Ferry at the Roxy

Roxy Music is een Britse rockgroep die in het begin van de jaren '70 werd gevormd als samenwerkingsproject tussen Bryan Ferry (zang, toetsenbord) en Brian Eno (elektronische muziekspecialist).
De band bestond van 1971 tot 1983 (zonder Eno na 1973). De band viel naast de styling ook op met de prachtige platenhoezen met bekende fotomodellen, zoals Jerry Hall en Amanda Lear.
In 2001 werd Roxy Music herenigd. Dit jaar stonden ze bvb. op LiveAid in Berlijn.

De naam van de groep was gedeeltelijk een hulde aan de namen van oude bioscopen en danszalen, en was gedeeltelijk een woordspeling op het woord rock. Het parallel aan de orde stellen van nostalgische en eigentijdse (of futuristische) thema's was een kenmerkende eigenschap van de band, in het bijzonder in hun vroegste werken. Hun grootste successen haalden ze met de gladdere recentere nummers zoals "Avalon" en de dansversie van "Angel Eyes"..

Roxy Music stond model voor onder andere de New Wave en de New Romantics.

Bryan Ferry werd geboren op 26 september 1945 in Washington in Noordoost-Engeland.
Na zijn middelbare schooltijd ging Ferry kunsten studeren aan de Universiteit van Newcastle upon Tyne, om vervolgens pottenbakcursussen te gaan geven in Londen. Tegelijkertijd probeerde Bryan een carrière in de muziek te vestigen. Met dat doel voor ogen richtte hij in 1971 'Roxy Music' op.
In de tussentijd hield Ferry ook nog, met succes, een solocarrière in stand. Toen Roxy Music in 1983 uit elkaar ging, richtte Ferry zich volledig op zijn solocarrière, waarvoor hij de steun kreeg van het oud-bandlid Paul Thompson. Hij zong nummers van Roxy Music, klassiekers uit de jaren '30 van de twintigste eeuw en een aantal nieuwe nummers.

Behalve muzikaal succes, viel Bryan Ferry ook erg goed in de smaak bij vrouwen. Zo had hij onder anderen een relatie met (Hoe toevallig!) de modellen Amanda Lear en Jerry Hall, en met de activiste Lucy Helmore, van wie hij vier zonen kreeg.

In 2001 werd er een Roxy Music-reünie georganiseerd met Ferry, Thompson, Phil Manzanera en Andy Mackay. Samen gingen zij toeren en traden zij in juni 2005 op in Berlijn bij Live 8, maar desondanks bleef Ferry ook solo muziek maken.
In 2004 maakte hij bijvoorbeeld de themasong voor de film The Porter, waarin hijzelf ook een rol had...
