Niet te missen: Missy Elliot

Melissa Arnette ("Missy") Elliot (1 juli 1971, Portsmouth, Virginia) is een Afro-Amerikaanse zangeres, rapper, songwriter en producer.
Missy Elliott begon haar muzikale carriere in de meidengroep Sista. Later ging de rapper solo werken en begon ze ook muziek te produceren.

Haar eerste album getiteld 'Supa Dupa Fly' (1997) werd uitgebracht op haar eigen label Gold Mind Inc. Het tweede album 'Da Real World' (1999) toonde niet alleen haar eigen capaciteiten, maar ze had ook de hulp ingeroepen van o.a. Eminem, Aaliyah en Destiny's Child. Het was ongetwijfeld één van de beste RnB-CDs uit die tijd en verdiende dan ook succes. Helaas bleven de verkoopscijfers achter.

Maar in 2001 lukt het Missy 'Misdemeanor' dan toch. De single 'Get Ur Freak On' raakt in de top 10 van de hitlijsten en ook het bijhorende album 'Miss E...So Addictive' werd een schot in de roos. Missy werkte voor dit album opnieuw samen met Tim 'Timbaland' Mosley en Missy Elliott kreeg eindelijk het verdiende succes. Na het minder populaire 'One Minute Man' trachtte Missy met een derde single uit dat album opnieuw te scoren. '4 My People' werd een voltreffer.
In 2002 bracht Missy de CD 'Under Construction' uit. Die bevat o.a. 'Work It', dat opnieuw een hit werd. Ook de opvolger 'Gossip Folks', een samenwerking met Ludacris, werd een hit.

Robert de Niro gaat een film produceren die gebaseerd is op haar leven, en doet dat in samenwerking met Mona Scott, Missy's manager. Missy zal met auteur Dianne Huston zelf een bijdrage leveren aan het script.
Missy is de eerste grote vrouwelijke hiphop-artiest. Een carierre-overzichtje:
