Les Claypool of foes and woes

Leslie Edward "Les" Claypool (Richmond (Californië), 29 september) is een bassist en vocalist, onder andere bekend uit de band Primus, die ook de intro van South Park heeft gemaakt, niet wetende dat dit ooit een van de grootste tekenfilmseries zou worden. Tegenwoordig heeft Les Claypool ook een aantal solo albums.

Claypool leerde een slap- techniek te ontwikkelen door naar muzikanten als Stanley Clarke en Larry Graham te luisteren. Hij kocht ook zijn eerste Carl Thompson bas, zijn herkenbare 4 snarige bas. (Hij heeft er nu 7, waaronder een fretloze 6 snarige bas)
In 1986, na de dood van Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton deed Claypool auditie bij Metallica. Hij speelde "Master of Puppets". James Hetfield zei dat Claypool niet geschikt was omdat hij "te goed" was. (Claypool zat op dezelde middelbare school als Kirk Hammett.)

De tweede solo-CD ‘Of Fungi And Foe’ is een zompige verzameling nummers van filmscores en spelletjes. Claypool schreef de muziek bij de scènes van het video-oorlogsspel ‘Mushroom Men’, het werd op dit nieuwe album de door marcheerritmes en xylofoons voortgedreven opener. Verder vind je hier muziek uit de film ‘Pig Hunt’ waarin Claypool acteerde en de muziek schreef. "Amantis" is weird, maar door het ijzersterke ritme volstrekt samenhangend. ‘Bite Out Of Life’ is een jam met Eugene Hutz van Gogol Bordello en is dus een energiek nummer waarbij Hutz de van hem bekende zigeunerpunkmuziek akoestisch uitvoert.
En af en toe hoor je Frank Zappa en/of Tom Waits voorbij wandelen...
