The Solitary Man in Black Comes Around: Johnny Cash

Johnny (J.R.) Cash (Kingsland (Arkansas), 26 februari 1932 - Nashville (Tennessee), 12 september 2003) was een Amerikaanse countryzanger, gitarist en singer-songwriter. Hij werd wereldwijd bekend als The Man in Black en viel op door zijn diepe baritonstem. Hij was van 1954 tot 1966 getrouwd met Vivian Liberto en vanaf 1968 met June Carter, die op 15 mei 2003 overleed. Johnny Cash overleed later datzelfde jaar op 71-jarige leeftijd vanwege ademhalingsstoornissen, veroorzaakt door diabetes. Hij was een van de invloedrijkste zangers in het country-genre.

Op twaalfjarige leeftijd schreef Cash zijn eerste liedjes, geïnspireerd door de countrymuziek die hij hoorde op de radio. In 1955 probeerde Cash's eerste band (met groep gitarist Luther Perkins en bassist Marshall Grant) auditie te doen bij Sun Records. Na enkele mislukte audities vroeg de oprichter van Sun Records, Sam Phillips, of hij met iets commerciëlers wilde terugkomen. Dat werd zijn debuut en eerste hit, het nummer Hey Porter. Daarna volgden Folsom Prison Blues en zijn eerste grote hit, I Walk the Line (eind 1956). In november 1957 verscheen zijn eerste album, Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar. Door een slopend toerschema stortte Cash in en raakte hij verslaafd. In 1963 hielp June Carter, toen nog de vrouw van één van zijn drinkvrienden, hem er weer bovenop. Ze schreef één van zijn bekendste nummers, Ring of Fire. Vanaf de jaren zestig nam hij met haar enkele nummers op, waaronder Long legged guitar pickin' man en Jackson.
Op het voorlaatste album stond onder andere zijn wereldhit A Boy Named Sue.

In 1986 liet Columbia Records hem vallen en tekende Cash een contract met Mercury. In 1993 tekende hij bij American Records van Rick Rubin. Zijn eerste album daar, American Recordings werd geproduceerd door Rubin, Het bevatte eigen nummers maar ook een aantal covers van onder andere Leonard Cohen en Neil Diamond. Het introduceerde Cash bij een jong alternatief publiek...

Bloed, tranen en zweet: Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Raitt (Burbank (Californië), 8 november 1949) is een Amerikaanse zangeres, liedjesschrijfster en gitariste.
Ze is de dochter van Broadway musicalster John Raitt. Ze begon gitaar te spelen toen ze twaalf was. Na de middelbare school begon ze in Rhythm and Bluesclubs te spelen.

In 1983 verbrak Warner Bros. Records het contract, onder andere vanwege alcohol- en drugsgebruik, maar zij verdween allerminst uit de muziekscene. Na meer dan 20 jaar opnames en optredens, bereikte Raitt succes met haar tiende album. "Nick of Time" kwam in de top te staan in de Verenigde Staten en won drie Grammy Awards. Voor ze begon aan Nick of Time had Raitt de interesse van verschillende grote platenlabels. Rond deze tijd ontmoette ze producer Don Was, via Hal Wilner, die werkte aan een album voor Disney. Beiden wilden graag dat Raitt een volwassen versie van "Baby Mine" zou zingen, een lied uit de film Dumbo. Raitt was tevreden over de opnames, en ze vroeg Was haar nieuwe album te produceren.
Tegelijk kreeg ze een vierde Grammy voor haar duet "In the Mood" met John Lee Hooker op zijn album "The Healer".

Hierna kreeg in ze 1993 nog drie Grammy Awards voor haar album "Luck of the Draw", waarna ze in 1994 nog twee Grammy's kreeg voor haar album "Longing in Their Hearts".
Raitt trouwde in 1991 met acteur Michael O'Keefe, maar dit huwelijk kwam in 2000 ten einde.

