Geetali Norah Jones Shankar
Norah Jones, geboren als Geetali Norah Jones Shankar (30 maart 1979 in New York) is een Amerikaanse jazz-zangeres. Haar vader was de beroemde Ravi Shankar.Op haar zestiende gaf ze haar eerste optreden in een plaatselijk koffie-shop. Daar zong ze I'll be seeing you. Terwijl ze nog op school zat, won ze de Down Beat Student Music Awards voor Best Jazz Vocalist en Best Original Composition in 1996, en behaalde een tweede SMA voor Best Jazz Vocalist in 1997.
In 1999 trok ze naar New York waar ze regelmatig optrad met de funk-fusion-groep Wax Poetic. Tussen de diensterbaantjes door ging ze om met de plaatselijk songwriters. Uiteindelijk werd er een groep gevormd met songwriter Jess Harris, Lee Alexander als bassist en Dan Rieser als drummer. Norah zong en speelde piano.
In oktober 2000 nam de groep een paar demo's op voor Blue Note Records. Het resultaat kwam uit als de EP 'First sessions'. In 2001 tekende Norah voor een contract bij Blue Note Records.
Ze begon met het opnemen van haar album Come away with me in mei 2001. Het album kwam in februari 2002 uit. Meteen was Norah Jones de grote slokop op de Grammy-uitreiking in 2003. Ze won elke categorie waarin ze genomineerd was en ging met liefst acht Grammy's aan de haal.
In februari 2004 kwam haar tweede studio-album "Feels like home" uit.
En met het derde reguliere album 'Not too late' (feb. 2007) zet ze haar zegetocht gewoon verder. Niet dat dat album iets toevoegt maar het is in de voorverkoop al een megaseller...
