Just another trip around the world. Care to join me?
Off course we start in the Belgium/Holland area, with the Dutch dialect group Twarres and the underrated Belgian singer Wigbert van Lierde. But we go north where we meet Emiliana Torrini. The way back south goes through Eastern Europa with Mahala Rai Banda and InCulto and heads to the Mediterranean Sea, where we visit Greece and Cyprus, Further on we go to Turkey and Egypt. And that's just the Western world...
Equally interesting to discover is Senegal (with Touré Kunda) , North America (Joe 'King' Carrasco) and Canada (Bombay Talkie)... For now.

Pimp my ride: The Cars
The Cars was een Amerikaanse rockband die eind jaren 70 en de jaren 80 een aantal hits scoorde. Een van hun bekendste nummers is 'Drive' uit 1984.
In 1978 komen The Cars in de VS voor het eerst op
coast-to-coast-radio en in 1979 is het eerste album nummer 4 op de jaarlijst bij de beste lp's. Er worden wereldwijd 1 miljoen exemplaren verkocht, en "My Best Friend's Girl" is de grote hit. Bij ons wordt de plaat in 1979 maar een bescheiden succesje,
Drive, de singlehit in 1985, kwam uit in 1982, en werd toen maar een klein hitje. Hun vrolijke plaat You Might Think haalt eind mei 1984 niet eens meer de hitlijsten. In 1987 verschijnt hun laatste studioalbum Door to Door. In 1999 komt er een
deluxe-versie uit van The Cars, en in 2002 verschijnt The Best Of The Cars.
Maar The Cars beginnen nu, na 23 jaar, met een nieuw album. De band heeft al een aantal nummers opgenomen in New York. Naar verluidt komt er ook een nieuw tour om de CD te promoten. The Cars, kwam begin dit jaar weer bij elkaar en bestaan nog altijd uit vier van de originele leden. Op de Facebookpagina van de band is al een klein voorproefje van het nieuwe werk te vinden...

The Price of Les Rythmes Digitales
Les Rythmes Digitales is een alias van de Brit Stuart David Price (Paris, 9 september 1977), die ook wel eens de namen Jacques Lu Cont en Thin White Duke gebruikt.
Zijn album ‘Darkdancer’ (1999) combineerde elementen uit de house, electro, disco en synthpop, en werd in 2005 opnieuw uitgebracht, na het succes van de track Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat) in een tv-commercial van de Citroën C4.
Naast het project Les Rythmes Digitales, vormde Price ook de electro-pop band Zoot Woman, en hij schreef mee en produceerde ook Madonna’s album Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). Verder werkte hij ook met Missy Elliot, Depeche Mode, Röyksopp, The Killers en Coldplay.
Eind 2008 produceerde Price albums voor Keane en The Killers, en ook de laatste van de Scissor Sisters nam hij onder handen.

DJ Jazzy Jeff is the DJ, the Fresh Prince is the rapper
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince was een raptrio bestaande uit Jeffrey A. Townes (DJ Jazzy Jeff), Will Smith (The Fresh Prince) en Ready Rock C.. De laatstgenoemde stapte in 1990 uit het trio. Ze waren actief tussen 1985-1994 en sinds 2006 zijn ze terug. Bij ons zijn ze vooral bekend vanwege Yo home to Bel-Air, de themasong van sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Hun debuutsingle was Girls Aint Nothing But Trouble, uit 1985. Ze kregen hits met Parents Just Don't Understand en I Wanna Rock, maar hun grootste hit was nog The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air theme, het startnummer van de sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, waarin Will Smith het gelijknamige persoon vertolktez.
Toen de show in 1990 begon, stapte Ready Rock C. (Clarence Holmes) uit het trio, waar hij eigenlijk nooit een grote rol in had gespeeld. In 1997 spande hij een rechtszaak tegen Will Smith en Jeffrey A. Townes aan.
In 1994 ging Will Smith solo verder, ook al veranderde er weinig aangezien DJ Jazzy Jeff de DJ bleef. In 2006 gingen ze weer onder hun huidige naam verder. In de tussentijd had Smith hits gehad als Men In Black, Gettin' Jiggy Wit It en Wild Wild West.

