Hoe MaCaCo "den aap uithangt"...
Dani ‘MonoLoco’ Carbonell
is Macaco, en daarmee het uithangbord van één van de meest inventieve en creatieve bands uit Spanje.
Macaco opereert vanuit de muzikale bruistablet Barcelona, waar ook
Manu Chao z'n stek heeft. Meer nog dan bij Chao of
Sergent Garcia, mag het begrip "wereldmuziek" hier erg letterlijk worden genomen.

hing Dani nog
de ‘aap’ uit op de Ramblas in Barcelona, maar met platen als ‘Rumbo Submarino’ en ‘Ingravitto’ bewees Macaco dat hun mix van hiphop, rumba, latin en flamenco best wel werkt.
Macaco voelen instinctief aan dat de toekomst draait rond een multiculturele dialoog: Flamenco, ska, rock, reggae, rap, salsa, Afrikaans, dub, subtiele elektronica, en onder andere samba worden kristalhelder, en met zin voor zelfrelativering door elkaar gemixt.
Dat heb je natuurlijk met een groep waarvan de leden afkomstig zijn uit Spanje, Kameroen, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Cuba en Brazilië...

Na veel zoukwerk: Kassav
In 1979 besloot Pierre-Edouard Décimus samen met Freddy Marshall hun favoriete muziek in een moderner jasje te steken. Het ging om de populaire muziek
carnival en met succes combineerde Décimus dit genre met moderne technieken. De twee heren zochten er nog wat muzikanten bij en doken, terwijl de band zich bleef ontwikkelen, samen de studio in. Het eerste album 'Love and Ka Dance' was het resultaat.
Een nieuw muziekgenre was geboren:
zouk.
Kassav bracht 4 albums uit tot ze besloten tijdelijk te stoppen. Verschillende bandleden brachten een solo-album uit, maar het werk voor Kassav kreeg ook nog genoeg aandacht.
In de Caribbean tourden ze rond en op een gegeven moment kregen ze ook bekendheid in het buitenland. Frankrijk, de Antillen en Afrika lagen aan hun voeten. Kassav speelde voor uitverkochte zalen en ze brachten de ene na de andere cd uit.
In 1999 werd een verzamelalbum uitgebracht, om het 20-jarig jubileum van de groep te vieren. Critici spraken over het einde van Kassav; de bezetting zou te oud zijn, de formule was uitgewerkt, de mensen hadden het gehad. Niets bleek minder waar; een concert in Parijs bracht 32.000 fans in uitzinnige sfeer.
In de ruim 25 jaar dat de groep nu bestaat, heeft Kassav bewezen dat muziek uit de Carribbean, gezongen in het Creools, zeker op een grote schare fans kan rekenen...

The sixth ethnic BoBW compilation
Just another trip around the world. Care to join me?
Off course we start in the Belgium/Holland area, with the Dutch dialect group Twarres and the underrated Belgian singer Wigbert van Lierde. But we go north where we meet Emiliana Torrini. The way back south goes through Eastern Europa with Mahala Rai Banda and InCulto and heads to the Mediterranean Sea, where we visit Greece and Cyprus, Further on we go to Turkey and Egypt. And that's just the Western world...
Equally interesting to discover is Senegal (with Touré Kunda) , North America (Joe 'King' Carrasco) and Canada (Bombay Talkie)... For now.

Zapping from one continent to another
De groep Zap Mama werd in 1990 opgericht door
Marie Daulne, een Belgische van Kongolese afkomst. Hun muziek is een mengeling van soul, gospel en Afro-Cubaanse ritmes. Ze zingen in het Frans en het Engels met Afrikaanse roots.
In 1990 bracht Daulne vijf jonge meisjes met betoverende stemmen bij elkaar. Zij is in het vroegere Zaire geboren uit een Belgische vader en een zwarte moeder. Deze dubbele achtergrond is de sleutel voor al haar muzikale creaties.
Het eerste album "Zap Mama" (1991) was
a capella gezongen, en in 1994 kwam de tweede CD uit, "Sabsylma", een mengeling van Indische, Marokkaanse en Australische muziek.
Na een twee jaar durende wereldreis keerde Daulne naar Brussel terug met een volgende plaat in haar hoofd, "Seven" (1997). Nieuwe muzikanten kwamen bij de groep en de nummers werden verrijkt met tot dan onbekende klanken.
In de herfst van 1998 vertrok de groep voor een tournee door Afrika. Het leverde Daulne de inspiratie op voor het vierde album van Zap Mama, "A ma zone" (2000).
Marie Daulne heeft zich sindsdien in de Verenigde Staten gevestigd.
De stijl van Zap Mama ontwikkelde zich en de groep ging de Amerikaanse r&b en hiphop verkennen. Het heeft z'n vruchten afgeworpen: op "Ancestry in progress" zijn er gastoptredens van onder andere Erykah Badu, Common, Talib Kweli, Bilal en ?uestlove. Het geluid van Zap Mama is steeds verder verschoven van puur vocale acrobatiek naar een grotere rol voor de instrumentatie. "Ancestry In Progress" klinkt vooral in de eerste helft als de neo-soul die we van Badu kennen, maar naarmate het album vordert, komen er meer stukken langs, waarin we de stemkunstenarij van vroeger terughoren...

