Monkey business, or just another primate? Bonobo

Bonobo is de artiestennaam van Simon Green, een Britse triphop-producer (niet te verwarren met een gelijknamige Nederlandse producer). Bonobo staat voor filmische, atmosferische downtempo met een vleugje jazz.

Hij debuteerde op het hoogtepunt van de loungegolf, met zijn debuutalbum Animal Logic. Dat was de best denkbare combinatie van romantische soundtrackmuziek á la Air en groovende breakbeats van het type Organic Audio. Op zijn eigen label, Tru Thoughts, verscheen ook nog One Offs, een collectie remixen en B-kanten van single releases
In 2000 trekt hij met zijn debuut-CD «Animal Magic« de aandacht van o.m. XL Recordings en Mute Records., maar uiteindelijk besluit hij bij het label Ninja Tune verder te produceren. Green meandert op dat album rustig door zijn eigen fantasieën, met soms een redelijk hoog Disney-gehalte (watervalletjes, zonnestraaltje, bloemetjes, vlindertjes... dié sfeer).
De geluidstapijten zijn duidelijk gebaseerd op filmmuziek, begeleid met trip-hop-achtige beats. Er zijn Oosterse invloeden door het album gevlochten en zij voegen een extra dimensie toe aan het algemene geluid. Soms vrijblijvend, soms meer beklijvend... Hoogtepunten zijn: Flutter, Change Down, Wayward Bob, Pick Up en Nothing Owed.
Dit is absoluut chillout op zijn best, en de CD is een organisch klinkend meesterwerkje... Toch wel.