Eyes of a Spanish Witch
Het Spaanse achtkoppige collectief Ojos de Brujo (Ogen van de Heks) maakt muziek met sterke flamenco- en hiphopinvloeden. De muzikanten noemen hun muziek zelf "Jip Jop Flamenkillo". Maar ook punkrock heeft hun stijl beïnvloed.
De groep werd opgericht in 1996 en heeft de stad Barcelona als thuisbasis, van waaruit ze naar veel muziekfestivals reizen.
Ojos de Brujo neemt in 1999 het debuutalbum Vengue op en het album verschijnt in 2000. Na het uitkomen van hun tweede album Bari (2002) gaan de Spanjaarden op tournee. Hierdoor komen de bandleden in aanraking met vele andere wereldartiesten: van de Senegalese groep Daara J, de Cubaanse pianist Roberto Carcasses, tot de hypnotiserende Nitin Sawhney uit Groot-Brittannië. Door deze ontmoetingen doet de band veel muzikale inspiratie op en brengt in 2006 hun derde album Techari uit.
Ojos De Brujo blijven op hun eigen unieke manier de uitvinders van de flamencohiphop, de leiders van de Barcelonese mestizoscene... De band werkt ook samen met veel verschillende artiesten (graffiti, multimedia, ontwerpers, filmers).

Me First, and The Gimme Gimmes, and then you!
"Me First And The Gimme Gimmes" is een allegaartje van leden uit "NoFX","Lagwagon" en "No Use For A Name".
Dit stelletje ongeregeld brengt nu al vijf CD's lang covers van hele bekende nummers. De ene keer zijn dat Musical-songs, een andere keer country of soul-klassiekers, maar iedere keer met een vette knipoog. Een héééle vette knipoog!
Deze muziek zit al maanden lang in de CD-speler van mijn auto. Het maakt het rijden er alleen maar leuker op. Al krijg ik wel schuine blikken als ik aan een stoplicht sta... ;-)

The 61st BoBW jazz funk compilation
When I started making this kind of comps I decided always to include a Belgian song and a Dutch one. Berget Lewis has probably one of the best voices of Holland, but she never managed to break through to a bigger audience.
The Belgian track is what I consider to be the best song ever made in Belgium (some Belgians will immediately declare me insane right now, I guess). It's got a wonderfull and haunting melody, a distinct and strong voice and very sarcastic lyrics.

Ann Christy could've become an international hit if it had been promoted in the right way, because there is a ressemblance with Cilla black or even Dusty Springfield.

Donna was their name...
The Donnas waren jarenlang een goed bewaard geheim op het kleine platenlabel Epitaph. Hoewel de dames als simpel punkbandje begonnen, zijn ze langzaam maar zeker meer de recht-toe-recht-aan-rock van AC/DC, The Hellacopters en Motorhead gaan spelen. Je zou The Donnas gemakshalve als Ramones met borsten kunnen omschrijven, dezelfde energieke en pretentieloze attitude, maar muzikaal leunen ze dichter aan bij The New York Dolls, en lijken ze op de rebelse, onhandelbare dochters uit een huwelijk van Cheap Trick met The Runaways.
The Donnas
waren dus een leuk, fris damesbandje dat het lekkere punkrock-album The Donnas Turn 21 (met daarop de onvergetelijke zinsnede
`I'm sitting alone in my room, with nothing to do but drink my Oranjeboom') uitbrachten.
Maar toen kwam het grote Warner om de hoek kijken, en de dames waren verkocht. Letterlijk. Een groter budget, een grotere studio, een grotere naam achter de knoppen (Jason Carmer, werkte met Live, Run DMC) naast Donnas-getrouwe Robert Shimp.
En dat heeft The Donnas met de single 'Take It Off' aardig wat
airplay opgeleverd. Echt veel veranderd is er op dit album in vergelijking met voorganger 'Turn 21' niet. Het is nog steeds erg moeilijk stil te blijven zitten op de stevige meidenrock.
Op 'Spend the Night' staan veertien variaties op één oersimpel thema, de korte krachtige rocksong, het verstand op nul, de blik op oneindig - maar laat dat je niet tegenhouden om luidkeels mee te zingen met 'Take It Off', 'Who Invited You', 'Take Me to the Backseat'
Andermaal een lekker stevige rockplaat, die echter hoofdzakelijk voor de Amerikaanse markt bedoeld was. Het geluid is in tegenstelling tot 'Turn 21' ver-Amerikaansd, groter, ruimtelijker...
Richie Valens zong het al:
I had a girl, Donna was her name, Since she left me, I've never been the same. Tja, dat kan natuurlijk... Kleine meisjes worden groot, en dan willen ze nog wel eens de wijde wereld intrekken...