While half of the world is concentrating on an ridiculously expensive game of soccer, I'm turning the other side. I won't pay attention to
the Football World Cup 2010 in South-Africa but I'ld like to present another 16 songs from all over the world. One of them is South-African though...
By coincidence a lot of these songs are from the United States and France (and even some American ones are sung in French, like "Ma 'Tit Fille"/"My Lil' Girl" by
Buckwheat Zydeco, and "Les Oignons"/"The onions" by
Beausoleil and Michael Doucet. On top of that, the Belgian singer
Johan Verminnen has several albums in French too).

The 4th Best of World, another ethnic BoBW compilation
The opening song of this fourth world compilation discribes exactly the mood of a small Dutch town on a sunday morning, and what the local brass band does (besides drinking their beer)... But the two following songs have something to do with brass bands as well, each in their own typical way.
This collection of songs takes you once again all over the world, and brings you a lot of different flavours: Italian reggae by Loredana Berte, French zouk by Kassav, Nigerian juju by King Sunny Ade and even American opera by the Houston Grand Opera Choir.
And from the USA comes one of my all time favorite songs: the haunting Jezebel Spirit by Brian Eno & David Byrne.

The 3rd Best of World, another ethnic BoBW compilation
What exactly is world music, I ask myself. Songs from my own country may not be foreign or ethnic to me, but they may be to you. And music from the other side of the world is probably very exotic to Europeans, but what if you live in that corner of the world?
So here are sixteen songs from all over the world. One of them is Dutch but sounds meditterranean ("Bossa Dorado" by The Rosenberg Trio), and one is Belgian but sounds oriental ("Louxor In Vegas" by Dan Lacksman).
My favorites are "Nahin Jeena" by Rishi Rich (sounds Indian but is British) and "Arash" by Arash (sounds as from the Middle East but is Swedish).
Do pay special attention to "Coumba" by the Senegalese Orchestre Baobab and "Le Défi" by the Algerian Djur Djura...

How Fortunate... the Man with None: Dead Can Dance
Dead Can Dance is de band van Lisa Gerrard en Brendan Perry, die werd opgericht in 1981 in Melbourne, Australië. In 1998 gingen de twee uit elkaar, maar in 2005 maakten ze samen nog een wereldtournee.
Na een weinig succesvolle start in Australië vertrokken ze naar Londen, waar ze na een jaar tekenden bij het alternatieve rock-label 4AD, waar ze een van de belangrijkste bands werden. Ze bleven nauw samenwerken totdat ze aan het begin van de jaren 90 uit elkaar begonnen te groeien. Lisa Gerrard ging terug naar Australië, maar Perry ging naar Ierland, waar hij een oude kerk kocht, waar hij woont en werkt. Men speculeert dat de afstand tussen de bandleden invloed had op hun uiteindelijke uit elkaar gaan, hoewel Perry zelf heeft gezegd dat de afstand hielp om een zekere individuele creatieve vrijheid te behouden.
Het is moeilijk Dead Can Dance in een bepaald muziekgenre in te delen, aangezien hun stijl nogal eclectisch was. Niettemin kan hun vroege werk
gothisch genoemd worden. In hun latere werk, na The Serpent's Egg, liet Dead Can Dance zich inspireren door oude muziek, of muziek uit verre landen, waarbij Lisa Gerrard
glossolalie zong (ook wel
klanktaal of
tongentaal genoemd), waardoor ze een zeer onderscheidend, op wereldmuziek gelijkende stijl hadden. Als gevolg hiervan verschillen hun latere albums in klank nogal van de eerste drie. Ze worden beschouwd als

Best of World, the second ethnic compilation
While almost the whole of Europe is practising their national anthems this week, because of the European Football Championship, I'ld like to share some songs from a lot of different countries.
From Europe comes Jovanotti (Italy), Rowwen Heze (The Netherlands) and Natasha Atlas. Three songs have their roots in France: Le Tribu De Dana (by Manau), King Kong Five (Mano Negra) and Acabar Mal (Sergent Garcia). The Belgian song "7 Steken" by Laïs talks about a man who kills his pregnant girlfriend with seven stabs of a knife. (What is it, with these Belgians and their morbid reputation?)
And off course I couldn't leave South-America and Africa out, on a world compilation...

