    Alle softjazz-fans verzamelen: 2 Wouter Hamelen

    Wouter Hamel (Den Haag, 19 mei 1977) is een Nederlands jazz-zanger. Zijn stijl wordt vergeleken met die van Jamie Cullum en Harry Connick, Jr.
    Hamel studeerde aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Na het winnen van het Nederlands Jazz Vocalisten Concours kreeg hij veel aandacht van de media. Sindsdien heeft hij diverse optredens gedaan in verschillende radio- en tv-programma's (o.a. Mooi! Weer de Leeuw, De wereld draait door en Pauw & Witteman). Ook trad hij op op het North Sea Jazz Festival.

    Op zijn met goud bekroonde debuut "Hamel" worden tamelijk voorspelbare teksten over de liefde gekoppeld aan open melodieën met warme arrangementen. Hamel beperkt zich tot eigen werk, dat dan weer wel. Bonuspunten zijn er voor producer Benny (Sings). Die legt niet alleen een mooi heldere productie neer met inderdaad de nodige hints naar popmuziek, maar speelt ook flink met de vaste jazzpatronen.

    ...en het gaat steeds harder met Wouter Hamel.
    Eigenlijk ongelooflijk voor een Nederlandse artiest en vooral ook omdat Wouter Hamel niet zozeer binnen de gemakzuchtige pop valt die doorgaans te zien en te horen is. Daar zijn, zijn composities te scherp, eigenzinnig en zijn stem te jazzy en soulful voor.
    De ene trofee na de andere heeft hij al binnengesleept. Zijn tweede CD Nobody's Tune is al even aanstekelijk als zijn debuut van anderhalf jaar geleden. Jazz uit het hart en pop uit de poriën.
    Hamel maakt als songschrijver een grote groei door. Met het prachtige titelnummer of een song als ‘Quite The Disguise’ als prima voorbeelden. 'When Morning Comes' doet sterk denken aan het werk van Burt Bacharach. 'Once in a Lifetime' zou een sterke inzending voor het songfestival zijn. 'Sir Henry' is een melig reggaedeuntje.En met een herkenbare openingstrack als ‘One More Time On The Merry-go-round’ zit het ook qua hits gebakken.
    'Nobody's Tune' is een meeslepend album dat net als het succesvolle debuutalbum geproduceerd is door Benny Sings.

    You've been spiked by Chris Joss

    De Fransman Chris Joss heeft een grote voorliefde voor blaxploitation, jaren zestig spy themes, Hammond orgels, psychedelica, jazz en easy listening. Dat bleek jarenlang toen hij nog DJ was in Parijs en Londen...

    In 2002 ging hij dus met zijn debuut-CD "Dr. Rhythm" helemaal die kant op, maar met "You've Been Spiked" (2004)  is hij er nog iets dieper in gedoken. En hij mag hij zichzelf een autodidact maar ook een ware multi-instrumentalist noemen want hij speelt onder andere bas, gitaar, drums, toetsen, percussie, sitar, tabla's, fluit en trompet. Alleen de vocalen heeft hij hier en daar uitbesteed aan Cosmika en The French Suffragette Squad Choir.
    "You've Been Spiked" heeft alle muziek om er een film bij te verzinnen: een obligaat love theme, sferen voor een obscure kofferbaktransactie waarbij alles draait om een koffertje met "onbekende" inhoud, meerdere achtervolgingens, en nog veel meer spannende momenten...

    Peep Toot Boing Wham Ping Bam: Spike Jones!

    Lindley Armstrong "Spike" Jones (14 december 1911 - 1 mei 1965) begon zijn muzikale carrière als sessiedrummer voor verschillende Amerikaanse orkesten. Hij was een tijdlang de drummer in het orkest van Bing Crosby (hij is te horen op "White Christmas"!).

    Met de eerste versie van Spike Jones and his City Slickers scoorde hij in 1942 meteen een gigantische hit met de anti-Hitler song : "Der Fuehrer’s face". Het toen achtkoppige orkest bestond uit zorgvuldig uitgezochte topmusici, die toen ook stuk voor stuk een uitzonderlijke komische flair hadden.
    In het lange bestaan van de City Slickers was het een komen en gaan van musici en entertainers, met als enige constante Spike’s onovertroffen neus voor visuele en muzikale waanzin. De vroege City Slickers specialiseerden zich in parodieen en persiflages op populaire evergreens en dit door gebruik te maken van allerlei bizarre kostumeringen, instrumenten en arrangementen. Naar het einde van de jaren 4O toe dwong het gigantische succes van de Spike Jones Revue hen tot het engageren van goochelaars, illusionisten, stand-up comedians, bevallige choristes en zelfs trapezisten. Dat had tot gevolg dat steeds meer mensen de show wilden zien. En er werd altijd op topniveau gemusiceerd, maar dat kwam door de ijzeren hand waarmee Jones zijn medewerkers dirigeerde!
    Het was dan ook onvermijdelijk dat Spike Jones and The City Slickers in verschillende films figureerden. De komst van de tv bracht nieuwe impulsen en een nieuwe inspiratie. De Spike Jones Tv-shows hielden in het midden van de jaren ‘5O dan ook heel Amerika aan de buis gekluisterd.

