Shabba ranks not too high

De enige hit van Shabba Ranks (Rexton Rawlston Fernando Gordon, 17 januari 1966, Sturgetown, Jamaica) was ‘Mr. Loverman’ (nr.21 in 1992). En dat is ook meteen zijn bijnaam geworden.

In 1985 noemde hij zich Co-pilot en nam zijn eerste single ‘Heat under sufferer’s feet’ op. Met zijn onmiskenbare baritonstem wordt hij als Shabba Ranks bekend met hitjes als 'Roots And Culture', 'Live Blanket' en 'Wicked Inna Bed'.
Rond de decenniumwisseling groeit het succes van Shabba door de albums 'Rappin' With The Ladies' (1998) en 'Golden Touch' (1991) en een wereldtournee. Van die eerste CD is ook de wereldhit 'Mr. Loverman' afkomstig. Shabba's grootste commerciële succes mondt uit in de compilatie 'Shabba And Friends' (1999).

Shabba Ranks is één van de beroemdste toasters. Hij kreeg echter nooit het succes dat zijn volgers Shaggy en Sean Paul wel ten deel viel.
