Spam, spam, spam and spam. And Monty Python
Monty Python is de naam van een Britse komediegroep die vijf films, ontelbare albums, vier computerspellen, verscheidene boeken, vier tv-seizoenen met 45 afleveringen en diverse andere merchandising op haar naam heeft staan. De groep bestaat uit de leden Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones en Michael Palin. De groep staat bekend om het (succesvol) doorbreken van de toen conventionele komedieregels.
De tv-reeks Monty Python's Flying Circus werd uitgezonden door de BBC van 1969 tot 1974, en alle leden van Monty Python schreven eraan mee en acteerden. Het was een show met losse sketches en animaties, maar met een vernieuwende aanpak en stijl.
Na 1974 deed Monty Python nog theatershows, maar zeer bekend zijn vooral hun films, zoals Monty Python and the Holy Grail en Monty Python's Life of Brian.
George Harrison financierde Life of Brian en trad daarin ook op. Ook was hij de producer tijdens de opnames van een aantal Python-liedjes, waaronder de Lumberjack Song.
Hun laatste film, The Meaning of Life, was het laatste project waar de volledige Python crew aan meegewerkt heeft. Helaas overleed Graham Chapman op 4 oktober 1989 op 48-jarige leeftijd aan keel- en ruggengraatkanker. Als eerbetoon gaven de Pythons een begrafenis zoals geen ander, vol met de humor van Monty Python.
In 1998 kwamen de 6 Pythons bijelkaar (inclusief een urn als Chapman) om hun werk opnieuw te bekijken en een prijs in ontvangst te nemen.
Om te vieren dat Python 30 jaar bestaat, kwamen alle nog levende Pythons (exclusief Eric Idle, die weigerde mee te werken) weerbij elkaar om nieuwe sketches op te nemen en diverse documentaires. Volgens Terry Jones zal het hier waarschijnlijk bij blijven.
Naast films en series kwamen alle overlevende Pythons in 2005 samen op de première van Spamalot, de musical gebaseerd op Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Cheesy humour or brie-lliant? Richard Cheese!
Richard Cheese is een Amerikaanse cover-band, uit Los Angeles, Californië. Ze spelen voornamelijk covers van populaire rockbands en rappers en geven hier een eigen muzikale draai aan door er een vrolijk jazz- of loungenummer van te maken in de stijl van Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin en Tony Bennett..
Bij ons hebben ze nog relatief weinig bekendheid, maar in de Verenigde Staten zijn ze vooral bekend van hun cover van Disturbed's "Down with the Sickness", uit de horrorfilm "Dawn of the Dead" uit 2004.
Alle bandleden gebruiken een pseudoniem dat verwijst naar een kaassoort. Dit is omdat de bandleden regelmatig verschillen. Het enige constante bandlid is Cheese zelf, die als stand-up comedian en voice-over-artiest
(veel Batman-cartoons!) door het leven gaat onder zijn eigen naam,
Mark Jonathan Davis (27 november 1965, New York).
Hoe hij aan de dubbelzinnige ranzige naam Dick Cheese komt lees je op
zijn Engelse Wikipedia-pagina.
Momenteel hebben al een flink aantal bassisten de rol van Gordon Brie gespeeld. Deze plaats wordt maar niet ingevuld. Na het vertrek van drummer Buddy Gouda (Charles Byler) in 2004 werd voor een nieuw karakter gekozen, in de persoon van Frank Feta, oftewel Brian Fishler.
De rol van Bobby Ricotta wordt momenteel vervuld door Noel Melanio.
Een bezetting die dus veel overeenlomst vertoont met gruyere dus.
De drie (!) nieuwe CDs "Viva la Vodka", "Lavapalooza" en "O.K. Bartender" (2009) zijn niet te koop via de normale kanalen, maar zijn enkel te bestellen via zijn website.
Op dit moment is de band bezig met de "Martini Hero" Farewell Tour, daarna volgen nog de albums "Back in Black Tie" en "A Lounge Supreme" (allebei voor 2010).

The Silly Record
In 1961 werkte debuterend schrijver Stuart 'Stoo' Hample aan een manuscript met de legendarische uitgeefster-van-kinderboeken Ursula Nordstrom.
Er wordt verteld dat Stuart Hample op hun eerste ontmoeting zou gezegd hebben, "Je zou toch niet zo stom zijn om een boek uit te geven dat IK schrijf?" Waarop Ursula Nordstrom zou gereageerd hebben met "Jij kunt geen boek schrijven dat zò stom is, dat ik het niet wil uitgeven". Hample liet zich dat geen twee keer zeggen, en ...de rest is geschiedenis.
'The Silly Book' was een
instant succes en er werd meteen een 'Silly Record' van gemaakt. En de merchandising bestond uit onder andere een Boodleheimer (de hond van de cover) en een serie poppen...
Ruim 45 jaar na het verschijnen is erg nog steeds erg veel vraag naar het boek. De 'sillyness' is nog altijd ontwapenend stom, en kan zonder probleem -ook in deze tijd- nog altijd de harten van kleine kinderen winnen.
"Life," zegt de auteur en illustrator
"is essentially silly, or why would there be war, disease, and dandruff?" Stoo Hample is de Da Vinci van de dwaasheid, de Socrates van de stommigheid, de Fellini van de flauwe kul en de Gershwin van de gekkigheid...
Deze rip van de vinyl-LP is van een mindere kwaliteit, maar is toch nog goed genoeg om te genieten van dwaze rijmpjes, onzinverhalen, woordspelingen met (drie)dubbele bodems... En dat alles op een kindertoontje dat zo tenenkrommend is, dat het cult kan worden...
De helft van de fragmenten klokken onder de minuut, en veel langer moet die ongein niet duren. Maar als je in een supermelige bui bent, is dit dé manier om niet meer bij te komen!
