, genaamd "Holly and Ivy". Op haar album "Stardust"(1996) zingt Nathalie weer een duet met haar vader. In datzelfde jaar brengt Nathalie tweede kerstalbum uit en in 1999 verschijnt haar album "Snowfall on the Sahara", gevolg door haar derde kerstalbum.
Na al dit succes besluit Nathalie in 2000 een Greatest Hits-album uit te brengen.

Af en toe brengt ze, ondanks haar indrukwekkende stem, behoorlijke schmalz, maar voor haar "This Will Be" mag je me (bij manier van spreken!) 's nachts wakker maken...

Best of ...Both Worlds: Robert Palmer

Deze week stond ik in de Free Record Shop en vond de CD "At his very Best" in de bakken. De actie "3 CDs voor 25 euro" bracht mij weer in herinnering waar de naam van deze blog vandaan komt...
(De twee andere CDs die ik kocht, waren de driedubbele "Munich concert" van Miles Davis en "The Soul sessions" van Joss Stone. Maar nu even aandacht voor het beste van Robert Palmer...)

Robert Palmer (1949 - Parijs, 2003) was een Brits popmusicus. In de jaren '60 maakte hij deel uit van de groepen Alan Brown Set en Dada, dat later omgedoopt werd tot Vinegar Joe.

Sinds 1974 was hij als soloartiest actief, en scoorde hij zijn eerste hit met Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley. Bij ons scoort Palmer in 1978 zijn eerste hit met Best of Both Worlds.
Begin jaren '80 haalden zijn songs Johnny And Mary en Looking for Clues de hitparades, maar Addicted to Love en Bad Case of Loving You zijn z'n grote hits.
Met de gelegenheidsband The Power Station, die hij in 1985 oprichtte met John Taylor en Andy Taylor van Duran Duran, scoorde hij de hits Some Like It Hot en Get It On.

Palmer woonde in Zwitserland en stierf aan een hartaanval tijdens een verblijf in Parijs.

Sensational: Alex Harvey!

Noem het blues, noem het rock... maar noem het in ieder geval entertainment. Wat de Schotse rockgroep "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band" deed in de jaren zeventig was het uitzetten van de krijtlijnen voor een hele generatie poseurs en performers in de glamrockperiode.

Harvey en zijn band coverden jazzklassiekers, musicalssongs en croonermelodie‘n zoals Klaus Nomi dat later zou doen; hij verfde zijn gezicht clownesk zoals Kiss, en hij trok de gekste outfits aan, zoals The Sweet of Elton John.
En de muziek stond als een huis. Er werd geragd en gebeukt en gegild en geroepen maar steeds weer stak de lol-aan-het-muziekmaken er bovenuit. Lawaaierig, schreeuwerig maar vooral passioneel en met een flinke dosis humor

Als je Alex Harvey niet kent, ga luisteren naar deze wat onderschatte entertainer, die iedereen regelmatig op een verkeerd been zet.
Op 4 februari 1982 overleed de Engelse zanger in het Belgische Zeebrugge.
