Het in Memphis gevestigde Stax-label werd in de jaren zestig een van de belangrijkste leveranciers van soulmuziek en een concurrent van het in Detroit gehuisveste Motown Records. De belangrijkste sterren van Stax waren o.a. Booker T. and the MG's, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave en Rufus Thomas.
De zingende familie The Staple Singers begon in de jaren vijftig als gospelgroep. Vader Pops en dochter Mavis vervulden de centrale rollen en dochters Cleotha en Yvonne Staples moesten het met een bijrol doen. Bij het toetreden tot het Staxlabel in 1967 legde de groep zich helemaal toe op de soul, maar liet het gospelelement altijd bestaan in de soms behoorlijk religieus getinte teksten en de
call and response in hun zang.
Gospel was sinds de dagen van slavernij een belangrijk element van het dagelijkse leven in de zwarte gemeenschap.The Staple Singers haalden met 'Respect Yourself' de banden met gospel en Martin Luther King steviger aan, net als Aretha Franklin dat met 'Respect' deed.
Bekende grote hits van The Staple Singers zijn: het reggae-achtige 'I'll Take You There', 'Respect Yourself' (ooit succesvol gecoverd door The Talking Heads) en 'This World'.
De muziek is vooral funky met een korrelige zang. Het zijn de rauwe vocalen van Mavis en haar eigengereidheid om zangpartijen op haar eigen manier in te vullen, die de soul van The Staple Singers zo intens en bij vlagen hartverscheurend maakt.
The Staple Singers hebben nooit de enorme status bereikt van bijvoorbeeld de Hawkins- of Winans-clans maar zijn minstens zo belangrijk geweest voor de ontwikkeling van gospel naar soul en weer terug.