Hi Haza
Ofra Haza (19 november 1957 - 23 februari 2000) was een idool van vele Israëlische vrouwen. Ze groeide op in de arme buurt van Tel Aviv. Zij werd ontdekt door Bezalel Aloni, die leiding gaf aan een zingende jeugdgroep in haar wijk. Hij werd haar producer, huiscomponist en mentor tot zij vele jaren later in 1997 in het huwelijk trad.
Haza's doorbraak was met "Sjier Hafrecha". Vele Israëlische hits en meermalige verkiezingen tot 'zangeres van het jaar' door de verschillende radiostations zouden volgen. Tot haar internationale doorbraak in 1988 werd zij vaak vergeleken met een andere zangeres, Yardena Arazi.
Haar internationale debuut maakte Ofra Haza tijdens het Eurovisie Songfestival van 1983, met het nummer "Chai ". In 1988 scoorde Haza haar grootste internationale hit met het nummer "Im Nin'alu", van het album Shaday. Ook boekte ze internationale successen met het nummer "Temple of Love" (samen met de groep The Sisters of Mercy), My love is for real (met Paula Abdul) en zong ze voor de film "The Prince of Egypt" (1998).
In 1997 trouwde Ofra Haza met de Israëlische zakenman Doron Ashkenazi. Zij stierf in 2000 in Ramat Gan aan de gevolgen van aids. Ashkenazi stierf na haar door dezelfde oorzaak. Hij wordt er wel van verdacht, haar besmet te hebben. Tussen de families Haza en Ashkenazi woedde nog enkele jaren een strijd over auteursrechten...

Sowieso jazzy: Aziza Mustafa Zadeh
Met scat-improvisaties in haar moedertaal neemt de Azerbeidjaanse pianiste/zangeres Aziza Mustafa Zadeh een wel heel bijzondere plaats in. Haar muziek is een mengeling van jazz, klassiek en folkmuziek.
Ze is de dochter van Vagif Mustafa Zadeh, een jazzcomponist en pianist, aan wie ze veel van haar werk opdraagt. Haar moeder is ook zangeres en bovendien haar manager.
Zadeh, die tegenwoordig in Duitsland woont, heeft inmiddels al veel CD’s uitgebracht, waarop ze samenspeelt met artiesten als Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Al Di Meola, Bill Evans en Stanley Clarke...

Embrace Ozomatli !
Ozomatli mixt Latin, funk en salsa met hiphop. Het resultaat is dat je de salsa danst op een swingende hiphop samba. Ozomatli is niet voor niets vernoemd naar de Azteekse god van de dans.
Op het podium is Ozomatli een spetterende 10-koppige multi-culturele feestband met Afrikaans, Chicano, Cubaans, Japans, joods en Filippijns bloed in de aderen. De harde kern bestaat uit Raul 'El Bully' Pacheco, Ulises Bella, Jiro Yamaguchi, Cut Chemist, Wil-Dog Abers, Mairo Calire, Rene 'Spinobi' Dominguez, Justin 'Niûo' PorÄe, Asdrubal Sierra en Jabu.
Ozomatli maakte een aantal jaren geleden naam door zeer spectaculaire live optredens - ze hebben namelijk de gewoonte dwars door de zaal naar het podium te lopen. En dit dan met veel kabaal. Als Ozomatli eenmaal op het podium staat, dan zie je een imposante band met blazers, rappers, d.j.'s en veel percussie.
Op hun debuut-cd "Ozomatli" zijn turntablist Cut Chemist (o.a. Jurassic 5) en mc's Pos en TruGoy van De La Soul van de partij.
Hun CD "Embrace the Chaos" verscheen toevallig op 11 september 2001, waardoor de titel opeens een erg beladen betekenis kreeg. Maar Ozomatli heeft zich van de commotie rond de gebeurtenissen weinig aangetrokken. Sociale rechtvaardigheid en wereldvrede bleven de voornaamste pijlers van hun boodschap, die ze op een prettige manier verpakken.
Op "Embrace The Chaos" is er medewerking van Black Eyed Peas, Common, De la Soul en vele anderen.
"Street Signs" is het 3e album van de mannen: van Spaanstalige juweeltjes als Doûa Isabelle, Santiago en Te Estoy Buscando tot Engelstalige hiphop-achtige tracks als titelsong Street Signs, Saturday Night en Who's To Blame, het niveau blijft constant hoog.
Maar vraag me niet welk label je er op plakt: latin punk, cumbia, salsa, batucada, mestizo, hiphop of reggae? Of alles samen?
