McDonald, I'm lovin' it

De Amerikaanse soulzanger Michael McDonald (12 februari 1952, St. Louis, Missouri) zong oorspronkelijk bij Steely Dan. In 1975 sloot hij zich als leadzanger aan bij The Doobie Brothers, waarvan hij de muzikale koers sterk veranderde, mede door zijn typische warme gruizige stem.

Hij verliet deze groep in 1982 om een solocarriere te beginnen. Aanvankelijk was die succesvol. Zo scoorde hij in 1986 een hit met Patti Labelle ("On My Own"). Verder had hij een megahit met "Yah Mo B There" samen met James Ingram, maar waarschijnlijk is hij het bekendst van "Sweet Freedom".
Aan het eind van de jaren '80 was zijn populariteit alweer behoorlijk gedaald.

In 2003 kwam Michael McDonald terug met een nieuw album met covers van klassieke Motown-nummers.
In de zomer van 2006 tourde hij met Steely Dan.

What a fool believes van the Doobie Brothers

De naam van de band mag dan discutabel zijn ("Doobie" is een marihuana-joint), maar het aantal hits dat ze hebben gescoord laat weinig twijfel bestaan over de hitpotentie van deze heren uit Californië. De combinatie van gospel, jazz en populaire muziek maakte de band beroemd.
In 1970 wordt de band opgericht, maar het debuutalbum flopt. Daarom is het tijd voor versterking, Tom Johnston en Patrick Simmons worden de voormannen. Het is raak, want "Listen tot the music" is een grote hit.
Kort daarna treedt Michael McDonald toe tot de Doobie Brothers. Een nieuwe zanger betekent een nieuw geluid en dat is te horen in het nummer "What a fool believes"!

Aan het begin van de jaren '80 is het over en uit voor de Doobie Brothers. McDonald had toen solo al een aantal hits gescoord, en met een afscheidstournee luiden de mannen het einde van de band in. Om in 1989 terug te komen met de CD "Cycles"...
In februari 2005 is drummer Keith Knudsen op 56 jarige leeftijd overleden aan kanker.
