People, hold on to: Coldcut

Coldcut is een Britse DJ-duo, bestaande uit Matt Black en Jonathan Moore. Black en Moore begonnen met hun samenwerking halverwege de jaren '80 bij het piraten radiostation KissFM. Korte tijd later brachten ze een eerste single uit. Deze single wordt gezien als het begin van de Britse dance-scene.

In 1987 maakten ze een remix van "Paid in Full" van Erik B and Rakim. Deze plaat werd een internationale tophit.
In 1988 scoorde Coldcut een eerste hit onder hun eigen naam, Doctor in the House. De zang op de platen van de Londense knip- en plakgoochelaars werd verzorgd door onder meer Lisa Stansfield en Yazz. Later ging Coldcut zich vooral bezighouden met het produceren van nummers voor anderen en met het verzorgen van multimedia-optredens waarbij naast geluid ook beeld een belangrijke rol speelde.

Twintig jaar na de release van de single 'Say Kids What Time Is It’ waarmee Coldcut het begin van het Britse elektronica tijdperk inluidde, staan deze dansvloerhooligans er nog steeds. Na het remix-album ‘Journeys by DJ’ kwamen ze met de show ‘Journeys by VJ’: de ultieme audiovisuele mix.

So Natural, All Woman: Lisa Stansfield

Lisa Stansfield (11 april 1966, Manchester) is een Brits zangeres, die eind jaren '80 en begin jaren '90 enkele grote hits scoorde.
Op 14-jarige leeftijd won ze een talentenjacht georganiseerd door een plaatselijke krant, waarna ze haar televisiedebuut kon maken. In 1983 vormde ze samen met twee vriendinnen van school de groep Blue Zone. Hun eerste single On Fire was aanvankelijk populair, maar werd uit de handel genomen na een grote brand op het Londense Metro station King's Cross.

In 1989 kwam de grote doorbraak, toen ze de vocalen mocht doen voor Stop this crazy thing en People Hold On van Coldcut . Dit nummer werd een grote hit, waarna Stansfield een solo-carriere begon.
Haar eerste single All Around The World werd een nummer 1 hit begin 1990. Later volgden nog hits zoals Change, So Natural, All Woman en These are the Days of Our Lives met George Michael (een hoogtepunt uit het Queen-tribute live-concert).
In 1991 en 1992 won ze een Grammy award voor beste vrouwelijke artiest.

De betere albums zijn Real love en So Natural: zwoele laatavond-jazz/soul met de neiging soms iets te zoet te worden...
