Catching Up with Depeche Mode

De Britse new wave/synthpopformatie Depeche Mode werd in 1980 opgericht in Basildon, Engeland. De band brak in 1981 door met het album Speak and Spell. Onder leiding van computer-whizz kid Vince Clark hadden ze in hun thuisland en Duitsland de ene hit na de andere, maar daar leek een einde aan te komen toen Clark in 1982 de band verliet om Yazoo op te richten. Gelukkig overleefde de band die tegenslag en gingen de overgebleven bandleden gewoon door.

Gek genoeg heeft Depeche Mode in ons land nooit veel potten kunnen breken. In 1985 was er wel de hit 'Just Can't Get Enough' (een live-versie van een geflopte single uit 1981), en in mindere mate scoorden ook People are People, Just Can't Get Enough en Enjoy the Silence, maar daar is het wel zo'n beetje bij gebleven. Beter vergaat het ze dan o.a. in Engeland of Amerika - daar verkoopt de band ook nu nog moeiteloos complete arena's uit.
En stug blijven ze CDs uitbrengen...
