Don't shoot him, he's only the piano player: Elton John

Reginald Kenneth Dwight (Pinner, Middlesex, 25 maart 1947) is een Engelse popzanger en pianist. Zijn pseudoniem Elton John is geen artiestennaam, maar werd in de jaren zestig officieel geregistreerd als naam. Het is een combinatie van de namen Elton Dean en Long John Baldry, twee collega's uit zijn tijd bij de band Bluesology.

Omdat hij zich na verloop van tijd bij deze band te veel beperkt voelde in zijn muzikale mogelijkheden, ging hij op zoek naar andere mogelijkheden. Via een advertentie kwam hij in contact met Bernie Taupin, wiens teksten hij op muziek ging zetten.
In 1970 brak hij door met het nummer Your Song. Zijn eerste periode is voor mij nog altijd zijn sterkste, met hits als Daniel, Rocket Man, Bennie and the Jets, The Bitch is back, en Don't go breaking my heart.
Na Nikita ging alles steil naar beneden... Voor de film The Lion King componeerde en zong hij de titelsong Can You Feel the Love Tonight. Op de begrafenis van Prinses Diana zong Elton het nummer Candle in the Wind, dat wereldwijd een grote hit werd.
Ruim twee jaar geleden -ten tijde van de CD The Captain & the Kid- zag ik 'm live maar een echt hoge vlucht nam het concert nooit. Dat is ook moeilijk als je co-piloot Routine heet en je andere piloot een automatische piloot is.
Gek is, dat ik zijn soundtrack van de animatiefilm Eldorado ondergewaardeerd vind, en die van The Lion King overroepen.

Maar Elton John wordt algemeen gezien als een van de grootste zangtalenten ooit, zijn nummers worden veel vertolkt door andere artiesten en zijn vaak te horen op radiostations...
