Sofia Coppola (New York City, 14 mei 1971) is een Amerikaanse actrice en regisseur. Ze was in 2004 de eerste Amerikaanse vrouw die een Oscar-nominatie kreeg voor beste regisseur.Uiteindelijk kreeg 'Lost in Translation' (2003) vier Oscarnominaties, voor beste acteur (Bill Murray), beste film, beste regie en beste script.
Toch was er ook grote controverse. Sofia Coppola brengt op nogal weinig subtiele wijze de Japanse consumptiemaatschappij in beeld. Bijna geen enkele Japanner in de film spreekt Engels en het lijkt alsof ze niets anders doen dan computerspelletjes spelen, striptease bars bezoeken, karaoke zingen en ruzie maken. Dit schoot bij veel Japanners in het verkeerde keelgat. Ze vonden de film slecht voor het imago van hun land of zelfs ronduit racistisch.
Sofia Coppola - dochter van Francis Ford Coppola - regisseerde eerder ook 'The Virgin Suicides' (1999), maar ook de anachronistische, eclectistische muzikale comedy 'Marie-Antoinette' (2006), die vergelijkbaar is met 'Moulin Rouge", één van mijn all time favorites...
