Thus Spoke Deodato
Eumir Deodato (21 juni 1942, Rio de Janeiro, Brazilië) is een van de meest prominente fusion-jazz-musici. Zijn meest succesvolle project stamt uit 1972: hij schreef toen het arrangement van 'Thus Spoke Zarazustra', de themasong van Stanley Kubricks '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
Als kind leerde Eumir Deodato zichzelf keyboard spelen in allerlei popbandjes. Later werkte hij als sessiemuzikant (keyboards, bas, gitaar) om vervolgens muziek te maken onder zijn eigen naam. Zijn eerste echte succes in Brazilië kwam met de begeleiding van
Astrud Gilberto .
In 1967 emigreerde hij naar de VS waar zijn carriere als arrangeur begon. Eerst schreef hij vooral arrangementen voor Braziliaanse artiesten die in de VS woonden. Later ook voor Amerikaanse artiesten als Frank Sinatra en
Roberta Flack, en voor jaren 80-bands als
Kool & the Gang. In de jaren negentig werkte hij o.a. met zangeres
Björk.
Eigen albums zijn o.a. 'First Cuckoo', 'Whirlwinds', 'Very Together', 'Whistle Bump' en 'Night Cruiser'.
Deodato maakte als componist, arrangeur, producer en muzikant deel uit van meer dan 500 albums, waarvan er zeker 15 platinum werden.

The silk & soul of Lou Rawls
Louis Allen Rawls (Chicago, 1 december 1933 - Los Angeles, 6 januari 2006) was een Amerikaanse soulzanger.
In zijn schooltijd was hij al bevriend met de soulzanger Sam Cooke, met wie in de jaren '50 in een gospelkoor: Teenage Kings of Harmony zong. Na zijn militaire dienst ging Rawls zingen bij de groep Pilgrim Travelers. Tijdens zijn tournee kreeg hij in 1958 een ernstig auto-ongeluk. Hij lag hierna 5 1/2 dag in coma.
In 1962 kreeg hij een contract bij de platenmaatschappij Capitol Records. Zijn eerst R&B-nummer: "Love Is a Hurtin' Thing" verscheen in 1966 op zijn album "Soulin'". Een jaar later kreeg hij zijn eerste Grammy voor zijn single "Dead End Street". Hij zou in zijn muzikale carriere uiteindelijk drie Grammy's behalen.
In 1976 brak hij wereldwijd door met het album "All Things in Time" waarop het nummer "You«ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" staat. In 1977 had hij nog een grote hit met "Lady Love" uit zijn album "When You've Heard Lou, You've Heard It All".
Naast het zingen, verscheen hij ook als acteur in een aantal speelfilms, zoals Leaving Las Vegas, Blues Brothers 2000 en Baywatch Nights.
In december 2005 werd bekend, dat Rawls aan longkanker en aan een hersentumor leed. Hij overleed op 6 januari 2006 in het ziekenhuis van Los Angeles op 72-jarige leeftijd.