One of the Complete Compilations by C-Mon & Kypski
C-mon & Kypski is een Nederlandse band uit Utrecht. De band bestaat uit vier leden: Thomas Elbers alias Kypski (diskjockey, producent), Simon Akkermans alias C-Mon (dj, producent), Daniel Rose ((bas)gitaar) en Jori Collignon (toetsenist).
C-Mon & Kypski heeft tournees gehad in Europa, Noord-Amerika en Zuid-Afrika, en heeft vier albums uitgebracht. Werd er eerst voornamelijk geëxperimenteerd met hiphop en electronica, op latere albums is een meer eclectisch geluid te horen. C-Mon & Kypski maakt genre-overschrijdende muziek. Esquire magazine (USA) omschreef het als “The hot shit in Europe right now.”
Zo gebruikte de band in het verleden turntables en gitaren, synthesizers, vreemde samples, jazzmusici, rappers en een Klezmer-band. Ook mixten ze flamenco en dubstep door hun muziek.
Op The Complete Jazz Compilation zijn alle jazzy tracks van de eerste drie albums verzameld, aangevuld met een tweetal nieuwe nummers en twee nummers afkomstigs van C-Mon’s soloplaat ‘Cereal’. De nummers zijn voorzien van een, zoals het in 'Giants of Jazz' wordt genoemd, 'jazz club atmosphere'. Lome trompetten, relaxte piano en jazz brushes zorgen voor een bijzonder sfeertje. Talento de Barrio Daddy Yankee en Directo
De Puertoricaanse zanger Raymond Ayala, bekend onder de artiestennaam Daddy Yankee (3 februari 1977 te Rio Piedras) zong al vanaf zijn vroege tienerjaren en zoals zovele rapartiesten gebruikte hij sociale vraagstukken in zijn teksten. Hij behoort tot de grondleggers van de moderne reggaeton en is zeer populair in Latijns-Amerika.
In Europa is hij een nieuw verschijnsel, maar het blijft wachten op de grote doorbraak.
Zijn professionele carriere begon met zingen samen met de bekende Dj Playero, waardoor hij bekend raakte in Puerto Rico.
Hij nam in 1998 het nummer Posicion op met Alberto Style, dat verscheen in de soundtrack van de film "One Tough Cop". Een ander nummer van hem verscheen op het "Piece Maker" album geproduceerd door Tony Touch in 2000.
Raymond's eerste album was "El cartel", dat de platinum status behaalde. Het werd in 2001 gevolgd door "El cartel II" dat eveneens platina werd.
In 2002 bracht Daddy Yankee "El cangri.com" uit, waarop onder andere een duet stond met Lito: El gran robo. Hij verdiende de titel "King of Improvization" door vijf jaar achtereen de Street Jam Regaae Award te winnen.

She, herself and her: Joan Armatrading
Het repertoire van de Britse zangeres,
songwriter en gitariste Joan Armatrading (Basseterre (Saint Kitts), 9 december 1950) is niet onder één noemer te plaatsen; haar muziek omvatte aanvankelijk elementen uit de rock, rhythm-and-blues en folk, en later ook uit de jazz en reggae.
Armatrading groeide op in Birmingham, Engeland en bracht in 1972 haar eerste album uit (Whatever's for us). In 1980 had ze in Nederland een Top 40-notering met Rosie. In Vlaanderen had ze in 1981 een kleine hit met het nummer I'm lucky van het album Walk Under Ladders.
In 2008 werkten zij en andere bekende artiesten aan het album Songs for Tibet, een steunbetuiging aan Tibet en dalai lama Tenzin Gyatso. Songs for Tibet verscheen daags voor de opening van de Olympische Zomerspelen 2008, die in de Volksrepubliek China werden gehouden.

