The unofficial Afrobeat Boxset

Deze omvangrijke zevendelige CD-set met intense, donkere, rauwe, virtuose en levenslustige Afrikaanse muziek is een onofficiele boxset, die samengesteld werd voor Pitchwork Media. Je leest er alles over hier.

Joe Tangari heeft een indrukwekkende lijst met nummers samengesteld en heeft de hele handel ZELF geuploaded naar BitTorrent-sites.
De muziek komt vooral uit de jaren '70 en '80, maar het oudste nummer stamt uit 1965: "Highlife Time" van Koola Lobitos (uit Nigeria). De meest recente track komt uit de Republiek Congo: Konono No. 1, met "Paradiso" (2005).
De meest uiteenlopende landen zijn vertegenwoordigd: Ghana, Gambia, Angola en Senegal; maar ook Kameroen, Benin en Mali... En grote namen worden niet geschuwd: Fela Kuti, Salif Keita, King Sunny Ade, Manu Dibango en Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Je hoeft niks van afrobeat te weten om te beseffen dat dit een indrukwekkende collectie Afrikaanse muziek is.