    Aan het einde van zijn carrière maakte Jones nog enkele platen maar helaas zat niemand zat nog te wachten op een melige versie van sixties-hits. Spike Jones stierf aan een longemfyseem op 1 mei 1965.

    Noa now and then

    Noa (in 1969 in Tel Aviv geboren als Achinoam Nini) is een van Israëls meest populaire artiesten. Haar carriere start als zij begin jaren negentig haar muzikale partner, gitarist Gil Dor, ontmoet. Noa's voorkeur voor songwriters als Paul Simon, Joni Mitchel en Leonard Cohen, gecombineerd met haar Jemense achtergrond zorgt samen met de klassieke, jazz en rock achtergrond van Gil Dor voor een uniek geluid.
    De ontmoeting in 2003 met het Napolitaanse Solis String Quartet betekent een nieuwe dimensie in haar muziek.

    Inmiddels heeft Noa, die ook percussie, gitaar en piano speelt, een aantal Israëlische en internationale studio-albums op haar naam staan. Vier jaar geleden verscheen de cd en dvd "Live in Israël april 28, 2005" waarop naast Noa, Dor en de vaste percussionist Zohar Fresco ook het Solis String Quartet te horen is.

    The message is... Al Green

    Al Green (Forrest City, Arkansas, 13 april 1946) is een Amerikaans gospel- en soulzanger en dominee. Het is een van de populairste soulzangers aller tijden, die zijn grootste successen heeft behaald in het begin van de jaren zeventig.

    Samen met zijn vrienden Palmer James en Curtis Rogers richt hij op de middelbare school Al Green & the Creations op. Hun eerste single "Back Up Train" is een grote hit, maar de  daaropvolgende singles worden geen succes.
    Na veel optredens in nachtclubs wordt Green in 1969 ontdekt door bandleider en producer Willie Mitchell, en hij neemt zijn debuutalbum op, "Green is Blues". Het album wordt goed ontvangen en bereidt de weg voor voor het volgende album "Al Green Gets Next To You" (1970). Op dit album staat o.a. zijn eerste grote solo-hit, "Tired of Being Alone".
    Het titelnummer van "Let's Stay Together" (1972) wordt zijn eerste nummer-één-hit in Amerika. Het in datzelfde jaar uitgebrachte album "I'm Still In Love With You" is ook een groot succes, waarvan meerdere hits afkomen. Ook "Call me" (1973) is een succes, met meerdere hitsingles.
    Al Green is rond deze tijd op zijn hoogtepunt, en wordt beschouwd als de grootste soul-artiest van het moment, naast Marvin Gaye.

    Al Green bekeert zich tot het Christendom en wordt in 1976 dominee in Memphis.
    In 1977, als de verkoopcijfers beginnen te dalen, beëindigt hij de samenwerking met Mitchell, en richt zijn eigen muziekstudio op, American Music. "The Belle Album" scoort bij critici, maar weet geen publiek te vinden.
    Vanaf 1981 brengt Green enkel gospel-albums uit. Eind jaren tachtig keert hij terug naar de soul en R&B. Dit is het eerst goed te horen op "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" (1988), een duet met Annie Lennox voor de soundtrack van "Scrooged". Het nummer wordt een wereldwijde hit. Een tweede hit scoort hij het jaar daarop met "The Message Is Love", een samenwerking met Arthur Baker, afkomstig van diens album "Merge".

    In 1993 brengt hij zijn eerste echte soulalbum sinds jaren uit, "Don't Look Back". Het album wordt geproduceerd door de Fine Young Cannibals en Arthur Baker.
    In 2003 brengt hij nog het goed ontvangen album "I Can't Stop" uit.

    Des vacances en France, The French Holiday Compilation

    I've been on holiday in France for a couple of times, and always there are songs that keep lingering in the back of my head. They bring back memories every time i hear them. I would like to share them with you. Tell me what they do to you.

    On this comp I've been cheating a bit. The Honeymoon Killers are not French (they're Belgian) but they sing a song about the main highway to the south of France. The song "Route nationale 7" is written though by the French chansonnier Charles Trenet.
    And Fay Lovsky is Dutch but she sings the funniest French I've ever heard in "Appellation Controlée", a song about getting drunk on cheap wine on the banks of the Parisian river Seine.

    You can not get more French than the theme song from the movie "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot" by Jacques Tati, and do listen to France Gall, Michel Jonasz and Muriel Dacq (oui, je sais bien qu'elle aussi vient de la Belgique).