Waar Bobbejaan de mosterd haalde: Slim Whitman

Slim Whitman (Ottis "Slim" Dewey Whitman, Jr., 20 januari 1924) is een Amerikaanse country singer/songwriter. Hij was bekend om zijn jodelen (ja, "jodelen") en zijn heldere overslaande stem.

Whitman verkocht meer dan een miljoen platen en blijft nog steeds een levende legende in de country-and-western-muziekindustrie, met een carriere die 7 decades overspant
Gek genoeg is hij populairder in de UK dan in zijn geboorteland, de VS. Hij heeft wel onafgebroken getoerd in Europa.
Zijn hitsingle "Rose Marie" uit 1955 was tientallen jaren recordhouder als het om hitnotering op nr.1 gaat. Bryan Adams brak echter dat record in 1991 na 36 jaar. In de US belandden zijn songs "Indian Love Call" (1952) en "Secret Love" (1953) op nummer 2 in de Billboard country chart. Van de mid-60s tot de mid-70s had Whitman een reeks kleinere hits.

In de eighties kwam hij echter terug en werd omhelsd door een jongere generatie. Dat had te maken met clevere marketing waardoor zijn song "Indian Love Call" in de film "Mars Attacks!" terecht kwam. In 2003 gebruikte Rob Zombie Whitman's song "I Remember You" voor zijn regiedebuut House of 1000 Corpses.

Whitman woont tegenwoordig in Middleburg, Florida.

Emmylou Harris as Intended To Be

De  Amerikaanse countryzangeres, folkzangeres en songwriter Emmylou Harris (Birmingham (Alabama), 2 april 1947) kende vooral in de jaren zeventig succes. Ze heeft met zeer veel bekende artiesten uit de country- en folkwereld samengewerkt. Harris nam bijna veertig jaar geleden haar eerste plaat op en werd in februari 2008 opgenomen in de Country Music Hall of Fame. Al die jaren bleef ze live en in de studio zeer actief.

Ze zong een indrukwekkend solo-oeuvre bijeen dat naast eigen werk ook zorgvuldig gekozen covers omvat. Ze begon met zingen met Gram Parsons. Na zijn vroege dood moest Emmylou doorgaan als solo-artiest en ze is vanaf dat moment geen moment gestopt. Bekend om haar "folk" stijl, gemengd met country en rock, is het nooit te voorspellen wat je te horen krijgt.

Vanaf het midden van de jaren zeventig werkte ze veelvuldig samen met onder andere Dolly Parton en Linda Ronstadt en Neil Young. Zo waren zij alle drie te horen in het achtergrondkoor van Harris' kerstnummer "Light of the Stable". Samen met Ronstadt en Parton nam ze twee albums op (Trio (1987) en Trio 2 (1999), en samen met Ronstadt hetn duetalbum "Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions" (2000).
Begin de jaren negentig dreigde ze even weg te deemsteren. In 1995 nam ze, samen met Daniel Lanois, 'Wrecking Ball' op, een voor haar doen zeer experimentele plaat die ze ook live wist te verzilveren. Vele niet country liefhebbers kwamen zo in contact met haar unieke stemgeluid en zouden haar blijven volgen.

Op haar eerste studioalbum in vijf jaar "All I Intended To Be" pakt bijvoorbeeld de samenwerking met de zusjes Kate en Anna McGarrigle weer heel goed uit en is ook de tweede stem van Dolly Parton memorabel. Achter de knoppen zat Brian Ahern, dezelfde producer die haar hielp om de klassiekers 'Elite Hotel, Pieces of the Sky en Blue Kentucky Girl' in te blikken. Op het menu staan, naast zelfgeschreven levensliederen ook parels geschreven door Tracy Chapman ('All that you have is your soul'), Merle Haggard en Billy Joe Shaver.

Lyle Lovett: love it or leave it

Lyle Pearce Lovett (1 november 1957) is hier vooral bekend als acteur en als de ex van Julia Roberts. Dat hij meer in zijn mars heeft blijkt uit zijn muzikale repertoire. Hij komt uit Texas en verloochent zijn country-roots niet. Tijdens zijn studie trad hij al geregeld als zanger-gitarist op in koffiehuizen en in de plaatselijke pizzeria.

Bij MCA Records komt in '86 Lovetts eerste solo-album uit. Dan raakt zijn carrière in een stroomversnellin. Hij krijgt hits met "If I Were The Man You Wanted" en "San Antonio Girl.". De muziekpers is lovend. En met name in het alternatieve circuit is hij een graag gezien gast.
Lovett krijgt in '89 zijn eerste Grammy voor zijn album Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. Er zouden er nog meer volgen: In 1993 voor zijn duet met Al Green, "Funny How Time Slips Away."; in '94 voor "Blues for Dixie" en in 1996 voor The Road to Ensenada. Bij ons zal hij echter bekend worden met het prachtige "She's no lady (she's my wife)" van het album Pontiac.

Be Good and BeHave: Be Good Tanyas

The Be Good Tanyas is een Canadese traditionele muziekgroep met invloeden als folk, country en bluegrass. De band is opgericht in British Columbia.
Hun eerste optreden was in Vancouver aan het eind van de jaren 1990.

In 2000 gingen ze op tour door Noord-Amerika, tot in New Orleans, waarna ze hun eerste album opnamen, Blue Horse, naar verluidt in een schuurtje. De plaat, met daarop zowel standards als "Oh Susannah" en "The Lakes of Pontchartrain" als zelfgeschreven liedjes als "The Littlest Birds (sing the prettiest songs)," (bij ons ook bekend in de vertaling van Eva de Roovere) werden warm ontvangen. Ze werden in de folkwereld hoog geprezen om de kwaliteit van de harmonievocalen en de mix-van-nieuw-en-traditioneel in de instrumentatie. Geholpen door de populariteit van Americana in die tijd, behaalde het album zelfs enig succes als crossover op de Amerikaanse college-radio's.

Hun tweede album, Chinatown, volgde in 2003. Luister (en huiver) naar de ingetogen cover van “Waiting Around To Die” van wijlen Townes Van Zandt of bij de wedergeboorte van het in de uitvoering van de Animals bekende “House Of The Rising Sun”. Terloops werd thematisch een indrukwekkend aantal onderwerpen aangekaart: van drugs tot gokken, van Jezus tot New Orleans, van geboorte tot dood, van verloren liefde tot de gevaren van het leven in de grote stad.
Ook het derde album kent een evenwichtige verdeling tussen eigen nummers, covers en traditionals. De mooiste covers zijn For the Turnstiles van Neil Young, en vooral Nobody Cares for me van Mississippi John Hurt. Op dat nummer worden ze bijgestaan door ex-lid Jolie Holland, wat leidt tot een beetje tegendraads harmonieus gezongen blues. Een curiositeit is de hidden track When Doves Cry.

...dixit Chicks !

Tijdens een optreden voor 600 man in Londen, in januari 2003, greep zangeres Nathalie Maines van de Dixie Chicks de kans om zich te distanti‘ren van een bekende Texaan: George W. Bush. Ze beweerde zich te schamen uit dezelfde staat te komen als de Amerikaanse opperbevelhebber.
De opmerking was uitgelokt, vertelt Maines. Een aantal bezoekers herinnerden Maines er luidruchtig aan dat zij, net als de "Slager van het Witte Huis" uit Texas kwam. Maines was het zat en diende de toeschouwers van repliek. Met groot succes; de band had een heel leuke avond.
Nog geen twee weken later werd de opmerking breed uitgemeten in de Amerikaanse media. Op zich hoefden de Chicks er zich weinig van aan te trekken, ware het niet dat ze country muziek maken en dat veel conservatieve country-fans George W. Bush zeer kunnen waarderen. Kritiek op Bush maakt je in de zuidelijke staten van Amerika niet populair...
Is het misschien daarom dat hun nieuwe CD 'Taking the Long Way' minder country-getint is en de weg van bijvoorbeeld Shania Twain kiest: meer pop-getint en smooth...
