Superguy Curtis Mayfield

Curtis Mayfield (3-6-1942, Chicago, Illinois - 26-12-1999, Roswell, Georgia) heeft een hoofdrol gespeeld in de soul-muziek van de afgelopen 40 jaar en heeft ontelbare musici beïnvloed.

Tussen 1961 en 1971, schreef hij een reeks van invloedrijke singles voor zijn band, inclusief Gypsy Woman (1961), It's All Right (1963), People Get Ready (1965), We're A Winner (1968) en Choice Of Colours (1969).
Curtis schreef liefdesliedjes, maar ook protestliederen over sociale en politieke gelijkheid. Zijn voortdurende ondersteuning aan andere artiesten als componist, producent of sessiegitarist, steeg uit boven zijn reputatie van zanger.
In 1970 begon hij zijn solocarrière met (Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below We're All Going To Go, een protestlied. Het jaar daarop schreef Mayfield zijn grootste succes, Move On Up.
De erkenning ging door met Freddie's Dead en het thema van Superfly (1972), een 'blaxploitation'- film. Zowel de singles als het album behaalden goud, wat hem inspireerde tot meer uitstapjes in de film.
In 1981 gaat hij naar het Boardwalk-label, waarvoor hij Honesty opnam, zijn sterkste album sinds de vroege zeventiger jaren.

In 1990 werd hij verlamd vanaf de nek, doordat een deel van zijn equipment bovenop hem viel tijdens een concert. De effecten hiervan waren zowel persoonlijk als professioneel dramatisch, maar niet verwoestend voor zijn muzikale carrière.
In 1993 gaf Warner Brothers A Tribute To Curtis Mayfield uit, en een jaar later gaf Charly Records het grootste deel van Mayfield's 70 albums op CD uit evenals verschillende compilaties. In 1996 verzamelde Rhino Records de beste verzameling in een 3-CD box set.
Aan het einde van 1996 werd er een nieuw album uitgegeven (New World Order), wat uitmuntende kritieken kreeg. Tijdens de opnamen moest Mayfield op zijn buik liggen, ondersteund door een harnas, om zodoende meer kracht aan zijn stem te geven.

Op tweede kerstdag 1999 stierf Curtis in zijn slaap in het North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell, Georgia, in de V.S