One way or another: Nujabes
Jun Seba is een Japanse hiphop-producer en DJ, maar hij componeert en arrangeert onder zijn
nom de plume Nujabes (een anagram van zijn echte naam).
Hij is bovendien lid van het productioe-duo "Urbanforest", een experimentele tandem met Nao Tokui.
Tot nu toe heeft hij twee albums uit: Metaphorical Music (2003) en Modal Soul (2005). Metaphorical Music verkocht in 2004 meer dan 20.000 exemplaren, een ongekend succes voor een independent release.
Naast zijn muzikale bezigheden, is hij ook nog eigenaar van "T Records" en "Guinness Records" (allebei platenzaken in Shibuya, Tokio), en hij runt ook Hyde Out Productions.
Zijn muziek wordt gekenmerkt door sterke
cool jazz- en soul-invloeden, en dat zijn vaak samples van artiesten als Miles Davis, Pat Metheny en Yusef Lateef. Dat resulteert dan in gloedvolle, warme en zwoele tracks. soms romantisch, soms een beetje
weird.
Nujabes speelt vrijwel nooit live, en verschijnt maar zelden in de media. Wat zijn enigmatisch charisma alleen maar groter maakt...

Bloed, tranen en zweet: Bonnie Raitt
Bonnie Raitt (Burbank (Californië), 8 november 1949) is een Amerikaanse zangeres, liedjesschrijfster en gitariste.
Ze is de dochter van Broadway musicalster John Raitt. Ze begon gitaar te spelen toen ze twaalf was. Na de middelbare school begon ze in Rhythm and Bluesclubs te spelen.
In 1983 verbrak Warner Bros. Records het contract, onder andere vanwege alcohol- en drugsgebruik, maar zij verdween allerminst uit de muziekscene. Na meer dan 20 jaar opnames en optredens, bereikte Raitt succes met haar tiende album. "Nick of Time" kwam in de top te staan in de Verenigde Staten en won drie Grammy Awards. Voor ze begon aan Nick of Time had Raitt de interesse van verschillende grote platenlabels. Rond deze tijd ontmoette ze producer Don Was, via Hal Wilner, die werkte aan een album voor Disney. Beiden wilden graag dat Raitt een volwassen versie van "Baby Mine" zou zingen, een lied uit de film Dumbo. Raitt was tevreden over de opnames, en ze vroeg Was haar nieuwe album te produceren.
Tegelijk kreeg ze een vierde Grammy voor haar duet "In the Mood" met John Lee Hooker op zijn album "The Healer".
Hierna kreeg in ze 1993 nog drie Grammy Awards voor haar album "Luck of the Draw", waarna ze in 1994 nog twee Grammy's kreeg voor haar album "Longing in Their Hearts".
Raitt trouwde in 1991 met acteur Michael O'Keefe, maar dit huwelijk kwam in 2000 ten einde.

The Heart of The Congomen
Al sinds de jaren ’70 hebben de Congos hun stempel gedrukt op de rootsreggae. Het bekendste album van de groep is ‘Heart of the Congos, dat ze opnamen met Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry
Eén van de weinige overlevenden van de Marley-generatie zijn The Congos. In het magische muziekjaar 1977 zongen en speelden The Congos zichzelf de onsterfelijkheid in met ‘Heart Of The Congos’, één van de alerbeste reggae-albums ooit en een wereldklassieker tout court. Dat album werd destijds ingeblikt in de Black Ark Studio van Lee “Scratch” Perry. Spirituële reggae met samenzang op het hoogste niveau. Het album wordt door sommigen zelfs beschouwd als het beste dat ooit is voortgekomen uit Perrys mythische Black Ark Studio.
Sinds 2006 touren de reggaeveteranen (na 15 jaar) weer in hun originele bezetting waaronder de legendarische Cedric Myton en Roy 'Ashanti' Johnson, en met succes. Ondanks dat hun dreadlocks grijs zijn geworden, blijven ze nog altijd knap grooven!

The Herbalizer: Same as it never was
The Herbaliser is een in de jaren '90 opgerichte Engelse tweemansformatie bestaande uit
Jake Werry en
Ollie Teeba. De groep heeft geen hits gehad bij ons, maar ze hebben verschillende albums uitgebracht, waaronder Blow your headphones (1998), en Take London (2005).
De stijl wordt vooral gezien als een mengeling van
old school hiphop gemixt met triphop en
drum and bass, en met smaakvolle uitstappen naar de jazz en de funk. Het geheel groovet aardig en is ritmischer en melodieuser dan veel andere triphop op het Ninja Tune-label. de groep neigt op het gebied van
coolness een beetje naar de Stereo MC's.
The Herbaliser maakt veel gebruik van gast-rappers en werkt samen met onder andere de Amerikaanse rapster Jean Grae (die zichzelf vroeger "What? What?" noemde), maar ook met mannelijke rappers onder wie de Brit Roots Manuva.
