Smoove, the man with two watches

De Engelse producer Smoove (Newcastle, UK) debuteerde in 2005 met 'Dead Men's Shirts', een cd vol jazzy en funky breakbeat. De vocale bijdragen moest hij indertijd nog via zijn sampler toevoegen. Smoove is tevens producer, internationale DJ, live-performer, remixer en platenbaas.

Smoove's sound heeft op zijn eigen albums hetzelfde retrogevoel als de platen die hij in zijn dj-set draait: soul, latin, funk, jazz, northern soul en hiphop. Van mijn part mag je 't acid jazz noemen, of breakbeat, (af en toe wordt zelfs de term "future jazz" gelanceerd) maar zeker is dat Smoove een gesofisticeerd soort rauwheid brengt die enerzijds schatplichtig is aan neo-soul en anderzijds aan een steeds groter wordende groep retro-soulartiesten (tot nader order nog steeds onder aanvoering van Amy Winehouse)... En het lonkt schaamteloos naar Kraak & Smaak, of Arling & Cameron, of Soul Ballet...