Pro and improv: Keith Jarrett
De Amerikaanse pianist Keith Jarrett (Allentown, 8 mei 1945) begon op 3-jarige leeftijd piano te spelen. Gedurende zijn jeugd werd Jarrett onderwezen in klassieke muziek. In zijn tienerjaren kreeg hij de mogelijkheid compositie te studeren bij de vermaarde docente Nadia Boulanger, maar Jarrett verkoos om naar New York te verhuizen om daar jazzmuziek te spelen.
In New York speelde hij veelal in de beroemde jazzclub Village Vanguard, waarna hij begon te toeren met Art Blakey's The Jazz Messengers. Tussen 1966 en 1968 was Jarrett pianist in de Charles Lloyd kwartet, een van de populairste jazzbands uit de jaren '60. In deze periode begon Jarrett zijn eigen trio met bassist Charlie Haden en drummer Paul Motian. Nadat de Charles Lloyd kwartet ophield te bestaan ging Jarrett naar de fusiongroep van Miles Davis, met wie hij als elektrisch pianist en organist albums opnam.
Vanaf 1971 heeft Jarrett zich tot veelzijdig solopianist ontwikkeld. Zijn live-improvisaties tijdens soloconcerten maakten van hem een van de best verkopende jazzartiesten in de geschiedenis.
Jarrett is een fenomeen. Hij heeft meer dan honderd platen gemaakt. Als hij jazz speelt, gaat hij altijd zonder plan het podium op. Ter plekke ontstaat het concert. Dat heeft van Keith Jarrett zo veel gevergd, dat zijn gezondheid er onder te leiden heeft gehad. Hij kon op een gegeven moment geen noot meer spelen, omdat hij aan chronische vermoeidheid leed.
Keith Jarrett geeft zich altijd alleen maar helemaal."The Köln Concert" van Keith Jarrett is een live-registratie van een piano-improvisatie, opgenomen in Keulen op 24 januari 1975. Op dit album hoor je Jarret ook kreunen en hijgen van de fysieke inspanning.
Ruim een uur worstelt Jarrett zich door enkelsdiepe lagen noten, en bij tijd en wijle schudt hij juweeltjes van melodietjes of ritmes uit zijn mouw.
Jarrett zelf zegt daarover:
"Ever since the release of "The Köln Concert" recording, I have been asked by pianists, students, musicologists, and others, to publish this music so others can play it. I have steadfastly resisted because this was a totally improvised concert on a certain night and should go as quickly as it comes..."

Altered Yellowjackets
De rhythm & bluesformatie The Yellowjackets werd in 1977 opgericht door gitarist Robben Ford, die de eerste jaren tevens de gezichtsbepalende figuur was.
Na zijn vertrek in 1983 werd hij opgevolgd door altsaxofonist Marc Russo, waarna de hoogtijperiode van de groep begon. Met o.a. bassist Jimmy Haslip en drummer William Kennedy wist de groep een geheel eigen draai aan rhythm & blues te geven.
Na het vertrek van Russo in de jaren negentig en met de komst van tenorsaxofonist en klarinettist Bob Mintzer ging de muzikale richting meer en meer de richting van jazz op. Dat kostte de band fans, maar leverde ze ook nieuwe op. The Yellowjackets blijven zich ook in 21 ste eeuw steeds ontwikkelen.
The Yellowjackets zijn uitgegroeid tot een bekend fenomeen in de jazz/fusion scene. Met albums als Samurai, Four Corners, Cloudjacketspolitics, Like A River, hebben ze menig jazz liefhebber over de streep gekregen.
De sterke vercommercialisering van het genre waar Yellowjackets een van de aanvoerders van was, is de oorzaak van de recente breuk met hun platenmaatschappij.
Om het hoofd te bieden aan o.a. internet, zijn onder druk van de platenmaatschappijen vooral in de VS hele hordes zogenaamde SoftJazz radio stations uit de grond gestampt. Voor deze razend populaire zenders eisen de maatschappijen een soort 'Fuzak'.
Yellowjackets vertikte het om mee te gaan in deze draaimolen en wil gewoon hun eigen muziek blijven maken.

Met scat-improvisaties in haar moedertaal neemt de Azerbeidjaanse pianiste/zangeres Aziza Mustafa Zadeh een wel heel bijzondere plaats in. Haar muziek is een mengeling van jazz, klassiek en folkmuziek.
Ze is de dochter van Vagif Mustafa Zadeh, een jazzcomponist en pianist, aan wie ze veel van haar werk opdraagt. Haar moeder is ook zangeres en bovendien haar manager.
Zadeh, die tegenwoordig in Duitsland woont, heeft inmiddels al veel CD’s uitgebracht, waarop ze samenspeelt met artiesten als Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Al Di Meola, Bill Evans en Stanley Clarke...

Eumir Deodato (21 juni 1942, Rio de Janeiro, Brazilië) is een van de meest prominente fusion-jazz-musici. Zijn meest succesvolle project stamt uit 1972: hij schreef toen het arrangement van 'Thus Spoke Zarazustra', de themasong van Stanley Kubricks '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
