How not to win an Oscar: Clint Mansell

Clint Mansell (Coventry, 7 januari 1963) is een voor een Golden Globe genomineerde Brits musicus en componist. Mansell begon als leadzanger en gitarist in de Britse band Pop Will Eat Itself. Na het uiteenvallen in 1996 ging hij als filmmuziek-componist aan de slag waarna zijn vriend Darren Aronofsky hem de kans gaf om muziek te componeren voor de film Pi .

Ondanks positieve recensies pikte het grote publiek zijn muziek niet op. Het soundtrack-album voor Pi plaatste het werk van Mansell tussen elektronica-artiesten als Autechre, Aphex Twin, Orbital en Roni Size. Hier mee won hij veel IDM- en elektronica-fans voor zich.
Na de filmmuziek voor Darren Aronofsky's film Requiem For A Dream werd zijn bekendheid bij het grote publiek groter. De soundtrack werd uitgevoerd door The Kronos Quartet, bestaande uit twee violisten, een altviolist en een cellist. De soundtrack is instrumentaal en bestaat uit vele korte nummers.
De muziek van Black Swan is gebaseerd op Het Zwanenmeer van Tsjaikovski, Iets te veel, blijkbaar. Want wegens "net niet oorspronkelijk genoeg" werd de soundtrack afgekeurd om in aanmerking te komen voor een Oscar.

The Glass menagerie

Philip Glass (Baltimore, 31 januari 1937) is een Amerikaans componist. Zijn muziek valt onder Minimal music, hoewel hij zelf de term theater muziek gebruikt.
Glass heeft wiskunde en filosofie gestudeerd maar wilde echter componist worden.

Na zijn studie reisde Glass naar Parijs voor twee verdere jaren van studie bij Nadia Boulanger. Hier werd hem gevraagd om de Indische muziek van Ravi Shankar om te zetten in Westerse muzieknotaties. Hiervoor reisde hij naar Noord-India in 1966, waar hij in contact kwam met Tibetaanse vluchtelingen. Hij werd Boeddhist en ondersteunt de Tibetaanse zaak.
Het werken met Ravi Shankar, en zijn opvatting van ritme in de Indische muziek, heeft tot de specifieke stijl van de muziek van Philip Glass geleid.

Na zijn reizen begon hij met het schrijven van zware stukken gebaseerd op additieve ritmes.
Glass vormde de Philip Glass Ensemble en speelde vooral in kunstgaleries.
Zijn werk werd langzaam minder zwaar maar complexer, waarbij uiteindelijk "Music in Twelve Parts" (1974) ontstond.

Zijn eerste opera "Einstein on the Beach" (1976) maakte hij samen met Robert Wilson. Dit werd uiteindelijk een trilogie met "Satyagraha", gebaseerd op het leven van Mahatma Gandhi.
"Akhnaten" (1983) verhaalt het leven van de Egyptische farao Achnaton. Akhnaten is ook onderdeel van een trilogie waarin de grote revolutionairen van de wereldgeschiedenis ten tonele gevoerd worden.
Het werk van Philip Glass voor het theater bevat veel composities voor de groep Mabou Mines, die hij heeft gesticht in 1970.

In de jaren '80 werd Glass onverwacht populair door zijn filmuziek voor "Koyaanisqatsi" en zijn occasionele samenwerking met Laurie Anderson.
Sinds de negentiger jaren schrijft Glass meer en meer conventionele klassieke muziek voor strijkkwartet en symfonie-orkest.
Populaire werken van tegenwoordig zijn de filmmuziek uit "The Truman Show" (1998) en "The Hours " (2002).

Ik zag hem vorig jaar nog optreden en -geloof me- het is een ongelooflijk sterke persoonlijkheid met een verbijsterend coole performance en  tranceverwekkende muziek die je de adem afsnijdt. Terwijl hij eigenlijk niet meer doet dan achteloos een stukje piano spelen. En na ieder nummer staat hij recht van zijn pianokruk, loopt naar een microfoon en legt uit wat het volgende nummer is. Daarna gaat hij weer zitten en speelt weer even achteloos verder. En dit gaat twee uur lang door. Mindboggling.

The Kronos Quartet has stolen my heart

Het Kronos Quartet (Kronoskwartet) is een strijkkwartet dat is opgericht door de Amerikaanse violist David Harrington in Seattle in 1973.

Sinds 1978 heeft het kwartet zijn thuisbasis in San Francisco. Het kwartet heeft verschillende samenstellingen gehad. De langstlopende samenstelling (1978–1999) was met Harrington en  John Sherba op viool, Hank Dutt op altviool en Joan Jeanrenaud op cello. Jennifer Culp kwam voor Jeanrenaud in de plaats vanaf 1999, tot 2005, toen zij op haar beurt werd opgevolgd door Jeffrey Zeigler.
Het Kronoskwartet staat bekend om zijn - voor de klassieke muziek - tamelijk exuberante uitvoeringspraktijk, met lichteffecten en speciaal ontworpen kostuums. Muzikaal gezien richt het zich op hedendaagse muziek; veel beroemde componisten schreven nieuw werk in opdracht van het Kronoskwartet. Naar schatting zijn inmiddels bijna 600 werken speciaal voor het kwartet geschreven, onder andere door Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Alfred Schnittke en John Coolidge Adams.

Een ander specialisme betreft de fusion-muziek; het Kronoskwartet speelde ook veel werk uit niet-westerse tradities, zoals van de componist Franghiz Ali-Zadeh uit Azerbeidzjan en Osvaldo Golijov uit Argentinië. Daarnaast speelde het kwartet Mexicaanse volksmuziek, experimentele muziek, oude muziek, filmmuziek, jazz en tango. Het kwartet nam zelfs bewerkingen op van Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", Sigur Rós's "Flugufrelsarinn" en Raymond Scott's "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals".
Samen met Asha Bhosle (een van de grootste artiesten in de wereld, met haar 1100 films en 12.000 songs) nam het Kronoskwartet een selectie op uit de bekendste Bollywood-film-songs.
