O'happy O'day
Ze begon haar carrière in 1934 bij een zanggezelschap dat toerde door het middenwesten van de Verenigde Staten. Eind jaren 30 werd ze jazz-zangeres in de jazz club Off-Beat. In 1941 sloot ze zich aan bij Krupa's Band. Daar werd ook trompettist Roy Eldrigde bijgehaald. Anita en Roy hadden een geweldige chemie op het podium. Dat resulteerde uiteindelijk in de single "Let Me Off Uptown", wat een enorme hit werd. Na haar samenwerking met Krupa's Band, sloot Anita zich aan bij Stan Kenton's Band.
In 1936 besloot ze professioneel zangeres te worden. Ze vond drummer John Poole en daar bleef ze de daarop volgende 32 jaar mee samenwerken. Het album "Anita" bracht ze uit, ze speelde met grote sterren als Louis Armstrong en Dinah Washington en verscheen in de documentaire "Jazz on a Summersday", wat zorgde voor haar internationale doorbraak. In de jaren 60 ging Anita door met touren. Daarnaast was ze ernstig verslaafd aan de heroine, wat haar in 1969 bijna haar leven kostte. Ze kickte af, ging door met werken en bracht in 1981 haar biografie uit: "High Times, Hard Times".
Ze O'Day overleed in 2006.
